Comfort?
For years breeding organizations focused their
research on improvement of the genetic level of
protein and milk while animal nutrition companies
focused on optimizing nutrition. Dairy producers
were taught to consider these aspects and there
focus was on reaching the highest production goals.
While proper nutrition and genetics are very
important, they are only two of the numerous
factors necessary for productive animal husbandry.

The Turkish Joint venture was agreed in 2007 and created in January 2008. The office is
conveniently located in Kemalpasha (Izmir), next to the demonstration farm with 250 cows.
The Turkish dairy market is developing well and Agriprom Turkey has rapidly become the market

respect to resting time in the stalls, no difference can be
demonstrated. These systems however require significantly
more attention and labor. Some of the costs are still difficult to
estimate, but keeping in mind that bedding materials like straw
and sawdust are becoming much more expensive.

friendly, does not seem to meet the environmental
requirements due to the instability of the composting process
under Dutch circumstances.

22. How thick must a cow
mattress be?
The filling must be thick enough to assure long-term
comfort, softness and imprint of approximately 20 mm.
The thicker and softer the mattress is the larger the
chance of permanent deforming. Thicker is not a measure
for comfort this is shown by the DLG research. Softer has
proven more permanent deforming in time.
100% rubber mats on the other hand do not supply the
same comfort as rubber/latex mattresses do, this has
been shown by the percentage of complaints regarding
feet and legs. Graph 3 supplies information from DLG
research done at farm level with the users of the different
mats and mattresses. Also in this graph Agriprom is the
lead scorer. (Table 1)
Individual mats or rolls
Individual mats must be heavier than rolls in order to be
stable. Normally they are also much thicker, which is not
necessary for the comfort of the animals, but does
increase the permanent deforming factor. However
individual mats have the tendency to stretch and must
often be installed a few centimeters apart. This makes it
almost inevitable for manure and sawdust to buildup in
the openings between the mats.
