2. Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese is an Italian-American actor, director and screenwriter. He made his
debut at the Chicago film festival with this 1967 film ‘who’s that knocking at my door’.
In 1964, he received a bachelor’s degree in film communications from NYU and went
on to get his masters degree in filmmaking at Tisch school of arts, one of the most
prestigious arts schools in America. Shortly after this, in 1968, Scorsese started
teaching the undergraduate filmmaking course at Tisch. He is also a member of the
Tisch dean’s council.
Scorsese has worked for a number of the most well known studios in the film industry
including Warner Bros, Columbia pictures, 20Th Century Fox, Universal, Paramount
and Netflix. Throughout his career, Martin Scorsese’s films have grossed over $2 billion
in the worldwide box office with The Wolf Of Wall Street being the highest profiting
film, generating $406 million at the box office.
I believe Martin Scorsese’s success can be credited to his hard work and dedication to
his dream. He took every opportunity he could to achieve his dream such as using his
time in university creating short films to broaden his knowledge and skills in
filmmaking.
A reason I may want to follow in the footsteps of Martin Scorsese and pursue a career
in directing is because as a director, you can let your creativity flow and embrace your
artistic freedom. You can experiment with different styles and techniques and find your
voice as a creator.
I consider Martin Scorsese as one of the greatest directors and filmmakers of all time. I
love the uniqueness and authenticity of his characters and the way he uses camera and
cinematography techniques to immerse the audience in his films.
3. George Lucas
George Lucas is an American producer, director, writer and entrepreneur. He is
known for creating a number of the worlds most well known movie franchises
such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones. In 1967, George Lucas founded American
Zoetrope alongside fellow filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola which throughout the
years has worked with many notable directors such as Paul Schrader, Robert Di
Niro and Robert Duvall. Lucas released his debut film in in 1971 called
THX:1138 with American Zoetrope and later released American Graffiti (1973).
Lucasfilm is a TV and film production company founded by George Lucas in
1971. It is with this company that George Lucas created his most memorable
work such as the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises. In 2012, Lucasfilm
was sold to The Walt Disney Company for $4.05 billion. To this day, Lucasfilm
has created 22 movies and 27 animated and live action series.
A factor I consider important to George Lucas’ success is his use of franchising
and series. He capitalised on people’s love for the Star Wars and Indiana Jones
movies and continued to make more, releasing consistent sequels and remakes of
both franchises since its original release in 1977, making sure each time to
change small details to keep the audience entertained and engaged. Another
factor is his entrepreneurial skills. Lucas released his debut film through a
studio he co-founded, with a budget of $777,000. the film had a gross profit of
$2.4 million.
Producer is a good career path to consider as it allows you to control the business
side of film production. It gives the opportunity to be creative also, including
script writing casting and marketing.
