Afghan Refugee Tutoring (Full Season: 2014-2015)
Dates: Aug 28, 2014 to Mar 19, 2015
Activity Description: This is my second year undertaking this wonderful service opportunity to
contribute the community in a meaningful and positive manner. Afghan
Refugee Tutoring provides a wonderful platform for students like me to
interact and spend some quality time with less "underprivileged" kids, who
have come from a difficult background. We go to the Afghan tutoring school
located in Cheras, and play recreational games and offer fun learning activities
in departments such English, math, and even computer to around 15-30
children. But, on some occasions, it is the Afghan kids who come here at the
school (ISKL) and we offer a wide range of activities that they participate in.
Since this is my second year, my goal is to continue building the bond and
"connection" that I have created with the kids. I greatly hope to have great
experiences by helping them learn new skills, not only academically but also
socially and physically by for instance playing games that they enjoy as a
group. Basically, I want to continue my good work of the first and second
seasons and want to see happy smiles on the faces of these kids.

This is Sahil's second year with the Afghan Refugee
Tutoring service club. As he has stated in his reflection, this
year was very different than last year's service program.
With that said, Sahil has always been an active participant
within the club. He has great ideas and is eager to share
them with the group. Sahil has made lasting relationships
with the students of Hilla through his tender style and
willingness to get involved with whatever is planned. This is
evident when Sahil gets off the bus because the student's
tend to flock to him. Sahil has brought good energy, ideas
and experience to the club.

The second year of Afghan Refugee Tutoring has been rather ambivalent. This year was very much different from my previous
experience and there were many setbacks along the way. The main reason for this was that the "calendar" for both the Afghan
Refugee kids and the ISKL's Afghan Refugee service team didn't correspond with each other. Hence, there were many occasions
where we didn't interact with the kids due to the conflict in schedule. Hence, many weeks went "wasted" and there was no activity
done. However, during these weeks the team still met and discussed on the future plans involving what activities should be
conducted with the kids when there was an opportunity to meet them. On the contrary, a major positive in this year was that our
service team went to few sessions of Mrs. Cynthia Crowder, who taught us how to develop skills to teach/train the Afghan Refugee
kids to communicate and interact in English. Mrs. Crowder provided us with specific lesson plans involving writing, reading, listening
and speaking in English. She thoroughly explained how we should initiate our lesson plans to make it effective for the kids. For
instance, for the reading activity: we should first read the book slowly with the kids and help the pronounce words with specific
expression and accent. But, if there are kids who are non-speakers then we should instead start with the basics of the alphabet and
help them pronounce "aa aye, bb bee, cc see." This will help them give a solid foundation so that they can learn the English language
with proficiency. We have tried these lesson plans with the Afghan kids and they really seemed to enjoy them. Apart from simply
playing recreational games, I feel it was important to inculcate some of these fundamental lesson plans that will greatly benefit these
kids. Personally speaking, I am satisfied with my efforts during this year. Although there have been some sessions that I have missed
due to a substantial amount of workload in my final year of the IB program. I feel that I contributed diligently and effectively to make
sure that the kids could enjoy a few moments of their life. My interactions with them were great and it was always a pleasure to see
them smiling, not only when they were playing games but always when they were being introduced to new learning concepts. The
kids definitely loved to play football, and I personally emphasized to play the game every day even for a short time. The aim of this
service program was (and is) to make the kids enjoy and to see them smiling. As a group, I feel we managed to achieve our initially
planned goals of providing great assistance to the school and to help the kids in any way possible. We had always systematically
planned our activities before visiting the school kids and had effectively discussed on the things that could be improved in every visit.
In this 2 years of participating in this unique service opportunity, I have truly gained a great insight into the lives of such refugees
kids. In fact, we can learn so much from them! There is not one moment where they are dull or fussy about something. They strive to
participate in any activities given to them and want to enjoy what they do. This is evident from their smiles which never fades. I
strongly believe that if the following service program can continue supporting these kids, then they will have a bright future ahead of
them. These refugee kids gain so much of new knowledge by simply spending time with us.
This was definitely a rewarding experience and the years participating in the Afghan Refugee Tutoring will definitely not be forgotten.

