This is my preview to my final project for JPN 369. Hopefully it will peak your interest in reading my analysis of yakuza through the context of westernization and change within Japan.

“Hello everybody. My name is Otomo and
I’ve been committing crimes with my
yakuza brothers for many years now. Life
has been good, I follow orders and do my
best to uphold my gang’s reputation while
avoiding unnecessary harm to people who
don’t deserve it. As a yakuza, I’m useless
to mainstream society, so I justify my
actions through acts of loyalty to the people
who have my back. I try to learn from our
founding principles of giri-ninjo, like the
samurai. But as of late, some of my fellow
outcast’s behavior has been very troubling.
I can’t help but think they’re straying from
what makes us us. This is a sad time for
classic guys like me who live for familial
success and brotherly loyalty. Sorry, I don’t
mean to ramble, it just really gets my goat. I
should probably see a therapist but I’m
confident I can work through these issues
constructively on my own.”

You better watch out Ishihara
#YouChangedMan #MoreThanaPinky
Unfortunately, Ishiharasan is very stressed
with a schedule chalk-full of meetings
behind closed doors, counting large
amounts of money with a cool look on his
face, and yelling at his elders for not
knowing how to use the internet. This
reporter was shocked when, right before
our interview was supposed to begin,
Ishihara punched officer Kataoka, just for
mentioning his former boss, Otomosan.
Those two must have an interesting
relationship, full of conflict analogous to the
overarching issues at hand.

This reporter decided to leave the hysterical
Ishihara after his undisciplined and
inappropriate outburst and instead follow up
with the Officer Kataoka. - “Yeah, I thought
he might hit me or something but I just
really love messing with his head. Actually,
it’s part of my job to get all up in yakuza
business and try to take them down through
less confrontational means. You see, since
they’re so engrained in the political and
economic infrastructure of Japan, I need to
be smart and make sure I can influence the
right yakuza at the right times to do the
right thing. Unfortunately, this often results
in dead yakuza, but so long as I can keep
turning these brothers against each other,
collect their check at the end of the day,
and keep the public out of harm’s way, I
know I’m doing a good job.
I hate that guy. I feel like my bros always
end up dead when I see him around…
