1. The Pluralism Hypothesis: Does Polytheism Equate to Pluralism? by B'Aylana Morgan for Contemporary Global Paganisms CT591.Z Fall 2009
2. The Pluralism Hypothesis The Pagan scholarly community often assumes that polytheism equates to pluralism. This idea has been advanced by well respected authors such as Margot Adler and Michael York. Pluralism has different layers of meaning: The condition of being multiple, or plural The a condition in which numerous distinct ethnic, religious, or cultural groups are present and tolerated within a society," and "the belief that such a condition is desirable or socially beneficial.” Inclusive Pluralism – interaction with mutual respect and understanding
3. Pluralism in Wicca and Ridnovir Wicca Ridnovir Demonstrates essential pluralism through the diversity of Wiccan traditions Demonstrates expanded pluralism through tenets which declare the validity of all religious paths Demonstrates inclusive pluralism through several groups’ interfaith activities Demonstrates essential pluralism through the diversity of Ridnovir traditions Demonstrates expanded pluralism through tenants which declare the validity of all religious paths within their homelands Demonstrates inclusive pluralism in that it participates in World Congress of Ethnic Religions
4. Complexities of Pluralism in Ridnovir Diversity within the ethnosphere is ideal. But diversity within the ethnoi is not. Much of Ridnovir literature is overtly anti-Semitic and anti-Christian
5. Advantages and Disadvantages For the Wicca and Ridnovir perspectives Wicca Ridnovir Advantage: Wicca accommodates diversity well within an increasingly diverse religious environment. Disadvantage : Cultural Appropriation! Sometimes the inclusiveness of Wiccan borders cause friction with indigenous communities. Advantage: Redresses the harm done to Ukrainian national identity under foreign occupation. Disadvantage: Unable to partake in the benefits of interfaith partnerships. Anti-Semitic and Anti-Christian attitudes decrease sympathy for their cause.
6. Conclusion Polytheism is shown to equate with pluralism only on its most basic definition. Polytheism does not equate with inclusive pluralism. Polytheists do not implicitly share values. This challenges the “pluralism hypothesis” and the American Pagan’s notion of what a contemporary Pagan is.

The Pagan scholarly community often assumes that polytheism equates to pluralism. This idea has been advanced by well respected authors such as Margot Adler and Michael York. However, what do these scholars meaning by pluralism? Pluralism is seen to have several meanings from simple to complex. The Farlex Free Dictionary lists the first two definitions seen on the screen. However, in the United States, pluralism has taken on additional connotations as interaction with mutual respect and understanding as opposed to simple tolerance. I call this “inclusive pluralism.”
I have examined pluralism within Wicca and Ridnovir to test the pluralism hypothesis and have found that both religious traditions exhibit pluralism on a few different levels. Wicca and Ridnovir are shown to be pluralistic at the most basic level, the state of being multiple or plural, through the existence of many threads within the traditions. In both religions these threads cooperate together and there is considerable cross-over between groups. A solitary Wiccan who worships Isis may sometimes join a Gardnerian coven for certain holidays. Likewise, members of the Triitsiacommunity may join members of the Pravoslavia community to celebrate feast days.Wicca and Ridnovir are shown to be pluralistic in certain tenets of religious beliefs which declare the validity of all religious paths. Granted, in Ridnovir, there are exceptions, but we’ll look to those later. Both religions are involved in interfaith activities which demonstrate inclusive pluralism.
