DESIGNING PROTOTYPING
Every Kat van Duinen piece is created with
painstaking care, birthed from Kat’s illustrations
and imagination, then simulated, adapted
and perfected. This development stage can
take months, with every aspect of a design
rigorously considered and tested.
PATTERN MAKING
Once a prototype meets Kat van Duinen
standards, a pattern is cut. Even intricate
details such as zip pullers receive a specialised
pattern, meticulously measured and coded.
SKIN SELECTION
Prior to creation, each style is carefully matched
to a perfectly suited skin. The unique rigidity,
size, thickness, pattern and aesthetic all make a
skin complementary to a specific product style.
Utmost care and time is devoted to sourcing
the ideal hide for every piece created.

CUTTING
A master craftsman is tasked with the
scrupulous role of cutting a skin according
to a style’s pattern. Great skill and years of
experience are required to place the puzzle
parts of a pattern onto a hide, ensuring
only the unblemished areas of the skin
are utilised. For larger styles where more
than one hide is required, the craftsman
undertakes the even more exacting task of
matching two different skins to produce a
single, unified piece. The product’s lining
is also cut and accurately matched to each
corresponding external leather section.
SKIVING
The inner layer of genuine leather,
especially ostrich, can have a fluffy, soft
texture that sheds easily. The back of
leather sections must therefore be skived
(scraped) before they can be attached to
their lining – a laborious process completed
by hand so the craftsman can intuit the
depth and pressure to be applied in order
to avoid skiving the skin too thinly.
EMBOSSING
Sections of leather are cut for embossing,
placed under a heated stamp and gently
pressed by hand. The embossing paper
is carefully peeled away to reveal the
pearlescent shapes created, and
embossed pieces are set aside to cool.
AFFIXING THE LINING
INTERNAL FEATURES
Details such as locks, clasps and external
metallic logo plates are applied and secured
between the lining and external skin.
The lining is glued to each corresponding
section of leather, ready for assembly.
At this stage, any features on the inside
of a style must be constructed, including
affixing embossed leather sections, zips
and pouches, and adding hardware like our
signature metallic Africa symbol, which is
hammered into place by hand.

STAINING
The edges of every section of a piece are
sealed by hand with a stain painted onto the
rims and corners of the leather. This first layer is
sanded back and the process repeated until a
strong, smooth, incredibly fine edge is formed.
ASSEMBLY
Each section is beautifully sewn together to
assemble a piece. Handles are connected,
piping added, gussets joined, and the sublime
architecture of the style takes shape.
FINAL TOUCHES
The Kat van Duinen swingtag is gently attached,
and the leather and metallic hardware are
carefully polished, ready for its new owner.

1 Ostrich Leather
The striking raised points that
give ostrich leather its unique
texture are the easiest way to
identify the skin from its exotic
counterparts. The delicate bumps
– covering only a third of the
whole hide – are the quill follicles
and form the ‘crown’ of the skin.
For some styles you have the
option to choose between the
prestigious Full Quill (quill follicles
cover entire piece) and Half
Quill (a blend of skin and quills
presents a striking pattern). It is
this rich, raised texture, the skin’s
incredible durability, as well as the
intricate process of producing this
skin, which make ostrich leather
luxurious.
2 Python Skin
Alluring, provocative: there is
something undeniably seductive
about snakeskin. Striking yet
sophisticated, each skin offers
its own unique motif of scales
to give an elegant, iconic finish.
Deriving its luxury status from the
expertise required to rear pythons,
its lightweight, long-lasting nature,
the rarity of sizeable, unblemished
hides and the manufacturing and
tanning skill required, python skin
has come to symbolise fabulously
decadent style. Kat van Duinen
uses Burmese Python, one of the
largest snake species in the world.
3 Crocodile Leather
The intricate grooves and
scales of crocodile skin are one
of nature’s most breathtaking
patterns – a rich, tactile texture.
The soft, elaborate area of the
belly is most covetable and is, of
course, the primary section of hide
utilised by Kat van Duinen. Kat van
Duinen works with Nile crocodile,
native to sub-Saharan Africa.
Breeding and rearing crocodiles
is complicated and costly, and
the production process is done
by hand to preserve quality. Add
in the durability of the skin and
its exquisite beauty, and you can
appreciate why crocodile leather
holds such value and desirability.
On some styles, two finishes are
available: Crocodile Safari and
Crocodile Classic.
4 Napa Leather
Perhaps the most recognisable
type of hide in the manufacturing
of leather goods, Napa is typically
derived from calf or lamb and
is noticeably soft and flexible.
Since farming for Napa leather
is considerably less complicated
than that of exotics, Napa is a
cost-effective option while still
feeling premium and luxurious.
Our Linings
All accessories are lined with
goat’s suede unless otherwise
stated. Some styles can be lined
with 100% cotton, African-print
textile. This printed fabric can
be selected once your order has
been confirmed.
What Is CITES?
CITES is an international treaty
drawn up to protect wildlife
against over-exploitation, as well
as to safeguard endangered
species. CITES certification is
legally required to export and
import certain species of animals,
including python and crocodile.
This process involves verifying
the source of origin of hides
and ensuring wild populations
remain protected. Kat van Duinen
complies with CITES regulations
wholeheartedly.

On some styles, two finishes are available: Crocodile Safari and Crocodile Classic. Crocodile Safari has a matte
appearance and is softer and more pliable. Crocodile Classic is lacquered with a gloss to give a high-shine
effect, making it more rigid. Due to this rigidity, some styles cannot be created in Crocodile Classic.
