2. PDHPE as a KLA has two areas: Personal
Development and Health (PDH) and Physical
Education (PE).
When combined together, these two areas
help to develop students’ notions regarding
safety, identity and physical activity.
Explicitly, PDHPE aims at developing skills in
problem solving, decision-making,
communicating, interacting and moving.
3. “Individuals lead a healthy lifestyle when they live
in a way that allows them the greatest chance of
achieving and maintaining mental, physical,
social and spiritual wellbeing. When individuals
are well informed on health issues and have a
sense of control about the decisions they make,
they are more likely to experience positive
relationships, improved quality of life and less
illness. PDHPE programs play a unique role in the
development of students’ knowledge,
understandings and practical skills that lead to
better health” (Board of Studies, 2006).
4. As you know, Primary Teachers are to teach every
KLA to their class. Personally, I place importance
on PDHPE as a significant KLA as it is designed to
promote students’ holistic development. It gives
students’ the opportunity to improve movement
skills and practice the physical activity that they
love, whilst also providing a safe and supportive
environment for students’ to discover their
personal identity, to understand key components
regarding safe and healthy lifestyles and to
develop interpersonal relationships with their
peers.
5. As a teacher, my plan is to implement the
PDHPE syllabus within my classroom
environment. That isn’t to say that the
student’s will spend the majority of our
classroom time outdoors. Rather, the skills
learnt in PDHPE (problem solving, decision-
making, communicating, interacting and
moving) are applicable to all KLAs.
