and fascinating rock pools home to crabs, limpets and barnacles.
Famous for the TV show Gavin and Stacey, it offers a beautiful spot
to enjoy an ice-cream, build sandcastles and go for a paddle. Bucket
and spade anyone? Wander along the limestone headland for fantastic
views of the wider Severn Estuary. It makes up part of the Wales Coast
Path - keen to explore more? Visit the Glamorgan Heritage Coast that
stretches from Aberthaw to Porthcawl. Cold Knap beach and Jackson
Bay are also not to miss if you are in the area.
Bae Whitmore
Mae Bae Whitmore yn Ynys y Barri yn ddelfrydol am ddiwrnod allan

Flat Holm Island
Situated in the middle of the Estuary, Flat Holm provides stunning
views and a unique experience to really explore the Severn in
a different way. Its remoteness and isolation gives a sense of
excitement. Half a mile wide, the island is home to fantastic wildlife
including seabird colonies - don’t forget to bring your binoculars.
Visit the Isolation Hospital, used to protect the mainland from a
cholera epidemic in 1883. Look out for the historical lighthouse, fog
horn station and WW2 fortifications. Feeling adventurous? You can
stay overnight on the Island. Day trips (using high speed RIBs) also
depart from Cardiff Bay several times a month.
Ynys Echni
Mae Ynys Echni, sy’n gorwedd yng nghanol yr Aber, yn cynnig
golygfeydd gogoneddus a phrofiad unigryw sy’n rhoi’r cyfle i rywun
ddarganfod Afon Hafren mewn ffordd wahanol. Mae ei natur
anghysbell yn ennyn cyffro. Mae’r ynys, lai na hanner milltir ar ei
hyd, yn gartref i fywyd gwyllt bendigedig, fel nythfeydd adar môr,
felly cofiwch ddod â’ch ysbienddrych. Cofiwch ymweld â’r Ysbyty
Arwahanu, a ddefnyddiwyd i ddiogelu’r tir mawr rhag epidemig colera
ym 1883. Cadwch lygad allan am y goleudy hanesyddol, gorsaf y corn
niwl ac amddiffynfeydd o’r Ail Ryfel Byd. Gallwch aros dros nos ar yr
Ynys, ond mae teithiau dydd (ar gychod RIB cyflym) yn gadael o Fae
Caerdydd sawl gwaith y mis.

Penarth to Lavernock Point
If you fancy a long coastal walk (~2.5 hours) with views across to the
islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm (even the Somerset coast on a clear
day), then this stretch is for you. Park at Penarth or Lavernock Point
(depending on where you want to start from) and make your way along
the road before joining up with the Wales Coast Path. Upon reaching
Lavernock Point Nature Reserve, spot a variety of butterflies, moths
and birds like sparrowhawks and green woodpeckers. Lavernock Point
is perfect for geology lovers who want to explore the cliffs (a mixture of
Jurassic and Triassic rocks) for evidence of the history of the Severn
Estuary, our very own Jurassic Park. (Facilities are at Penarth).
Penarth i Drwyn Larnog
Am dreulio ychydig oriau yn cerdded (tua 2.5 awr) i gael golygfeydd o
Ynys Echni ac Ynys Rhonech (ac arfordir Gwlad yr Haf ar ddiwrnodau

(yn dibynnu ar le byddwch yn dechrau eich taith) a cherddwch ar
hyd y ffordd cyn ymuno â Llwybr Arfordir Cymru. Pan gyrhaeddwch
Warchodfa Natur Trwyn Larnog, gallwch geisio dod o hyd i amrywiaeth

A vibrant hub of activity along the estuary. Mermaid Quay is home to
shops, bars, the Senedd and Pier Head Building (National Assembly

Norwegian seafarers during the industrial revolution), and Cardiff
Bay Wetland Reserve. Easily accessible with walkways, the reserve
attracts a variety of wildlife.
To enjoy views across the city, walk along the Barrage from the
Church. The Barrage has impressive locks, a fish pass and an
embankment play area. Take time to stop and watch the world
(and the boats) go by.

