Social Media Manager Interview- Jeffrey Cobb
1. INTERVIEW OF SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER:
JEFFREY COBB
Sarah Clark
Digital PR
Fall 2016
2. JEFFREY COBB
THE CHURCH AT ROCK CREEK:
STORY TELLER
Job Title: Story Teller or Social Media Manager
Organization: The Church at Rock Creek
Number of years in position: Year and a half
Previous occupation: Walmart
Educational background: Nashville, AR High School. Received
High School Diploma, will graduate from Liberty University
in December with a Bachelors Degree in Ministry.
3. KEY TAKE-AWAY 1
• You don’t necessarily have to go to college, and major in PR or
communication to have a job being a social media manager.
• I found it interesting that Jeffrey only went to a non-Christian university
for one year, and then decided that wasn’t for him and got called into
ministry.
• He initially was a Mass Communication major at Henderson State
University, which is where he found he was interested in the media side
of things.
• I found it interesting that he was actually on the radio for Henderson
State University.
4. KEY TAKE-AWAY 2
• Jeffrey discussed many times that he was an introvert, but loved getting
to know people. I found that interesting that as a communicator he
doesn’t enjoy getting out of his comfort zone very much when it comes
to people. So he has found a way that he doesn’t have to get out of his
comfort zone because he can connect with people through social media.
5. KEY TAKE-AWAY 3
• During our interview, I asked Jeffrey what his role was at the Church at
Rock Creek. He initially said his official title with the church was “story
teller.” I asked him what that exactly was, his response was, “I’m in charge
of telling the story of Rock Creek.”
• His role at Rock Creek is to let everyone know what’s going on in the
church, and to help people learn the story of Rock Creek, it’s background
and how it has changed over the years.
6. KEY TAKE-AWAY 4
• Jeffrey is a student youth minister at Rock Creek. I asked him how he
keeps up with social media trends for keeping the social media up-to-
date. He told me that he does a lot of his own research online. But most
of what he finds out is from the students he personally works with. They
let him know what is “cool” or “in.” I found that interesting because
Jeffery is only a few years older than me. So something that might be
cool to us, might not be necessarily “cool” to younger generations.
7. KEY TAKE-AWAY 5
• Jeffrey discussed with me that the most challenging part of his job is
being able to fit the least amount of words into something that will catch
people’s attention, and make them think about it.
• He told me how important writing was in his field. When he first started
this job, he wasn’t very good at grammar or spelling. So through trial and
error, Jeffery learned that writing was a skill he really needed to work on.
• He told me that the most important thing about the things he posts on
their social media is how much one simple post can effect a person.
