1. Motivation
A flea and a fly in a flue
were imprisoned. So what could they do?
Said the fly, "Let us flee."
Said the flea, "Let us fly."
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.
2. Presentation
Study the following pairs of sentences.
A. 1. The girl asks, “Is there a fire?”
2. The girl asks if there is a fire.
B. 1. The boy says, “There is no fire.”
2. The boy says that there is no fire.
C. 1. The girl tells the boy, “Stay here.”
2. The girl tells the boy to stay here.
D. 1. “Who is throwing us out?” the girl asks.
2. The girl asks who is throwing them out.
3. Discussion
a. What changes happened for each set of sentences?
b. How about if the verb in the introductory part is in the past tense, what will
be your verb form?
c. How will you describe sentences in the direct speech?
d. How will you describe sentences in the indirect speech?

Direct speech gives the exact words of the speaker. On the other hand, an
indirect speech gives the words of the speaker as reported by another
person.

Study the following pictures and tell to the class what the person in each picture
says.
a) “I can’t practice today.”
b) The farmer said politely, “We eat to live, but we don’t live to eat.”
c) “Life is a mixture of sunshine and rain.”
d) “Prayer is good, but prayer with good deeds is better.”
e) “A good friend is he who speaks well of us behind our back.”