CHALLENGE COLLABORATION COMMITMENT ETHICS GLOBAL VALUE NEW SKILLS
The first season of Afgan Refugee Tutoring was a great success personally. It was my first occasion undertaking a service program at
ISKL and it was indeed a rewarding one. Interacting with less fortunate kids of “Great Hilla,” a school which helps provide a new life
to them, by the means of playing simple and amusing games with them and also teaching them various concepts in basic subjects
of English, math and even the computer was a great experience. I feel that I contributed diligently and effectively to make sure that
the kids could enjoy a few moments of their life. My interactions with them were great and it was always a pleasure to see them
smiling, not only when they were playing games but always when they were being introduced to new learning concepts. I can vividly
remember on how one kid while being taught new concepts on computers evidently had a difficult time and was frustrated.
However, the beauty in that frustration lied a smile and the eagerness to learn when the opportunity has been provided. This is
definitely what I will take from this season of Afghan Refugee Tutoring. Kids who were aged only about 11-13 years had a great
willingness to learn about new concepts and seemed to thoroughly enjoy every moment of learning. As a group, I feel we managed
to achieve our initially planned goals of providing great assistance to the school and to help the kids in any way possible. We had
always systematically planned our activities before visiting the school kids and had effectively discussed on the things that could be
improved in every visit. This was definitely a great experience and is something that I will definitely love to continue in the upcoming
seasons.

This was my second season of Afghan Refugee Tutoring and just like the first season it was a memorable experience. Since I knew
about what specific things had to be done, my role this semester was important. Firstly, I helped those new to this service program
and helped them "settle" and interact well with the kids. So, essentially I had to play a "leader's" role and I feel I did a good job in this
role. Furthermore, my interacting with the kids of “Great Hilla,” a school which helps provide a new life to them, improved as well. I
was more involved and attempted to participate/help in every activity that we had designed for them. These include of playing simple
and amusing games with them and also teaching them various concepts in basic subjects of English, math and even the computer. I
feel that I contributed diligently and effectively to make sure that the kids could enjoy a few moments of their life. My interactions with

This is why playing sports especially football, which the kids dearly enjoy, was more emphasized than to teach them lessons about
maths or other academic subjects. Moreover, in this session, there were kids who were generally aged from 8-11 years and seeing
them compete in sports with each other was an interesting observation. Being at a such a tender age, they not only wanted to have
fun, but wanted to win and play seriously was definitely my highlight of this second season. As a group, I feel we managed to

knowledge of cooking some variety of food and to be motivated throughout

AWARENESS CHALLENGE COLLABORATION COMMITMENT INITIATIVE NEW SKILLS
Opting to learn cooking with the help of my mom was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made during the holidays. First
of all, quality and productive time was spent while cooking in the kitchen! It was indeed my very first attempt to cook basically
anything and I grasped a lot of knowledge from these sessions. Obviously, every lesson was a challenge, especially in the beginning.
I had actually never even lit the stove, before! Hence, the surroundings were totally different from that I am usually accustomed to.
The first thing I learnt was to make tea. This was actually not a hard task to learn and gave me confidence that I can indeed learn to
cook more difficult things. By continuously making tea during the lessons, I became proficient at this and it was the first thing I
served to my family. They seemed to love the tea I made and my mom especially encouraged me to keep on leaning more and told
me to not become complacent as this is in fact an extremely easy task. However, I was exuberant as I finally got “grip of things” and
always wanted to learn more. The first dish that I learnt to make was “roti and dal.” Roti is basically an Indian form of bread and dal is
simply pulses that are commonly used to assist roti. I learnt about many different forms of “dals” and how they follow almost the
same procedure to make. It was fun learning to make rotis, but at times especially in the beginning it was indeed frustrating to
compose the right size of them. It was actually amazing observing my mother making rotis not only of the right size, but also how
swiftly they were made! She truly has great experience in making them and I had never appreciated her work in the kitchen. I had in
fact always presumed that cooking was an easy task – but after these lessons it sure isn’t!
As this was a festive break, my family has a long tradition of celebrating the occasion with other close friends in a big feast. My
mother has always been in-charge of making the event possible and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to help her in
cooking! The first thing we started to make was the sweets and the snacks. It was fascinating learning how to make the famous
“samosas” from starting and I was proud of helping make around 70 of those with my mother. I previously had no clue on how
samosas were made and only focused on eating them. But, now that I have actually made several of them, I feel delighted and the
food you cook by your own hands tastes more delicious! I assisted and at the same time learned how to make several of the most

It was surprising to observe Sahil develop cooking skills in
such a short space of time. He was very sincere during the
winter holidays and he really put a great shift in his first ever
cooking lessons. I, as a mother, who has professionally
taught others cooking in the past, tried to subsequently
make every cooking class a new albeit enjoyable challenge
for Sahil. He worked diligently and greatly assisted me in
the making of traditional Indian dishes for a big gathering. I
feel that this experience will truly benefit Sahil in the long
run, especially in his university days... I am proud of Sahil's
efforts and it was great to see his commitment in cooking!