been active since the 1920s. Join up with the Wales Coast Path (turn
right out of car park entrance) for half a mile to explore the ruins
of Sudbrook Chapel, dating back to the 12th century and Sudbrook

Lydney Harbour
Breathtaking estuary views at Lydney Harbour are a welcome
surprise for first time visitors. The historic dock dates back to the
early 19th Century, although Lydney’s use as a water gateway goes
back even further. Remnants of its industrial past are still visible
today. Once you’ve taken in the natural splendour of the estuary
from the short walk around the harbour, you can visit Lydney and
the many attractions of the Forest of Dean. A trip to the historic
Gloucester Docks is also a must-do. Visit our website for more
information.
Harbwr Lydney
Mae’r golygfeydd ysblennydd o’r aber yn siŵr o’ch syfrdanu os ydych
yn ymweld â Harbwr Lydney am y tro cyntaf. Mae’r doc hanesyddol
yn dyddio’n ôl i ddechrau’r 19eg ganrif, ond mae Lydney wedi cael
ei defnyddio fel porth dŵr ers oes pys. Mae olion o’i gorffennol
diwydiannol i’w gweld o hyd. Ar ôl mwynhau rhyfeddodau naturiol
yr aber o’r llwybrau byrion o amgylch yr harbwr, ewch i ymweld
â Lydney ei hun ac atyniadau amrywiol Fforest y Ddena. Cofiwch

Newnham-on-Severn
 the Severn Bore
Stroll along the banks of the river at Newnham-on-Severn and enjoy
the tranquil setting. Using the telescope, watch a variety of birds
feeding on the mudflats from afar. It’s also a popular spot to view the
famous Severn Bore – one of Britain’s greatest natural phenomena.
The Severn Bore is a large surge wave created by the rising tide that
travels upstream, at speeds of up to 13mph. You can often see surfers
and kayakers catching the bore, some travelling great distances.
The height of the bore increases upstream - travelling further towards
Minsterworth is worthwhile. Visit our website for more information
and links to the bore timetable.
Newnham-on-Severn ac Eger Hafren
Ewch am dro ar hyd glannau’r afon yn Newnham-on-Severn i fwynhau
eiliad o heddwch. Defnyddiwch y telesgop i wylio amrywiaeth o adar
yn bwydo ar y traethellau. Mae hefyd yn fan poblogaidd i wylio’r enwog
Eger Hafren – un o ryfeddodau naturiol enwocaf Prydain. Mae’r eger yn
don ymchwydd fawr sy’n cael ei chreu gan daith y llanw i fyny’r afon
hyd at 13 milltir yr awr. Yn aml fe welwch syrffwyr a chaiacwyr yn dal
yr eger, gyda rhai’n teithio pellteroedd maith! Mae’r eger yn tyfu wrth
iddo deithio i fyny’r afon, felly teithiwch tua i’w weld ar ei orau. Ewch

Purton Hulks
Time to discover the history and stories of the sunken ships at
Purton Hulks - the largest “ships’ graveyard” in the UK. In 1909, a
small fleet of timber lighters were beached here to strengthen
the canal bank, protecting it from eroding away by the tide. Now
it is home to over 80 boats buried here - the largest collection of
maritime artefacts on the foreshore of Britain. Friends of Purton
provide guided tours – see our website for more information.
Hylciau Purton
Camwch yn ôl drwy amser a dysgu am hanes yr holl longau sydd
wedi’u tirio yn Hylciau Purton – “mynwent longau” fwyaf y DU.
Ym 1909, tiriwyd fflyd fechan o gychod dadlwytho pren yma i
atgyfnerthu glan y gamlas a’i diogelu rhag erydiad y llanw. Mae nawr
yn gartref i fwy nag 80 o gychod – y casgliad mwyaf o arteffactau
morol ym Mhrydain. Mae Cyfeillion Purton yn cynnig teithiau tywys –

