Highlights 2013

When I first came to St. Cloud nearly two decades ago, many people welcomed
my family and me to the community. The Foundation was about 10 years
old and we had our first generation of board members, many of whom
were the founders of the Foundation, cycling off the Foundation Board.
Looking for a way to keep them connected, my wife Brenda and I decided to host a holiday
social at our home. I must admit that I was somewhat concerned because I only had a coffee
maker that made eight cups. So we went right out and bought a 40-cup coffee maker. Feeling
prepared, I recounted the concern I had to Sister Colman O’Connell, who said “That is just
wonderful dear, but how much wine do you plan to have?”
Wine? Growing up in a fairly strict Scandinavian household, social gatherings
where wine and other spirits were served were not the norm. However, following
Sister Colman’s advice, we bought a case of wine. That evening, we ran out of
wine and only served one cup of coffee.
Welcome to Stearns County!
This is a story I have told before, but I am sharing it again because in
this annual report, we’re focusing on community connections — how we
connect with one another and the broader community. As you probably
know, understanding different cultures is usually quite important
when connecting.
At the Community Foundation, our mission is to engage people,
connect resources and build community. At the heart of what we
do — and at the heart of any community — are the connections of
residents with one another.
In these pages, we focus on those connections and how they make a
difference. Sometimes we make these connections at the Community
Foundation personally with the donors who look to us to align their
passions with their charitable goals. Other times we’re connecting
resources in the community by being a catalyst, or a cheerleader for
key initiatives to make our community better. By engaging people and
connecting resources, we build community.
Understanding cultural or other differences is important as we
build connections. Connections are the pathway for reaching our
potential — as individuals, as organizations and as a community.

Board of DirectorsHe used his gifts as long as he was able. Our community is a better place thanks to Andy Hilger.
Andy Hilger
Andy died this past year at 83,
leaving behind an immeasurable legacy because of the many connections he made.
Andy is recognized as a long-time pillar in the community and one of the original founders of the Central Minnesota Community Foundation and the United Way of Central Minnesota. Andy and his wife Carol were among the first individuals to establish a fund at the Community Foundation and serve as an example of connecting passions with charitable giving.
Andy was honored with many
awards for his deep-rooted commitment to giving back,
including the Alex Didier Award in Philanthropy in 1999 from CMCF.
“I didn’t really know Andy on a personal level until I visited with him about the award,” CMCF President Steve Joul remembers. “In a very personal discussion about his values and his mission of giving back to the community, he talked about the annual spiritual grounding he received through silent retreats he did at the Jesuit retreat house, near the Twin Cities. It was then he said, ‘You should come along.’“ Steve accepted the invitation. “To know and understand these retreats
is to know and understand Andy,”
Steve said.
In a quiet and reflective setting, the Jesuits help retreat participants focus on hearing the voice of God in their own lives and discovering the gifts they’ve been given. They believe developing and sharing these gifts is what life is
all about.
“Andy certainly knew and understood the wonderful gifts he had been given,” Steve said.
Andy had a deep passion for radio and built a successful business in the industry. He remained philanthropic throughout his career and even donated one of his stations, Spirit 92.9, to the Diocese of St. Cloud. Even after he sold his radio stations to Regent Broadcasting and retired, he launched an all-Catholic AM station, KYES.
“He used his gifts as long as he was able,” Steve said. “Our community is a better place thanks to Andy Hilger.”
FAREWELL, FOUNDER & FRIEND
Every once in a while, we unexpectedly meet that one person who changes the way we look at the world and helps shape our understanding of life. For many, that person was Andy Hilger.

The Community Priorities collaboration began in 2010 when the Central Minnesota
Community Foundation made a small grant to send a group of community leaders to
Dubuque to see what had made that small city in Iowa so successful.
The visit led the St. Cloud area community to ignite its own community visioning process in 2011.
The Community Foundation partnered with the Initiative Foundation and the St. Cloud Times
to lead this process that has identified and tracked key Community Priorities. The partners host
regular progress meetings, and in 2013 convened community members to vote on new priorities.

