Introduction
The need for clean water purification has become an essential part of our daily lives, albeit from a
healthier lifestyle or economical point of view. With the electrical power supply not guaranteed, we can
no longer depend a continued and clean water supply from our local Municipalities.
Proposal
Taking into consideration that there are a few options available to purify water available in the market
today, it is essential that through any filtration or recycling process we ensure that the drinking water is
clean, and not tainted with all kinds of harmful bacteria.
The senior staff at African Water Management, have over the past 34 years looked at the daily loss of
grey water, and the wastage of water through the draining of Fire Sprinkler Installations etc. The
corrosion and pollutants in the water from these installations has made it impossible to reuse it.
Through skills and knowledge gained in piped water systems over the years, we have looked at a
number of mechanisms that can be placed inline on an existing or new installation to filter and recycle
contaminated water.
Considering that contaminated water, waste water, and “acid water” from mines can be recycled and
reused, we must ensure that the process whereby the water is filtered to remove all the harmful
pathogens, complies with acceptable standards.
The system that we propose using in our water purification installation has been researched and
developed in South Africa over the past 46 years.
Savings to the client is realized with the reintroduction of the recycled wastewater back into the
existing water system, irrigation or back into the sprinkler installation. Depending on the client’s choice
of filtration system, the clean reprocessed water can be used as drinking water as well.
Installation
The system is so designed to collect, grey, waste and rainwater into an above ground or underground
tank suitably placed to suit the site conditions. The water in the tanks undergoes a purification process
and is treated with Chlorine, Flocculent and Ozone. The treated water is pumped through a series of
filters purposely designed to suit the client’s needs. Thereafter the water is discharged and stored into a
holding tank.
From the holding tank the treated / purified water can be utilized however the client desires. The water
can be pumped back into the main incoming municipal supply after the water meter, to be reused in the
domestic water system. The water can furthermore be used on the irrigation system or re pumped back
into the sprinkler / fire installation.
Advantages
The advantages of the filtration system, is the water saving, assurance of a managed water supply
during unplanned water shutdowns, as well as being environmentally friendly and earning Green
Building points.
Ultimately the savings derived from recycling water will reflect on the client’s budget.
