The synergy between Cloud and Mobility is gaining prominence today as 'cloud plus mobility' equals maximum return on consumerization. This document discusses the prime opportunities and concerns arising out of mobile cloud computing and what providers should take note of.
3. Mobile Cloud
Computing
Disruptive technologies
Cloud ComputingMobility
• Has the potential to foster
innovations and improve
productivity across Industries
• Everything from enterprise
applications to our music is
now using the cloud
• Can emerge as a tool for
making computing more
affordable in the developing
world
• Industry is shifting from the
PC/laptop to mobile devices
• 4.5 billion mobile subscribers
globally;
• The spread of affordable 3G
and 4G networks driving the
growth of mobile apps
Mobile devices are constrained by their memory, processing power, and battery life. But combined with
cloud computing, data processing and storage can happen outside of mobile devices.

4. Top factors for Interplay Mobility and Cloud High level Inferences
Mobile and Cloud computing will command new business budgets as
business execs want IT to prioritize mobile computing

Top factors driving mobility cloud solutions
adoption with corporate consumers are:
• Pressure from consumers as employees and
customers increasingly use smart phones
• Agility and efficiency improvement
• “Bring Your Own Device” initiative
• “Convenience” is the top driver consumers buy any
product or service linked to mobility
• Consumers perceive mobile devices and services as
an “All in one communication solution” catering to
basic phone email client, Business Apps, etc
Because multiple platforms are entering the corporate
world via individual users, this creates:
• Challenges and opportunities for management tool
providers, which have a large yet difficult market to
serve
Mobile cloud computing ensures agility and improved
efficiency not compromising on the processing power
5. The mobile cloud will allow for better access to and synchronization of data, improved scalability and
reliability, and an ability to collaborate and access business applications from virtually
anywhere and at any time

When Mobility and Cloud computing combine to become
Mobile Cloud it becomes more valuable
Security:
Data stored in local mobile
devices is prone to losses
due to theft, accidental
damages, system failures,
etc. All this could be
overcome by simply storing
data on the cloud
Computing Power:
Mobile devices have
limitations in terms of local
applications, local
processing power, etc; But,
the cloud will help the
mobile device do the
“heavy lifting” when
necessary
Platform Agnostic:
Cloud applications are
platform independent
irrespective of the mobile
device being used, i.e.
Android, IOS, Blackberry,
etc

Prime opportunities rise out of m-Commerce and BYOD while
the top concerns are related to Data Security
m-Commerce: m-
Commerce applications
using mobile devices are a
huge opportunity. E.g..
Mobile ticketing, Mobile
transactions, etc
BYOD: Bring Your Own
Device is the increasing
trend of employees
bringing their own devices
to work. Smartphones are
the most common
example.
m-Health Care:
m-healthcare offers
hospitals & healthcare
organizations a variety of
on-demand services on
clouds rather than owning
standalone applications
m-Banking: Banking
services combined with
NFC and location based
services could bring in the
next wave of innovation in
m-Banking
Opportunities
Data Security & Compliance risks: As the advent of BYOD
and cloud application rise there is an increasing concern
about data security. The IT adoption of BYOD has brought
to light myriad issues, including security, liability and
regulatory compliance risks.
Legal/Jurisdiction frameworks in Cloud Computing:
Sensitive data stored in data servers in another country
may not be conducive to the native Govt.
The Cloud Services Provider have to contend with the
Legal Systems under different Jurisdictions with not so
much of visibility as to where the Data resides and how it
is routed to the End User while passing through different
Legal Jurisdictions
Threats
Gartner predicts by 2017, half of employers will require employees to supply
their own device for work purposes
7. Provider should focus on full spectrum of mobile cloud
offerings while cashing in on the BYOD opportunity…(1)

Full spectrum of Services through Acquisitions or Alliances
• M-commerce is expected to touch USD200 billion by 2015, hence service providers
should focus on offering developing a full umbrella of offerings
• Providers are already moving in this direction For E.g. VMware acquiring AirWatch for
USD1.54 billion; SAP acquired Sybase in 2010, Citrix acquired Zenprise in 2012; IBM
purchased Fiberlink Communications in 2013; and Oracle acquired Bitzer Mobile also in
2013
Forge Local Partnerships
• Providers could forge partnership with local firms to overcome local
jurisdiction/legislation related legal issues - this would help acquire first hand
knowledge of local data privacy laws
8. Provider should focus on full spectrum of mobile cloud
offerings while cashing in on the BYOD opportunity…(2)

Strengthen BYOD offerings
• As enterprise bring your own device (BYOD) programs continue to become more
commonplace, 38% of companies expect to stop providing devices to workers by 2016,
according to a global survey of CIOs by Gartner, Inc.'s Executive Programs
• Hence providers need to strengthen BYOD related offerings like the new technologies
including mobile device management (MDM), mobile application management (MAM),
mobile content management (MCM) and enterprise mobility management (EMM)
solutions
9. Conclusion
P.S. Interplay is also referred to as convergence
Disruptive technological innovations like Mobility and Cloud are bound to change
the business dynamics. The interplay of Mobile and Cloud is bringing into light
new opportunities like BYOD, but their use raises some concerns with data
security.
To negotiate this change successfully service providers need to be able to foresee
and incorporate fluid end-to-end solutions.
