Overview EEE
RUET
Katakhali power plant is a peaking power plant in Bangladesh.
The production capacity is 50 MW.
This is basically diesel engine based power plant. No turbine. Engine itself acts as
prime mover.
Have 6 units each of the engine capacity is 8.7 MW. If we are summing of all the
engines capacity, it will be 52.2 MW.
Production of Each Unit: 7.8 MW
Quick starting time: about 30 minutes
Generation Voltage: 11 KV
Fuel source: diesel and furnace oil.
Diesel is called LFO(low fuel oil) and furnace is called HFO (heavy fuel oil).
Initially started with diesel.
Then entire operation is continued with furnace oil.
Change-over valve do the function of fuel change-over.

Furnace oil: Raw oil, thick specially during winter. Need
to be heated. Auxiliary boiler uses the heat of exhaust
gas (500℃) to heat HFO. Steam tube from boiler passes
through the oil tank to heat the furnace oil.
The average difference in furnace fuel and diesel fuel
price is about 30-40%. Diesel oil is more expensive
mainly because of the wider field of application.

Engine
The MAN engine 18V32/40 is a four-stroke, medium-
speed diesel engine, turbocharged and charge air-
cooled.
V-shaped engine. 18 cylinders on two sides (9 cylinders
on each side).
The engine is prepared for operation on heavy fuel oil.

Chimney: A chimney is a structure which provides
ventilation for hot flue gases or smoke from a boiler to
outside atmosphere. In Katakhali the chimney height was
50 m. So, less environmental heating issue near the
ground.

Chemical Dosing: In this room the water is treated by dosing
Ammonia and Phosphate to prevent boiler corrosion.
Engine Cooling and Warm-Up: The engine is water cooled.
Before starting the engine, it is warm up to prevent thermal
shock, by circulating lubrication oil. Lubrication oil
temperature should be minimum 50℃.

HFO Storage (50 lakh liter each)
Total 1 crore liter oil can be stored

(10 lakh liter)
Oil Requirement: If the plant runs for 10
hours in a day at full load the HFO required
is 120000 liter.
Oil Storage: This huge quantity of furnace oil
need to be stored in a large storage. The oil
then supplied to the day tank, after
purification in the oil purification unit,
which is required daily or for a short
interval. Also there are storage for diesel
and lubricating oil. There are totally nine
storage tanks in this power plant. Two of
them are primary storage tank and seven of
them are secondary storage tank.

Separator: On the way from storage tank
the HFO is passed through the separator
to separate moisture and suspended
impurities from oil. Then the oil is
delivered to the day tank.
The pumping of oil from storage tank to
day tank is done by oil pump.
No purification needed for diesel.
Compressed Air System: In this system, there are arrangement
for both instrument air and starting air.
Air is compressed
Moisture level in air is monitored
Anti moisture arrangement removes moisture, make it dry and
feed to engine.

 The control room controls the
power plant digitally.
 The power plant can also be
controlled manually.
 The control room of the relays,
circuit breaker and the generation
condition of the power plant is
monitored by the control room all
time.
 In this power plant, the control
room updates their generating
voltage every 15 minutes.

Barapukuria Power Station is located near Durgapur, Dinajpur, Bangladesh.
It is the 1st coal-fired power plant in Bangladesh founded in 2006 and it is operated by the Bangladesh Power
Development Board (BPDB).

Location: Phulbari and Parbatipur Upazilas, Dinajpur district, Rangpur Division, Bangladesh
Capacity: 525 MW with 3 Units ( 2 x 125 and 275)
Coal Type: Bituminous Coal (Unpurified)
Finance: 224 million US$ in debt from ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China); 106.52 million
US$ in equity from the Government of Bangladesh.

Brief specification of Barapukuriya Power plant

In the early stage two units with a capacity of 125 MW were built. Back then total capacity was 250
MW.
Later in 2018 3rd unit was built with a capacity of 275 MW.
Now it has a total 525 MW capacity.
When we visited the power station, unit two was shut down for some reason. Only unit one and
three were running.

Inlet Guide Vane:
Inlet Guide Vanes (IGVs) deliver air to the inlet of the gas turbine's axial compressor
and regulates the airflow.
Adjustable inlet guide vanes can change angle from 34° to 87° according to the
requirement of generation.
Compressor:
 Takes in air from outside of the turbine and increases its
pressure.
The Axial flow compressor consists of Compressor Rotor and
Enclosing Casing.
Within the compressor casing there are 17 stages of rotor and airfoil
shaped
blades.

