 An AR system generates a composite view
for the user which combines the real scene
and the virtual scene with additional
information.
 Extension of Virtual Reality.
 Basic idea of AR is to
superimpose graphics,
audio and other sensory
enhancements over a real
world environment in real
time.
 Main hardware components
for AR includes: display,
tracking, input devices,
sensors and processors.
 Handheld Devices
 Head Mounted Display
 Spatial Display
 To enhance a person’s
performance and
perception of the
world.
 Create a system such
that no user can tell
the difference between
the real world and the
virtual augmentation of
it.
 X-Ray vision; superimpose internal organs or
skeleton on any given body.
 Perform computer instructed surgeries.
 Medical training
 AR currently being for repair and maintenance of
automobile and military vehicles.
 We can also use AR, in car and in aircrafts
navigation systems and it appears to be very
useful and handy to find your destination.
 For example: Wikitude Drive is a unique GPS
navigation app because users attach their phone to
their windshield, and the app uses the phone's
camera to capture a live image of the road ahead
and overlays 3D driving directions on top of it.
 It is being used for navigation
 For example : it is particularly useful for tourists to
find different restaurants , gas stations and hotels
and tourist attractions .
 Advantages :
i. It saves time
ii. It also saves money
 In learning situations that are partly virtual like AR,
students can manipulate objects that are not real, and learn
tasks and skills. The benefit with AR learning is that there
are no "real" errors.
 These types of training provide opportunities for more
authentic learning and appeal to multiple learning styles.
 Augmented Reality applications that can enhance
textbooks too have the power to engage a reader in ways
that have never been possible.
 Augmented reality is also being used in games.
 If we take a look at the new Xbox kinect sensor we
see that they are already using this technology.
 The games like kinect pets is using this technology
and its quite impressive.
 It is also being used in the new version of play
station portable which is named play station vita PS
Vita. We can create augmented reality the way we
want.
 It is also being used in shopping in different ways.
Some companies have launched different mobile
apps for this purpose.
 For example :Amazon has launched a new mobile
app for the iPhone called Flow that smoothly
combines augmented reality with e-commerce.
 GPS doesn’t work well indoors.
 Outdoors it is only accurate within 30 ft.
 Improved image technology is must for fluid AR
experience.
 People losing their grip on reality.
 More misleading advertisements.
 Very expensive.
 Enhancement of negative ideas esp. in AR games.
 Augmented reality is also being used in civil
engineering in 3D designing.
 Vidente system is a device which is being used for
civil engineering constructions.
 An AR device is built around the UMPC mounted on
special handheld frame equipped with joystick like
controls for users.
 AR is the “NEXT BIG THING”, it will completely
revolutionize our world.
 Everything from medical to education to entertainment.
EVERYTHING!!!
 AR applications are already being used on smart phones,
laptops, tablets, PCs etc, but from what you have seen
today it’s a far cry from what it could and will be.
