Globally Criticized Aspects of the Chinese Government
Date Essay Name
Introduction
A fast socio-economic alteration in China had been accompanied with a lessening of several
restrictions on basic human rights. However, the communal government of China appears to
retain its authoritarian outlook of a single-party nation. Arbitrary curbs are imposed on
association, expression, religion and assembly in China and the government even prohibits the
formation of independent human rights organizations and labor unions and retains control of the
party on every judicial institutions in the country.
Governmental suppression of civil rights in China: a globally criticized move
The Chinese government censors the internet, press, publications, print and academic research.
One of the most shocking statement that the government released is that human rights abuses are
justifiable in order to sustain social stability. Involuntary rehousing and population relocation is
carried out by the government on an extensive scale (Xu et al. 2011). The concept of social and
civil freedom almost appears to be unknown in China, considering the manner in which ethnic
minority regions in Xinjiang, Tibet and Inner Mongolia are enforced with largely repressive
policies. Religious freedom in China is also very confined and is almost unrecognized by the
government due to which minority religious groups nationwide confronts discrimination. An
indirect religious authority is also exerted by the government, preventing citizens from
exercising their religious freedom and civil rights fully.
Basic literary rates and primary school enrollment statistics are relatively higher in China but the
national educational system is known to discriminate against youth and children with disabilities.
Obstruction of international and domestic scrutiny of its civil rights records is a severely
repressive and unjustifiable approach undertaken by the Chinese government, which may be
deemed as an attempt to shield the inhuman conditions that prevail within the Chinese

communities from world view. The Chinese régime even went to an extent of regarding
international and domestic attempts of scrutinizing the civil rights statistics in the country as an
effort to destabilize the Chinese community. The globally extracted diplomatic overview of
China is critical but confined due to the Chinese government’s restriction on intervention of
global administration in scrutinizing its authoritarian statistics (Kent, 2011).
Simultaneously, citizens appear to be largely prepared to challenge government on volatile
livelihood aspects like forced evictions, land seizures, injustice, environment degradation,
economic inequality, environmental degradation and power abuse by corrupt cadres; a situation
that extensively puts in question the peace that prevails along the outskirts of China. Scholarly
statistics in association with law enforcement records opine that there are around five hundred
protests every single day, which ranges anywhere from a minimal group to thousands of
protesters (Laundry, 2008). Reform-driven media and internet users are opting to push away
censorship limitations aggressively by advocating for the regulation of transparency and legality,
uncovering government wrongdoing and injustice and supporting political reformation
irrespective of the high risks.
Civil society associations have begun to expand their attempts for political reformation, respite
their precarious statistic’s. A resilient but information network of human rights activists
documents and measures human rights records as an unfastened national ‘rights defense’
(weiquan) movement (Holbig, 2008). Detention, arrest, police monitoring, torture and enforced
disappearance are endured by such activists but still they continue with their will and work for
political reformation in their highly oppressive and repressive native country. Human rights
defenders are often praised by global civil rights advocates for their approach but it remains very
difficult for civil rights activists in China to seek global support as the Chinese government
largely restricts intervention of international groups in such matters within the country.
A major crackdown on such activists in the last few years took place in 2013, wherein around
fifty activists were charged with criminal detention in the months between February and October
(King et al. 2013). Detention of civil rights activists for unjustly defined criminal acts such as
‘inciting subversion’, ‘creating disturbances’ for participating and organizing in collective or

public actions. In July 2013, Xu Zhiyong, regarded as a brilliant supervisor of the New Citizens
Program, an unfastened network of human rights defenders and activists was criminally charged
and detailed. The New Citizens Movement gives in continuous efforts in reforming the political
structure of China and even organizes nationwide campaigns, which demand public officials to
expose their questionable assets.
Environmental deterioration in China and government’s failure to take it in concern
Over the past few decades, China has extensively suffered from major environmental pollution
and deterioration. Regulations like the 1979 Environmental Protection Law appear to be fairly
stern but are rarely enforced. Government officials and local communities frequently disregard
the significance of the regulation in lieu of fast economic progress and development (Economy
& Lieberthal, 2007). Extensive air pollution in urban areas of China is a major health issue
nationwide. It was estimated by the World Bank in 2013 that sixteen out of the world’s most
polluted twenty cities are situated in China. The largest CO2 emitter in the world is China, a issue
that the communist government of China does not seem to take seriously. Water problems are
also confronted by Chinese citizens. An estimated 300 million of Chinese village dwellers have
no sufficient access to healthy drinking water and over 40% of rivers in the country have been
severely polluted by agricultural and industrial waste by the last decade. The very crisis and its
ignorance by the government of China is largely compounded by severe water shortages,
specifically in North East China.
Conclusion
China has made steady progress on economic terms but an overall healthy nationalistic
atmosphere in China is highly susceptible to the government’s efforts of ensuring socio-
economic progress in China, which highly comprises the efforts of organizing a healthy
righteous China, where citizens have equal rights to resources and reside peacefully with safe

access to daily necessities. Respite the rapid socio-economic progress China is making, if the
communist government of China fails to take in consideration the dissatisfaction of citizens over
its political formation and ignorance of environmental degradation issues, the very existence of
the country could be threatened.