The Central Minnesota Community Foundation, together with the Initiative Foundation, awarded
$55,000 in grants this past year to continue to drive progress on some of the Community
Priorities voted on by community members. Here’s a look at the grants.
GROW VOLUNTEER PROJECT
The United Way of Central Minnesota received $7,500 to engage 100 new adult volunteers
and connect them with at least 100 youth. This effort focuses on developing multi-cultural and
multi-generational service opportunities and activities. This grant also supports increasing
awareness of Volunteer Central, the central place to learn about local volunteer opportunities.
REGIONAL AIR SERVICE
The City of St. Cloud received $7,500 to provide the data analysis and materials needed to
entice a carrier to serve central Minnesota and effectively market current air service.
CRADLE TO CAREER COLLABORATIVE
The United Way of Central Minnesota received $10,000 to lead a series of efforts for the Cradle
to Career collaborative effort. The grant will help establish a talent portal through the Greater
St. Cloud Development Corporation, engage 25 underserved youth in internship or career
related experiences, establish a long range plan for the Partner for Student Success initiative
through the St. Cloud School District, and provide education for child care providers and parents.
CULTURALLY DIVERSE ECONOMY
The Central Minnesota Sustainability Project, as fiscal sponsors for the Collaborative for a
Culturally Diverse Economy, received $7,500 to lead a community visioning process that will
engage 200 people in forming and launching a plan for an international marketplace with
local entrepreneurs.
FOSTERING BUSINESS GROWTH
The Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation received $7,500 for a GIS Planning tool. This
tool will make it easy to search for commercial property inventory for business growth and
employment enhancement.
DEVELOPING TALENT
The Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation plans to use a $7,500 grant to develop a talent
portal to match people’s skills with employment opportunities.
TRAIL MAKING
The City of St. Cloud received $7,500 to create a St. Cloud Placemaking Plan focused on
developing the community’s trail system. This plan aims to support local government entities in
the planning of interconnected trail networks that will enhance quality of life across the region.

Legacy SocietyThe Sustainability Project established a program that enables growers to turn their plots into revenue generating businesses.
Maine Prairie Community Garden
“When you enter the garden, everything else falls away,” said Katrina Pierson, who founded the organization and now serves as chair of the Board of Directors.
It’s that vision that led the Women’s Fund to award the Central Minnesota Sustainability Project with a grant to establish the first garden in 2010. Since then, the Sustainability Project has doubled the size of the Maine Prairie Garden and added a second community garden that together serve 121 gardeners — and their families.
“The garden is flooded with hundreds of people when we first open it in the spring,” Katrina said. “We always have a waiting list. It’s been hard to turn people away.” Plans are underway to add a third community garden.
In addition to providing access to healthy food, the Sustainability Project established a program that enables growers to turn their plots into revenue generating businesses. The Project helps individuals sell the healthy goods at local farmer’s markets and to local restaurants.
“We are nowhere near realizing the potential of this in this community,” Katrina said. “The demand for our services is more than we’re able to fulfill at this time.”
A new apprentice program, provided in partnership with the Land Stewardship Project, connects gardeners interested in agricultural business with educational programs and farmer mentors. The two apprentices currently in the program are working alongside farmers and developing their own business plans.
“This is where the economic development part of our mission is really coming to life,” Katrina said.
Under the leadership of its first executive director, Autumn Brown, the Sustainability Project will launch a pilot for an international market in 2014 to further economic, cultural and social opportunities.
SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT
The well-manicured rows of plants and artful displays created to nurture their growth at the Maine Prairie Community Garden tell a story about people who have come together to not only feed their families or make a living, but also make connections across cultures, generations and economic status.

