2. What is Digital Citizenship?
Digital Citizenship is the process of teaching and using
technology safely and appropriately. This is particularly
important in schools, because we want students to be
safe online.
Digital Citizenship includes (ISTE):
● Using technology to improve the community
● Having positive and respectful interactions
with others online
● Using technology to make your voice heard
● Determining how valid an online source of
information is

3. Why is Digital Citizenship Important?
Digital Citizenship teaches students seven key concepts (Zook, 2022):
1. Empathy
2. How the internet works
3. Understanding user data
4. Practicing digital literacy
5. Acknowledging the digital divide
6. Practicing digital wellness
7. Securing digital services
Each of these concepts teaches students how to use technology safely in the
classroom, as well as what is expected of them.

4. What is Cyber Safety?
Cyber Safety is the safe and responsible use of information and
communication technologies. Such technologies include the internet, social
media, online games, smartphones, and tablets (Brainstorm Productions).
Cyber Safety teaches students how to stay safe in online environments
(Brainstorm Productions).
Some key safety concerns students face include (Brainstorm Productions):
● Privacy
● Exposure to inappropriate or explicit content
● Contact with strangers/receiving unwanted contact from people
● Cyberbullying, aggression and online hate
5. Why is Cyber Safety Important?
Children spend a lot of time online - more than
ever before. The internet is part of our daily lIves,
and if children are going to be using it, they need
to be doing so safely (Brainstorm Productions).
The online world offers opportunities for
learning and social development, but it also
increases the risk of online harm (Brainstorm
Productions).
With assistance and support from teachers and
parents, children can safely use the internet and
enjoy doing so.

6. How We Promote Cyber Safety in our Classroom:
It is necessary that we teach students how to be safe when using technology.
Some ways our school promotes Cyber Safety include (Walton, 2022):
● Having students signing a school policy about internet usage.
● Teaching students about online privacy (password safety).
● Using a cyberbullying reporting system to support our students.
● Having students be involved - listen to their thoughts on technology.
● Keeping current with technology.
● Providing resources to students, and parents, about internet safety.