Sharpness
Take in the beautiful scenery from a different vantage point – the
upper estuary. Sharpness picnic area is an ideal location for a
relaxed lunch on a sunny day. Spend some time watching boats
arriving and departing through the locks, only accessible to most
craft at high tide. Take a stroll along the coast; the views of the two
Severn Bridges in the distance are spectacular at sunset – a great
opportunity to test those photography skills.
Sharpness
Dewch i fwynhau’r prydferthwch o ongl wahanol yn yr aber uchaf.
Ardal picnic Sharpness yw’r lle delfrydol i fwynhau tamaid i’w fwyta
ar hirddydd haf. Treuliwch ysbaid yn gwylio’r cychod yn mynd a
dod drwy’r lociau, sydd ond ar agor i’r rhan fwyaf o longau gyda’r
penllanw. Ewch am dro ar hyd yr arfordir; mae’r golygfeydd o’r ddwy

Aust Cliff
The striking red, black and white layers of Aust Cliff are perhaps
the most iconic natural feature of the South Gloucestershire
landscape. It tells the story of the drowning of an ancient hot, arid
desert between 221 and 195 million years ago. Along the bottom of
the cliff, look for white rock (gypsum) in thin layers – formed when
the ancient desert lakes dried out. Bony remains of sea reptiles
like ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, along with sharks, shells and sea
urchins can be found on the beach below. The Aust Goddess, a small
bronze statuette, was recovered from the cliff foot 100 years ago,
thought to date back to the late Iron Age or Roman times.
Clogwyn Aust
Efallai taw Clogwyn Aust, â’i haenau coch, du a gwyn trawiadol,
yw nodwedd naturiol fwyaf eiconig tirwedd De Swydd Gaerloyw.
Dyma leoliad stori ddramatig am foddi anialdir poeth, cras, hynafol
rhwng 221 a 195 miliwn o flynyddoedd yn ôl. Ar hyd gwaelod y
clogwyn, cadwch lygad allan am haenau tenau o graig wen (gypswm)
– a ffurfiwyd pan sychodd llynnoedd hynafol yr anialwch. Mae
gweddillion esgyrnol ymlusgiaid morol fel yr ichthyosor a’r plesiosor
yn yr haenau uchaf ynghyd â siarcod, cregyn a môr-ddraenogod ar y
traeth islaw. Darganfuwyd Duwies Aust, delw efydd fechan, ar waelod
y clogwyn ganrif yn ôl fwy na thebyg o ddiwedd Oes yr Haearn neu
Oes y Rhufeiniaid.

Clevedon
A beautiful Victorian historic seaside town, Clevedon is a great
spot to visit all year round. Popular for its promenade, pebbled
beaches, marine lake and Victorian bandstand, and the many
cafes and restaurants to enjoy the view. Opened in 1869 to receive
paddle steamers from Devon and Wales, Clevedon Pier's exceptional
architectural quality and beautiful design led to its designation as the
UK's only functioning Grade 1 Listed Pier. Pop in to the small museum
for a range of hands-on exhibits for all ages about Clevedon, the Pier
and the estuary. The Porthole Room allows you to see the estuary
from a different perspective, with views across the estuary from
underneath the Pier.
Clevedon
Yn dref glan môr hanesyddol Fictoraidd, mae Clevedon lle gwych
i ymweld ag ef gydol y flwyddyn, yn boblogaidd am ei phromenâd,
traethau cerigos, llyn morol a llwyfan bandiau Fictoraidd, ynghyd â
chaffis a bwytai amrywiol sy’n cynnig golygfeydd ysblennydd. Dynodwyd