Establishing a Fund
Donors can use a variety of assets — from appreciated stock to real estate to cash — to make gifts. They may give to any of the funds listed on the following pages or may establish named funds, either through an Acorn Fund which builds to a minimum of $20,000 before paying out grants, or with a minimum gift of $20,000.
There are nearly as many different kinds of funds at the Community Foundation as there are donors, since each fund may be customized to meet a particular charitable goal. There are, however, several general types of funds that donors may select from when choosing to make a gift to the Community Foundation. Currently the Foundation has more than 580 component funds of the following varieties.
A fund designed to support one or more specifically chosen charities is a designated fund. If a charity changes its mission or type of services, or goes out of business, the Community Foundation directs grants to a similar organization. In this way, the donor supports the organizations he or she chooses, but ensures that the gift will remain relevant over time.
A donor advised fund allows the donor to participate directly in the grantmaking
process by making recommendations for grants to specific organizations from the fund.
A donor advisor also may work closely with the staff of the Community Foundation to select grant recipients.
When a donor desires to establish a fund for a specified, broad purpose, a
field of interest fund is the appropriate choice. Donors with particular issues of
concern — children’s services, the environment or helping the poor, for example — may
focus their giving by setting up this type of fund. The Community Foundation then
makes grants to meet current needs in the specified field.
A donor may establish a scholarship fund to honor a loved one or simply as a way to
assist young people with their education.
An unrestricted fund is one of the most flexible ways to give, since it may be used for any purpose approved by the Foundation’s Board of Directors. This fund allows the Community Foundation to identify community needs and award grants designed to address those needs.
agency funds have been established at the Community Foundation by nonprofit organizations who appreciate the Foundation's fund management expertise. Some of the funds are permanent endowments; some act as a reserve fund for the charities.
Establishing a Fund
However, they also wanted to help people right away, so they granted out a portion of the proceeds from their annual Women on Stage fundraiser to support local programs for girls, women in transition and elder women — only setting aside a portion for the future in the endowment.
In June 2013, the Women’s Fund Grants Committee allocated one-half of the Women on Stage proceeds to support local programs; the other half was added to the endowment. With this addition to the endowment, Barb was able to announce, on her last day before retiring as director of donor relations with the Central Minnesota Community Foundation, that the endowment surpassed the $1 million mark.
“While there have been many gracious donors, the money did not just appear; someone had to reach out and ask,” said Melinda Sanders, the new director of donor relations at the Central Minnesota Community Foundation.
“The women behind the Women’s Fund took it upon themselves to organize many successful Women on Stage events to draw attention to the Women’s Fund and gain financial support. They also reached out to nonprofit organizations, encouraging them to see their services through the eyes of girls and women, and to work together with them to develop new ideas and initiatives to help women and girls live their best lives — for generations to come.”
The Women’s Fund focuses on supporting:
w Girls — Developing confident, strong and empowered girls
w Women in Transition — Building capacity of women experiencing significant change in their lives
w Elder Women — Addressing unique issues women face as they age
Over the years, the Women’s Fund has granted over $750,000 to nearly 50 programs in the local community. Over the years, the Women’s Fund has granted over $750,000 to nearly 50 programs in the local community.
Women's Fund
REACHING $1 MILLION
In 2002, a small group of women led by Barb Carlson created a vision to support the empowerment of women and girls in the community, and to ensure that support continued well beyond their lifetimes. Could they build an endowment to ensure funding for programs for women and girls that would last forever? They believed so. And they set a goal of $1 million.

Chris Shorba
professional award in philanthropy
As a child, Chris Shorba would create extensive sketches of everything
from submarines to golf courses, signing and dating each one,
wondering if some day they would end up in an art museum. That
fondness for art led Chris to be among the community’s top advocates
for arts programs and activities.
“He has given the best of his abilities and talents to make this
community better, especially in the area of the arts,” said Mimi Bitzan,
member of the CMCF Board of Directors. Chris has served as the chair
of the United Arts Board and as a fundraiser for the area’s leading
organizations. “He often asks, ‘What more can I give?’ and I always
answer him that we’re only asking for an arm and a legacy, and Chris
has given us both,” said Cindy Hawker, executive director of United Arts
of Central Minnesota.
Chris transformed a passion for the arts into a way of giving back. Volunteering is not an
extracurricular activity for Chris. It’s a way of life. Just in the past few years, he has also
served in leadership roles on the CentraCare Health Foundation Board and Central Minnesota
Transportation Alliance. He brought that commitment to community service to his work as a
certified public accountant at KDV for over two decades, inspiring both his colleagues and
clients to give back. “He doesn’t just volunteer,” said Loren Viere, managing partner at KDV.
“He jumps in and becomes very active.”
Barb Carlson
president’s award
Barb Carlson came to the Central Minnesota Community Foundation
excited that she would be able to serve not just one nonprofit in this
community, but virtually every organization.
“Barb has a unique ability to connect with individuals,” CMCF President
Steve Joul said. “In making those connections, she brought out the best
in people so they could see what a difference they could make with their
lives and in the lives of others.”
Barb brought a passion for issues that face women and girls to CMCF
and created the vision for the Women’s Fund in St. Cloud. Barb’s
leadership has been instrumental in growing CMCF and developing

