I chose to do my flipbook on the topic of location services in smartphones. By exploring common uses of location services including iBeacons I created a flipbook that I believe gives many examples of how location services are used, and how they will be used in the future.
2. Today, most smartphones have location services
which can locate where you are, what stores you
go into, and more (1).
Mike Goldberg via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
3. “74 percent of
smartphone users
in the United
States are
accessing their
mobile device's
location-based
services.” (2)
Marcello Dalla Rena via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
4. Common uses of location
services include:
• “Checking-In” on social
media (Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram etc)
• GPS for directions, or
locating nearby stores
• Traffic and weather
updates (3) (4)
Craig Averall via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
5. Facebook is a popular use of location services. People
often check into where they are, or use Facebook’s new
nearby friends feature. (5)
Marco Pakoeningrat via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
6. Nearby Friends is a new Facebook feature that uses your
smartphone’s GPS to tell your Facebook friends when you’re
nearby, assuming both parties have the feature turned on. (6)
Even though this is an optional feature, are location
services going too far?
Arbyreed via Flickr

7. Location services make some users uncomfortable about
sharing too much. Over 90% of Americans feel they’ve lost
control over personal data. (7)
Often in the fine print apps will explain that they will be
collecting information about the user through location services.
g4ll4is via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
8. “A dozen or so popular
Android apps collected
device location – GPS
coordinates accurate to
within 50 meters – an
average 6,200 times, or
roughly every three
minutes.” (8)
Is this too often? Do
companies need to know
where we are 24/7?
Issa via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
9. In a two week study the app Groupon collected data 1062 times,
about once every twenty minutes. (9) It seems unlikely that an
app devoted to finding local deals and coupons needs to know
where you are three times an hour.
Mike Mozart via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
10. Norman M. Sadeh, a professor who co-authored the study
remarked that in order for Groupon to check someones location
every twenty minutes “The person would have to be accessing
Groupon in their sleep.” (10)

11. iBeacons
Introduced in Apple’s iOS7
iBeacon was added into iOS location services by Apple. It is a
technology that can track your position and movements in
places like stores and restaurants. (11)
Jonathan Nalder via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
12. iBeacon technology has a great amount of potential uses. It can
be used to simplify the brick-and-mortar retail and airport
experience, and more. iBeacon’s technology can have economic
impact in the trillions. (12)
Jonathan Nalder via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
13. Jakub Krzych, the CEO of Estimote sees massive potential in
iBeacons. With Uber you step out of the cab and you are
automatically charged. Krzych says that when he left a regular
taxi recently, he forgot to pay. He believes physically handing
over cash or swiping a card is outdated. (13)
Noticias Seguridad via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
14. Krzych envisions walking into an airport with a ticket
downloaded on an iPhone’s Passbook. He sees this as what he
calls “Uber-ization”. iBeacon sensors in the terminal would
recognize you and direct you toward security.
“It’s really ridiculous the process for the airport,” Krzych said.
“It’s very similar to how it was for 50 or more years.” (14)Dan Paluska via Flickr Creative

15. Shopkick is one of the most popular apps using iBeacon, which has more
than 6 million users. By checking in at stores or scanning items you earn
points which can be exchanged for gift cards or other rewards. (15)
Shopkick however, is one of many apps which could possibly be exploiting
your privacy through location services, which is explained in the fine print.
Carol Pyles via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
16. Shopkick requires you to give them your cellphone number, ZIP code, email,
and access to your phone’s microphone in order to hear what TV commercials
you are listening to. (16)
Alex Segre via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
17. In the fine print of the Shopkick it explains that it “may also share this Non-
Personally Identifiable Information with our Affiliated Parters.” However, who
are these partners, and what exactly is being shared, is unclear. (17)
Jean-Paul Leconte via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
18. What if these kind of apps recorded how often you went into a liquor store,
marijuana dispensary, or your local tobacco shop and sent it to insurance
companies? This could make you more expensive to insure, just by misusing
iBeacon location services. (18)
Pictures of Money via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
19. There are obvious advantages of location services and iBeacons,
however there are also clearly privacy issues that are possible,
so like any new technology a good balance must be achieved in
order for it to reach its full potential.
Bruno Vanelli via Flickr Creative Commons Attribution License
20. Location services, iBeacons and geosocial networking are only
scratching the surface of what is possible.
Location services in smartphones have huge economic potential, as
well as the potential to violate the users privacy, and only the future
will tell what new apps and services will utilize location services.