Combustion Chamber:
The combustion system is a reverse-flow type with 14 combustion chambers arranged around the periphery of the compressor
discharge casing.

Turbine:
The MS9001E gas turbine has three-stage turbine-rotor where energy, in the form of high
temperature pressurized gas produced by the compressor & combustion sections,
is converted in to mechanical energy. Turbine rotates at 3000 rpm.
Main parts of turbine are:
• Turbine rotor which consists of two wheel shafts, three
Stages turbine wheel with buckets & two turbine spacers
• Turbine stator - consists of turbine shell and
exhaust frame.

Lubrication Oil System:
Common forced-feed lubrication type system. Lubricating fluid is
circulated to the three main turbine bearings, generator

Starting System:
starting mean is an induction motor operating through a torque converter
coupled to the accessory gear.

 supplied with both a natural gas & a liquid fuel (distillate) system.

This is the generator and exciter compartment inside which there is an exciter to supply direct current to
the rotor field winding. The exciter is mounted on the same shaft of the generator.

This is the control room of the power plant. From here we can control the plant automatically. There is
generator and turbine control panel and there is also automatic voltage regulator to control the
excitation.

3 single phase transformers are used as a three phase transformer for both the units. The transformer
of unit-2 has extra fans for cooling system. There are following types of transformer protection- 1. over
current, 2. Earth Fault, 3. Differential protection, 4. Buchholz Relay. We observed the buchholz relay
external to the transformer for the protection of transformers.

There are two buses in the substation and 8 bay. In each bay there is 3 conductors. In each bay there is 4

  • 11. Overview EEE RUET Katakhali power plant is a peaking power plant in Bangladesh. The production capacity is 50 MW. This is basically diesel engine based power plant. No turbine. Engine itself acts as prime mover. Have 6 units each of the engine capacity is 8.7 MW. If we are summing of all the engines capacity, it will be 52.2 MW. Production of Each Unit: 7.8 MW Quick starting time: about 30 minutes Generation Voltage: 11 KV Fuel source: diesel and furnace oil. Diesel is called LFO(low fuel oil) and furnace is called HFO (heavy fuel oil). Initially started with diesel. Then entire operation is continued with furnace oil. Change-over valve do the function of fuel change-over. 2/4/2023 11

Steam tube from boiler passes through the oil tank to heat the furnace oil. The average difference in furnace fuel and diesel fuel price is about 30-40%. Diesel oil is more expensive mainly because of the wider field of application. In Katakhali the chimney height was 50 m. So, less environmental heating issue near the ground. Engine Cooling and Warm-Up: The engine is water cooled. Before starting the engine, it is warm up to prevent thermal shock, by circulating lubrication oil. Lubrication oil temperature should be minimum 50℃. Air Sucker: Removes moisture and dust particle from air. EEE RUET HFO Storage (50 lakh liter each) Total 1 crore liter oil can be stored Day Tank (10 lakh liter) Oil Requirement: If the plant runs for 10 hours in a day at full load the HFO required is 120000 liter. Oil Storage: This huge quantity of furnace oil need to be stored in a large storage. The oil then supplied to the day tank, after purification in the oil purification unit, which is required daily or for a short interval. Also there are storage for diesel and lubricating oil. There are totally nine storage tanks in this power plant. Two of them are primary storage tank and seven of them are secondary storage tank. 2/4/2023 15
  • 16. EEE RUET Compressed Air System Separator Oil Pump Separator: On the way from storage tank the HFO is passed through the separator to separate moisture and suspended impurities from oil. Then the oil is delivered to the day tank. The pumping of oil from storage tank to day tank is done by oil pump. No purification needed for diesel. Control Room EEE RUET  The control room controls the power plant digitally.  The power plant can also be controlled manually.  The control room of the relays, circuit breaker and the generation condition of the power plant is monitored by the control room all time.  In this power plant, the control room updates their generating voltage every 15 minutes. 2/4/2023 22

  • 45. EEE RUET Transformers Unit-1 Unit-2 3 single phase transformers are used as a three phase transformer for both the units. The transformer of unit-2 has extra fans for cooling system. There are following types of transformer protection- 1. over current, 2. Earth Fault, 3. Differential protection, 4. Buchholz Relay. We observed the buchholz relay external to the transformer for the protection of transformers.