Jerry and Elaine Bauerly
alex didier award in philanthropy
For Jerry and Elaine Bauerly, it is not enough for them to be
generous with what they have been given. They also want to
instill that same value in their children and grandchildren.
It’s in that spirit that weeks before Christmas, Elaine
provided each of her grandchildren $150 and directed them
to give it away — in any way they wished as long as it helped
an individual or organization in need. “There’s a certain
magic in giving,” Elaine said.
On Christmas, each of their grandchildren shared how they
had blessed others with the dollars they had been given.
They shared the lessons they learned — and their joy of
giving left Elaine in tears.
“It doesn’t take long to see that they live out their values and their spirit of philanthropy in the
way they raised their family and encourage their grandchildren. They are a model for the
community,” said Maryanne Mahowald, vice-chair of the CMCF Board of Directors and former
chair of the Women’s Fund Advisory Board.
Jerry and Elaine have given a tremendous amount of their personal time, talent and treasure
to this community and have been instrumental in many local causes. The couple would do just
about anything to help this community — even open their rural Sauk Rapids home to 900 people
for a fundraiser. Their dedication and hospitality propelled Women on Stage to a new level and
helped the event raise more than $1 million for local programs that empower women and girls
through the Women’s Fund.
But nothing means more to them than passing on a family tradition of giving back and helping
others to their three grown children, Shelly, Rick and Dena, and to their grandchildren.
“When you put them all together, the impact of the Bauerlys just has tentacles that go out all
over the place and it will last for a long time,” said Barb Carlson, recently retired CMCF director
of donor relations.

affiliates and other Women’s Funds. “She believes deeply in the value and potential of giving
back,” Steve said, “and she did it day in and day out, in big ways and in small ways.”
Barb gave people the opportunity to see community needs, connected them with causes and
helped them experience making a difference. It was not simply her job as a director of donor
relations. It was her purpose in life.
“Giving of anything — of your time, of your talent, of your passion, of your energy, of your
resources — is what makes living worthwhile,” Barb said.
Maxine Barnett
athena award
Few have made as great of an impact on women’s issues in this
community as Maxine Barnett. For more than three decades, she
dedicated herself to improving the health, welfare and rights of
battered women and their children.
A fighter and a friend, Maxine not only raised awareness about
domestic violence, but she also developed solutions that are changing
and saving lives. “Maxine’s example has been something for individuals
from all walks of life to emulate,” said Molly Renslow, 2012 ATHENA
Award recipient.
Maxine took Anna Marie’s Alliance from a small safe house to a
progressive shelter with one of the most extensive set of wraparound
services for women and children in the nation. “Maxine’s contributions
to the women and children of our community are enormous,” said Barb
Carlson, 2004 ATHENA Award recipient. “They range from providing simple safety to setting
standards for relationship behavior to educating police officers to challenging the criminal
justice system.”
Maxine retired in 2013 after 33 years as executive director of Anna Marie’s. “She has saved lives
and she has taught others to save lives,” said Johanna Klinkner, a former Anna Marie’s client
and longtime advocate at the shelter.
To further honor Maxine, the Women’s Fund renamed an education fund as the Maxine Barnett
Fund for Anna Marie’s. The fund, established in 2006, provides educational support for clients
at Anna Marie’s to foster independence.

The couple recently created a donor advised fund with the Community Foundation to make the most of the tax advantages of giving appreciated securities.
Rick and Sandy Paulsen
GIVING STARTS IN ALEXANDRIA
For Rick and Sandy Paulsen, giving back starts close to home. The couple’s charitable giving has grown out of the connections they have made professionally and personally since moving from southern Minnesota to Alexandria in 1981.
Some of their favorite local charities include Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum and Gardens (where Rick serves as treasurer), United Way of Douglas & Pope Counties, Habitat for Humanity, Lakes Area Humane Society and Calvary Lutheran Church.
The couple recently created a donor advised fund with the Community Foundation to make the most of the tax advantages of giving appreciated securities. “We found the Alexandria Area Community Foundation to be a convenient organization to work with, and the fund will help ensure our giving can continue into the future,” Rick said.
While starting locally, the Paulsens’ giving doesn’t end there. Other favorite causes include Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge, World Vision and the Rotary Foundation. Sandy plans to travel to Guatemala on a service trip with Rotary and Common Hope.
“It’s about helping people out and making a difference in people’s lives. And, that’s very personally satisfying,” Sandy said about their philanthropy and her service as vice president of the Douglas County Hospital Auxiliary.
Their giving also goes beyond helping just people. Sandy is moved by the work the Humane Society performs, and Rick has a passion for wildlife habitat preservation and restoration. He is a loyal supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl and Pheasants Forever, and he currently serves as the treasurer of the Pioneer Heritage Conservation Trust.
The Paulsens restored some of their own land to wetlands and natural prairie, and established a permanent conservation easement to preserve it for generations to come.
“People have to give from the heart,” Rick said. “When you make a donation and know the charity will be a good steward, you should feel good.”

