Distributed Ledger Tech Applications - Health Report V1.5
1. DISTRIBUTED LEDGER TECH
APPLICATIONS - HEALTH
DLTA-H Report – Volume 1, Issue 4; 05 Nov 2018
(contact: info@sciencedistributed.com)
WELCOME
Welcome to the Distributed Ledger Tech Applications – Health or DLTA-H Report. This is the next phase of the weekly
newsletter Blockchain Healthcare SITREP that ran from Jul 2017 – Jul 2018 (archives here). DLTA-H is news, events,
commentary, and more relating to the application of blockchain/DLT to improve value and outcomes in health and
research.
We have some great blockchain and healthcare articles to highlight this week, along with some major developments in the
application of blockchain to science. Also pleased to announce a Blockchain Bootcamp for Providers, “What you need to
know Now about blockchain,” at the upcoming Node Digital Medicine Conference 2018 (details p2).
As an added bonus, we have an attached write-up of last week’s 3rd annual Distributed Health conference in Nashville
from our new Science Distributed Publications and Communications Lead, Natalie Marler.

BLOCKCHAIN/DISTRIBUTED LEDGER TECHNOLOGY NEWS
$170M Industry is Looking for A Blockchain Cure
The applications of blockchain in the healthcare sector are potentially endless, and are benefiting the whole ecosystem,
including patients, researchers, healthcare providers, as well as pharma, medtech, and insurance companies. The fact
that AI technology is also involved makes it even more groundbreaking, as it’s one of the few sectors where both
technologies can enhance each other in a tangible way. But like everything blockchain-related, it’s important to cut
through the noise and understand which solutions are sustainable and revolutionary.
“Blockchain is in some sense giving back control and
transparency to the user/ the patient, which means everyone
involved needs to think about how their jobs can evolve to be
consistent with this view"
Doc.ai co-founder and COO, Sam De Brouwer

Commentary: Great article from a new blockchain focused media outlet. I contributed (and was quoted). It is good to
see journalists like Yael Bizouati-Kennedy with experience outside the blockchain space focusing on this new area.
How blockchain and healthcare will fit together
Blockchain and healthcare have a powerful reason to get together: Data in desperate need of better care. Let's explore
some tests and projects that show the potential

Commentary: This is an excellent dive into some of the tech and cultural challenges and opportunities of blockchain for
healthcare with Marta Pierkarska, director of ecosystem at Hyperledger and Jason O’Meara of Quest Diagnostics.
2. IBM Targets Scientific Research in Latest Blockchain Patent
U.S. multinational IT company IBM plans to use blockchain to aid scientific research and provide a record of its results,
a new patent application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office revealed Nov. 8. IBM, originally filing the
concept in December last year, says it foresees “integrating a blockchain and data collection and analysis for open
scientific research.”

Commentary: Great movement on the R&D front for blockchain application in science but may not have as much
traction in the open science realm as it does in the permissioned application world of industry research. If you are in
science funding, administration, or execution, this is the canary in the coal mine that blockchain is coming to your world.

Scientific collaboration blockchain Orvium brings health academic publisher on board
Decentralized scientific publishing and collaboration platform Orvium OÜ announced a partnership today with leading
health-science publisher Partners in Digital Health, the company behind peer-reviewed journals Blockchain in
Healthcare Today and Telehealth and Medicine Today.
https://www.healthcare-informatics.com/article/hie/using-blockchain-nationwide-patient-index
Commentary: A great new partnership and experiment. If successful, it will make BHTY and TMT the first health
related peer-review journals to utilize the tech; a major step forward in the blockchaining of science. It remains to be seen
if Orvium’s initial coin offering approach will be a sustainable bridge to decentralization with 40% of the tokens remaining
centralized (ICO details). This project is worth tracking, especially comparative metrics (speed, access, cost, etc.).
UPCOMING EVENTS
Blockchain Healthcare East – University of DC – Washington, DC 14 Nov
The Blockchain in Healthcare conference will enable healthcare professionals to understand how blockchain technology
such as cryptocurrency, smart contracts, distributed databases, and public ledgers are, and will continue to transform
their sector.

Blockchain for Clinical Trials – IEEE Standards Association – Glasgow 14-15 Nov
In Scotland on 14-15 November 2018, we will discuss “How and When” blockchain will be adopted in clinical trials
operations. The Forum will feature a highly established innovation leaders from European consortia and multinational
pharmaceutical organizations, regulatory authorities, and blockchain solution companies.

Node Digital Medicine Conference 2018 – Microsoft Conference Center - NYC 05-07 Dec
The call for evidence in digital medicine is getting louder and the movement is gaining momentum. Join NODE Health
for the second annual Digital Medicine Conference where we will convene the leaders driving the movement to bring the
rigor of evidence-based medicine to digital health. The number of digital tools and applications available to reduce
inefficiencies, improve access, reduce cost, increase quality, and make medicine more personalized for patients is
growing exponentially. However, the tools and standards to evaluate their safety and efficacy are not well established.
Through the Digital Medicine Conference, NODE Health aims to bring structure, scalability, and reliability to the digital
medicine validation process. Join us along with over 400 Health System, Health Plan, Pharmaceutical, and Government
Clinical IT Innovation Leaders to discuss best practices for transformation, collaboration, and the implementation of
evidence based digital health applications.
