2. Interpretation of the brief
The brief then states that the requirement for this project is
to create a 'short documentary film'. Already knowing that
this entire project is based on culture in the digital age that
helps narrow things down immediately. So the baseline
ideas are to possibly interview people on how technology
has effected them and how they've seen it change over
time along with how I feel about that etc.
3. Target Audience
I created a survey to send to my class and other
people who will be viewing my documentary. The
purpose of this is to help me to plan my
documentary and to be sure I can cater my final
product towards the right audience
4. Research
The first piece of research I did was into the BBC to find out their core values,
I then looked into BBC Three and how they collaborated to create Northern
Voices.
I then did research into technology such as drones and 360 cameras to give
me an idea of how technology has changed in terms of cameras over time.
The final piece of research I did was research into documentary types to help
me decide how I want to create my documentary.
5. What I’ve learned from analysing existing
products
Analysing existing products has helped me to identify the different
documentary types whilst watching documentaries.
I wrote about tiger king and blackfish since I’ve seen both of those before so
I’m familiar with them already which made the process a lot easier.
I also watched ‘Miss Americana’ which is a Taylor Swift documentary which I
have also seen before.
Although I had seen all of these before, I decided to rewatch them to refresh
my memory and so I could write an accurate analysis of them.
6. Documentary Ideas
In my documentary I want to talk about how social media and fan
culture effects the music industry.
I plan on doing an interview where I ask people their opinions on this
topic. I also wish to incorporate the topic of the lack or female and
LGBTQ+ representation in the music industry and how that fact is
viewed on social media. Along with the fact that social media has the
power to both improve this or make it worse.
This is a topic that is very important to me as I am very passionate
about music and as someone who wishes to be a part of the music
industry in the future as someone who is both a part of the LGBTQ+
community and has seen how social media effects musicians rather for
the better or for the worse.
7. Design choices (fonts, colours, images, layout)
In terms of layout ideas, I want to have an introduction with the title of the
documentary and stating a short sentence on why I wanted to make this
documentary at the start, I also want to have credits at the end and subtitles
on the video.
In terms of font, I don't have a specific font that I want to use but it needs to
be easy to read, so preferably a larger size.
For imagery since I am talking about music and social media, I think it is
important to show some online communities based around certain groups or
musicians on social media sites.
8. Unique selling point
The unique selling point for this documentary is that it is something that
hasn't been done in depth before. In various music documentaries the
effects of social media have been touched on before and there are
documentaries specifically talking about social media.
However, there are no documentaries specifically about how social media
effects music.
9. What makes this idea right for the client?
The client is the BBC and Northern Voices. Northern Voices is aimed at
people between the ages of 16-24 and people of that age tend to
enjoy social media and music, so it fits the age group.
Northern Voices is very documentary based and since this is a
documentary that shows that it fits in some way.
10. How will this appeal to the correct audience?
The age group that I gathered through my audience research is 16-18 and
most people of that age are on social media and enjoy music.
I also know a lot of people who have found communities and friends
through social media because of the music that they listen to.
I feel that these factors show that my documentary will appeal to the correct
audience.
