GARY GOLDSTEIN, DVM, FAVD, DipAVDC
Dr. Goldstein graduated from the University Of Minnesota College
of Veterinary Medicine in 1984. In 1987, Dr. Goldstein became a
Charter Fellow in the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry and in 1992
became Board Certified in Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery.
He joined the faculty at the University Of Minnesota College Of
Veterinary Medicine in 2002. Dr. Goldstein served on faculty for 13 years
as Professor and Section Chief of the Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery
service. He spent six of those years as Associate Medical Director of the Veterinary

and implementation of medical standards. He was voted outstanding faculty of the year
in 2006, received the Dr. Peter Emily AVDC Service Award, presented to an outstanding
Diplomate for contributions made to further the field of veterinary dentistry in 2011,
and voted one of the 15 Top Dental professors in the Country in 2014.
DONNELL HANSEN, DVM, DipAVDC
Dr. Donnell Hansen is a board certified veterinary dentist and oral
surgeon from local BluePearl hospitals working out of both the
Eden Prairie and Blaine locations. A Minnesota native, Dr. Hansen
went to school at Luther College, graduated veterinary college at the
University of Minnesota, and spent a year in Stillwater, Oklahoma for
her internship before returning home for a residency at the University
of Minnesota. In 2009, Dr. Hansen joined forces with friends to form Moxie Center,
which is now known as BluePearl Veterinary Partners. While managing a busy clinical
caseload, Dr. Hansen also speaks nationally about the value (both from a patient care
standpoint and practice health perspective) of veterinary dentistry and oral surgery. Dr.
Hansen has a special interest in maxillofacial surgery, but honestly, loves the whole gig.

Extractions
Canine extractions including indications and principles for surgical and non-surgical
extractions, mucoperiosteal flap design, dental blocks, equipment and instrumentation
will be presented in lecture format. The laboratory will include hands-on procedures to
put these clinical skills into practice by reviewing extraction instrumentation, performing
various mucoperiosteal flap design, single rooted teeth extractions, canine dental blocks,
and fourth premolar and lower first molar surgical extractions as well as the principles
of tissue handling. Dental blocks will be reviewed so you can properly include pain
management into oral surgery procedures.
Understanding the stages of periodontal disease is important in being able to plan
for and treat periodontal disease appropriately. A practical approach to identifying,
diagnosing, and treating all stages of periodontal disease including dental charting, dental
radiographs, proper use of ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments will be reviewed and
demonstrated in the wet lab portion.
This lecture will focus on surgical extractions including, but not limited to, upper fourth
premolars, canine teeth, multi-rooted extractions and oral fistula identification and
repair techniques. We will also cover radiological indications for extractions and case
studies. The hands-on wet lab procedures will include reviewing mucoperiosteal flap
design techniques for difficult teeth such as upper and lower canine teeth, upper fourth
premolars, and lower first molars, and oral fistula repair techniques.
