One in ten Americans suffer from a hearing loss that affects their ability to understand normal speech.
Although the most common cause is age-related hearing loss, a number of them also suffer from
hearing loss caused by excessive noise exposure. Exposure to excessive noise can damage hearing and it
is important to understand the effects of this kind of noise, mainly as such exposure is avoidable. Loud
noise begins to kill the nerve endings in the inner ear and with prolonged exposure to loud noise, the
nerve endings are destroyed. With a decrease in the nerve endings there is also s decrease in the
hearing and the longer one is exposed to a loud noise, the more damaging it can be. Don't ignore ear
problems as they are most likely not going to improve without proper treatment. The longer you leave
an ear problem, the longer it may take to treat.
Protection is definitely better than cure
Wear hearing protectors, especially if you must work in an excessively noisy environment. You should
also wear them when using power tools, noisy yard equipment, or firearms, or riding a motorcycle or
snowmobile. Hearing protectors come in two forms, earplugs and earmuffs and can cut noise by 15 to
30db when fitted properly. Earmuffs offer some of the greatest comfort in hearing loss protection. OSHA
says earplugs protect better against low frequency noise while earmuffs do well with high frequency
noise.
Safety Earmuffs – A Dependable Gear for your ears
Perfect for any application in any profession, safety earmuffs are great for situations where people
move in and out of noise often during the work day. Earmuffs fit over the complete outer ear to form an
air seal so the entire circumference of the ear canal is blocked, and they are held in place by an
adjustable band. Earmuffs will not seal around eyeglasses or long hair, and the adjustable headband
tension must be sufficient to hold earmuffs firmly in place If you think your hearing may be affected by
noise at work, talk to your employer, who has a legal duty to assess and control the risks. As a general
guide, it is not necessary to put up with noise levels at work that are louder than a busy street.
Hearing protectors help those with damaged hearing or poor comprehension of language to understand
normal conversation and hear better. However, it is essential that persons with impaired hearing wear
earplugs or muffs to prevent further inner ear damage in very noisy places. In some cases hearing aids
can and should be used under earmuffs.