DIFFERENCE MAKER GRANTS
The Alexandria Area Community Foundation awarded $80,000 in Difference Maker Grants in 2013 to the Alexandria Area Arts Association and the United Way
of Douglas & Pope Counties.
"These grants are designed to bring about lasting, positive change in the Alexandria area community," said Dave Vagle, chair of the Community Programs Committee and vice chair of the AACF board. "It's the desire of the Community Foundation to not only provide financial support, but also leadership and connections to advance these two important community causes."
The 2013 grants support:
w The Alexandria Area Arts Association for building renovations to house growing educational and
outr
each programs and performance groups.
w United Way for House Keys, a new program
de
veloped to provide safe and sustainable
housing f
or families and individuals experiencing
homelessness in
Douglas County.
AACF started the Difference Maker Grant program in 2012 and received nearly $1.3 million in requests in the past year. The grants were made possible by the AACF endowment and a grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation.

Whether through education, innovation in energy sources, or philanthropy, the Hunts have been game changers, and the community has been the beneficiary.
Lynn and Paul Hunt
BUILDING COMMUNITY CAPITAL
Lynn and Paul Hunt talk about success like a musician credits the band. “It’s a symphony,” Lynn said. “We could never do it alone. We can play our part, but we need others, sometimes in harmony and sometimes to counter our ideas and make us better. I thank every one of them for being there.”
The Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation recognized Paul and Lynn Hunt with the 2013 Award in Philanthropy as BLACF celebrated its 15th anniversary.
Lynn and Paul most recently founded Hunt Utilities Group, a coalition of minds focusing on research and development of alternative energies as well as ways to save energy. They simultaneously started Happy Dancing Turtle, a nonprofit group centered on environmental education.
To Paul, philanthropy is much more than money. The giving of time is equally important. “Not everyone is blessed with the kind of success that allows them to give money,” he said. “But all of us have something equally as valuable — our time. Where would our organizations be without volunteers?”
When it comes to giving, the Hunts credit their parents for a sense of generosity and a belief that it is important to give back to the community. Neither came from a privileged background. Just the opposite. Paul remembers counting tator tots at dinner to make sure everyone got their fair share.
“I know what it is like to go without,” Lynn said. “I know what it is to be hungry as a child. I know what it feels like to be lonely and call the crisis line as a teen looking for someone to talk to.”
Lynn received an unexpected scholarship while at Central Lakes College. It made the difference between staying in school or not. She went on to earn a Bachelor Degree in Business Management from Concordia College, and then an MBA from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
One of the core areas of the couple's philanthropy is education. “If you want to change someone’s life, education is a game changer,” Lynn said.
Whether it was through education, innovation in energy sources, or philanthropy, the Hunts have been game changers, and the community has been the beneficiary.

PROFESSIONS TO PASSIONS
Although they both hold high profile positions in the Willmar-area community, Dr. Lachlan and the Honorable Kathryn Smith are recognized for their quiet leadership through service and a desire to reflect credit to others.
The couple leads through example, giving extensive time, energy, expertise and financial resources to many local nonprofits. For that, the Willmar Area Community Foundation recognized them with the 2013 Award in Philanthropy.
Lach grew up in Ames, Iowa, went to medical school at the University of Iowa and completed his residency at Valley Medical Center in Fresno, California. He now specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Affiliated Community Medical Centers in Willmar.
Kit graduated from Edina High School. She received degrees from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa and attended law school at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. She worked with the Schmidt, Thompson, Johnson and Moody law firm in Willmar before being appointed district court judge in 1997.
Kit served as lead judge for the Kandiyohi County Children’s Justice Initiative. She chaired the Minnesota Supreme Court’s Juvenile Delinquency Rules Committee and served on the Court’s Racial Fairness Committee, Committee for Equality and Justice and the state’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee.
Lach and Kit have lived in the Willmar area since 1981, where they raised their two sons, Will and Ben. The couple has
a long history of serving in leadership
roles for a variety of nonprofits in the community and being a part of positive change and growth.

