Voxpop- Assignment 2
In 2011, Larry King, Snoop Dogg and
fellow celebrities took jabs at Donald
Trump during a Comedy Central celebrity
roast session. Sitting in the roast chair,
Trump received insults about his
appearance and failed business
investments - but the real kicker was that
Trump had decided to run for U.S
president. Fast forward to 9 November,
2016 and Trump is elected. What was once
the butt of endless jokes is now a laughing
or crying matter depending one’s political
outlook. According to Mrs. Clara Hart,
Chair for Refugee Congress in South
Dakota, the election of Trump comes at the
expense of people who are already
marginalised and disenfranchised. “People
are living in fear; these groups include the
Muslims, Refugees, Transgender, and Pro-
choice advocates.” A true underdog,
Trump seemed like a very unlikely
candidate. Moreover, his tendency to make
boisterous comments seemed to unnerve
many. Despite all this he won by popular
vote. Former Policy Official at the Home
Office, Mr. Stuart Young explained why
Trump appealed to voters. “American
people wanted a move away from political
dynasties that the Clintons and Bush
families represent. What we are seeing is a
decline in neoliberal attitudes and a rise in
state-centred domestic orientated values.
So whilst anti-immigrant sentiments may
be the output the input is frustration with
the current system.” Ms. Caitlin Guilford,
is an American-British citizen who voted
in the election. She said, “I don't believe
any politician [can be] perfect …but a
great leader [should be] smart, qualified,
understand the game of politics and
[represent the interests of] their
constituents. I don't believe [Trump] has
any of those mentioned characteristics.
Question to Public:
Do you think Donald Trump will make America great again?
Total word Count excluding questions and public respondent details: 350
“If you are in the
upper-class America
will be great for you.
But we’ll see”
“Not at all. But this
election could lead to a
revolution. If Trump
doesn’t get assonated
something big is going
to happen.”
“No, because I think
it’s time for Asia to
come into ascendency.
American consumers
are dependent on
buying foreign goods.”
“Absolutely not! He
has not defined what
he means by greatness
and he has no political
experience. He is a
divisive figure.”
