2. DEFINITION
● Arthritis: Inflammation of a joint. When joints are inflamed they can develop stiffness, warmth,
swelling, redness and Pain.
● Arthritis is a term referring term referring to more than 100 kinds of diseases that affect the join.
● The cause is mostly unknown.
● Common symptoms include joint swelling, lasting joint pain, and warmth in the joint.

3. Classification of Arthritis
● Non Inflammatory Arthritis
Eg. (Osteoarthritis)
● Inflammatory Arthritis
Eg. (Rheumatoid Arthritis)
● Metabolic Arthritis
Eg. (Gout)
● Infectious Arthritis
Eg. Septic Arthritis, Tuberculosis Arthritis, Fungal Arthritis, Viral Arthritis etc.
● Hemorrhagic Arthritis
Eg. Hemophilia and Sickle cell anemia

4. Osteoarthritis
● Most common type of non- inflammatory arthritis.
● Cartilage wears away leaving bones to rub against each other.
● Hands, Neck, Lower back or large bearing joints of the body are usually affected.
● Symptoms range from stiffness & mild pain that come and go with activities to severe pain that
continues even at rest.
● Growing older is biggest risk.

5. Rheumatoid Arthritis
● Autoimmune, symmetrical, poly - joint disease.
● Inflammation in the joints causes pain, swelling & stiffness that can lasts for hours.
● RA can attack almost any joint in the body, including the joint in finger, wrists, shoulders, elbows,
hips, knees, ankles, feet & neck.
● It also attacks organs like Heart , muscles, blood vessels, nervous system and eyes.

6. Metabolic Arthritis
● Gouty Arthritis - one of the most painful.
● Most often a problem in the big toe.
● Crystals of uric acid form in the connective tissue or joint spaces.
● Swelling, redness, heat, pain and stiffness.
● Obesity, alcohol or some medicines like aspirin, diuretics may worsen it.

to increase the range of motion and blood circulation.