COMMUNITY BUILDER AWARDS
The Willmar Area Community Foundation recognized two organizations building community:
The Otto Bremer Foundation provided the initial grant in 1998 to help establish the Willmar Area Community Foundation. The Bremer Foundation has awarded more than $406 million in the communities it serves since its inception in 1961.
Bremer Bank in Willmar strives to help build healthy, vibrant communities. A significant partner with the nonprofits, businesses, organizations and donors in our area, Bremer Bank in Willmar shares its exceptional employee-volunteer resources to positively impact communities throughout the region.

They came with what felt like a few nickels 30 years ago and created a legacy of giving back in big and small ways.
Janet and Tom Grones
With a young family at home, the couple seized teachable moments with their children. During Lent, they did not simply fill the rice boxes they received with spare change. The family ate only rice for one dinner each week and put what it would have cost to eat their regular meal in the collection box for world missions.
“To have a big heart, it has to be nourished,” Janet said. “It doesn’t grow on its own.”
The couple took a big step in the spring of 2013 when they sold their majority ownership in GeoComm, Inc. to Granite Equity, a St. Cloud-based private equity firm focused on local ownership.
Trained as a paramedic and having led the Stearns County emergency services department, Tom started GeoComm to help people in their time of greatest need. He imagined better systems for emergency response. Under Tom and Janet’s leadership, GeoComm grew to serve more than 12,000 dispatchers in 800 emergency 911 call centers, helping to keep more than 84 million people safe.
The business sale created an opportunity for the couple to enhance their philanthropy. By giving company stock to a donor advised fund at the Foundation before the sale, Tom and Janet leveraged tax benefits that will allow them to do more to support their favorite causes.
Much of the couple’s philanthropy is focused on meeting people’s basic needs so that everyone has a chance
to be successful. “There, but for the grace of God, go I,” Janet said. They are also interested in civic projects like parks and historical restoration, which help make the community a great
place to live.
“In a very real sense, the community had a heart and reached out to us,” Tom said remembering the couple’s humble beginnings. Their fund at the Foundation was a way for them to return the favor. “It is part of what you do,” Tom said. “You give back to the broader community.”
SALE PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY
Tom and Janet Grones made a connection early on in the central Minnesota community. They came with what felt like a few nickels 30 years ago and created a legacy of giving back in big and small ways.

CONTRIBUTIONS SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE FOUNDATION IN 1985
† Deceased
16. Connections 29 30 Annual Report 2013
She wanted to make good decisions that would honor her husband and leave a lasting legacy for their family.
Diane Wojtanowicz
Among those decisions was a condo in St. Paul. It had been the product of success in farming and with the ongoing success of the business in Rice, Diane desired to continue to pay it forward. She wanted to donate it to charity, but in the wake of her husband’s death, she didn’t know where to begin. Her attorney connected her to the Minnesota Real Estate Foundation. She learned how she could receive the tax benefits that year and decide later which charities to support.
The week between Christmas and New Year’s, MReF accepted the property as a gift and helped her establish a donor advised fund at the Foundation. “This was a win-win for everybody,” Diane said. “It left all sorts of options. Down the road, as a family, we could talk about how the money would be used.”
Diane appreciates the freedom to plan her philanthropy on her own terms and use it as an opportunity to involve her six grown children in the process — and pleasure — of giving back. “Now if we see a need in the community we wish to support, we can,” she said.
Diane and her husband have
long supported CentraCare Health Foundation, St. John’s Boys’ Choir and education. After her husband’s battle with cancer, she also saw the importance of supporting healthcare— research and care. Women’s issues
are a passion of hers as well. She serves on the Women’s Fund Advisory Board at CMCF.
“I have been blessed with a comfortable life, good health and a healthy family. I would like to help others, in some small way, achieve those same things.”
Diane grew up in a big family in rural central Minnesota and raised her children on the Wojtanowicz family’s century farm. They understand the value of hard work and community.
The lesson she did not expect was this: “When in doubt, do nothing,” Diane said. Working with MReF allowed her to take the time she needed. “I didn’t have to make a real commitment to any one cause or charity at that time,” Diane said. “MReF gave me freedom.”
GIFT OF FREEDOM
When Diane Wojtanowicz’s husband died of cancer, she faced many decisions. Understanding which decisions needed to be made right away and which ones could wait is what helped her get through the initial days. She wanted to make good decisions that would honor her husband and leave a lasting legacy for their family.