“tuffs” (solidified volcanic ash) and pillow lavas (formed as molten
lava cooled rapidly as it flowed into the sea) on the beach - proof of
volcanic eruptions over 300 million years ago. Tranquil and wild, if you
look out from the edge of the Point you may be lucky enough to spot
a seal or harbour porpoise. Surrounding coastal fields also provide
important resting and refuelling spots for migratory birds on passage.
Sand Point a Middle Hope
Mae pentir Sand Point, un o ardaloedd prydferthaf arfordir Gogledd
Gwlad yr Haf (a reolir gan Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol), yn ymestyn
o draeth Middle Hope i’r aber. Mae’n fan poblogaidd i bobl sy’n hoff
o’u hanes – mae daearegwyr wedi bod yn ymweld â’r ardal ers 200
mlynedd. Ceisiwch ddod o hyd i’r “conau twff” (lludw folcanig wedi
soledu) a’r clustogau lafa (a ffurfiwyd wrth i lafa tawdd oeri’n gyflym
wrth lifo i’r môr) ar y traeth – tystiolaeth o ffrwydradau folcanig dros
300 miliwn o flynyddoedd yn ôl. Yn heddychlon a garw, gallech weld
morlo neu lamhidydd yr harbwr o’r ymylon. Mae’r caeau arfordirol
cyfagos yn hafan bwysig i lawer o adar mudol sy’n gorffwys a
bwydo yma.

Brean Down
Stroll along historic Brean Down, one of Somerset’s most dramatic
landmarks. This 300 million year-old Carboniferous limestone deposit
marks the end of the great chain of Mendip Hills before it disappears
into the Bristol Channel. The tip of Brean Down marks the location of
the historic Brean Fort, built in 1870 to protect the Somerset coastline
from French invasion. Walk back along the northern side’s military
road - spot a large white arrow painted on the ground. In WW2, this
indicated to passing bombers the direction of a practice range.
Continue and you will find yourself surrounded by the remnants of six
brick built Lewis Gun positions used in target practice in Weston Bay.
Twyni Brean
Dewch am dro ar hyd dwyni hanesyddol Brean, un o dirnodau mwyaf
trawiadol Gwlad yr Haf. Mae’r gaenen galchfaen garbonifferaidd hon,
sy’n 300 miliwn oed, yn cynrychioli diwedd cadwyn fawr Bryniau
Mendip, cyn diflannu o dan donnau Môr Hafren. Copa’r twyni yw lleoliad
Caer Brean, a adeiladwyd ym 1870 i warchod arfordir Gwlad yr Haf
rhag y Ffrancwyr. Cerddwch yn ôl ar hyd ffordd filwrol y gogledd ac fe
welwch saeth fawr wen wedi’i phaentio ar y llawr. Yn yr Ail Ryfel Byd,
dangosai hon y ffordd i’r maes ymarfer cyfagos i awyrennau bomio.
Ewch yn eich blaenau a chyn pen dim byddwch wedi’ch amgylchynu
gan weddillion chwe safle saethu Gynnau Lewis a ddefnyddiwyd i
ymarfer saethu targedau ym Mae Weston.

Berrow Beach
The long, beautiful six-mile stretch of golden sand between
Burnham and Brean is not to be missed when out on the Somerset
coast. The sand dunes support some of the most diverse flora in
Somerset – over 270 species of wildflower have been identified. At
low tide, discover the wreck of the SS Nornen, a Norwegian Barque
which ran aground here in 1897.
Traeth Berrow
Mae chwe milltir o dywod euraid yn estyn rhwng Burnham a Brean
– dyma un o uchafbwyntiau arfordir Gwlad yr Haf. Peidiwch â’i
fethu, da chi. Mae’r twyni tywod yn gartref i’r amrywiaeth fwyaf o
fflora yng Ngwlad yr Haf – dros 270 o rywogaethau o flodau gwyllt.

Burnham-On-Sea
Burnham-on-Sea is a thriving seaside town with an award-winning
sandy beach, ideal for a fish and chips fix and an afternoon building
sandcastles. The Pier is famous for being Britain’s shortest and
the classic promenade is lined with Victorian and Edwardian guest
houses. If the tide permits wander along the beach up to the iconic
“lighthouse on legs”, built in 1832 to guide fishing boats into the
harbour.