GAP 2013 - Sri Lanka
Dates: Sep 06, 2013 to Nov 07, 2013
Activity Description: The GAP trip challenged students to develop human connections with the
outside world never experienced before and to showcase leadership qualities
through various activities of great exploration and adventure. The one week
trip also enables the students to pursue cultural understanding and
appreciation through interaction with the local community and traditions.
Moreover, the trip allowed the students to contribute meaningfully by
successfully performing the obligations of community service to not only help
others who require it, but also to have a far-reaching and positive impact for
our planet and people. The trip to Colombo, Sri Lanka, helped me personally
to be firstly aware of the beautiful country that I had never previously visited
and introduced me to its enriching cultural and traditional values; provided a
medium through which I could connect with nature by spending more quality
cherished Indian dishes such as Butter chicken, Indian curry, and much more. It was even more compelling when people enjoyed our
food and I am proud to have contributed to making the “get together” a success!
It was great fun learning how to make food and this will indeed be important when I will be in college where cooking skills are
especially necessary and an advantage!

time “outside” exploring than to be sitting usually at home; and challenged me
to develop leadership skills and many other life skills such as of effectively
collaborating with peers and teachers. My CAS Project was of providing
country background and other vital information to my trip members before we
actually started our adventure. So, before the trip I focused primarily on
researching about the cultural and traditional aspect of the country and how
we as foreigners could merge “into their lives” effectively. I found out more
information on the sites we were heading towards such as the famous
“Dambulla Cave Temple” and highlighted how important this is culturally to the
people of Sri Lanka. I also introduced some basic tamil words, which is the
most commonly spoken language in the country. The presentation that I
presented has been included in Managebac. During the trip, I was also a
leader for the entire day. Basically, my job was not only to instruct my group
members about the day’s plan, but also to actually ensure that all the plans
organized for the day actually takes place. For instance, as on the agenda we
had to visit the local school, but I had to before call the school and talk to the
principle/headmaster to aware them that we have arrived and would want to
interact with their kids for a short while. Moreover, I had to make sure that all
the 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, and diner) were available and under the budget
set by the instructors. Hence, I had to manage the spending accordingly and
at the same time the food had to satisfy the needs of everyone. I had to also
think of what type of food to order as the group consisted of both vegetarians
and non-vegetarians. And, after the trip, I was also the one to lead the GAP
Night Celebration for our trip. I gave a two-minute speech covering everyone’s
experience and how the trip was extremely beneficial and rewarding for every
single individual. The transcript of the speech that I gave has also been
included in Managebac. I was also involved in the GAP Food Packaging. The
following activity required us to package basic food necessities that included
grains, oats, vegetables, and rice that is basically extremely easy to cook. This
is for the less fortunate people, which will be visited in our respective GAP
destinations. The food contains all of the mentioned meals (like rice,
vegetables etc.) packaged in a single bag. In the activity, we were able to
package a total of 20,000 bags! My goal along with that of my group in the
activity was to try to finish as much bags/packages as possible. This was
basically so that more food would be provided for the less fortunate. We also
focused on not wasting the food, while we were packaging. We understood
the importance of our contribution to the daily lives of countless.

The GAP trip to Sri Lanka was arguably one of the best moments and a great highlight of my high school adventure. The trip was a
memorable one and the level of amusement garnered throughout the whole week was enriching. What made the trip more
remarkable was the bond that each individual had amongst the whole group. Being in the GAP trip to Langkawi the previous year
and the GAP trip to Sri Lanka in this year was a completely different experience. I firmly believe that the trip to Sri Lanka was a much
more captivating extravaganza and one of the main reasons is how well I had interacted with my group members. In fact, before the
visit to Sri Lanka, I had barely known most of them; let alone interacted with them for even 10 seconds! But, during the trip I
personally had the opportunity to spend time with people; I would have probably never interacted before. The most notable part of
the trip would definitely be the long bus drives. It took more than 3 hours to reach our destinations each time we travelled on the bus.
But, this is actually where everyone bonded so well with each other. Three hours of bus ride seemed to be a five minute walk,
because of the amount of entertainment we had. Listening and singing along with the classical Boney M. music was hilarious. The
amounts of riddles that we solved were uncountable with at least 7-8 riddles solved in a day. After the trip, it actually felt as if we
knew the answers to every riddle out there. Hence, sharing a close bond with each other helped us to work collaboratively to not only
achieve sheer amusement, but also on our service project. Apart from just having a recreational time, we spent two days on our
community service. We had contributed money for a big room or a hall to be built in a local school in Colombo. We didn’t physically
support the construction of this room, as initially expected; but interacted with the school kids. We played several games with them,
most notably 3 mini-cricket matches, which I was greatly looking forward to before the trip. It was entertaining to play the sport after
such a long time with kids who actually knew how to play cricket and have passion for it. I was also involved in teaching the younger
kids some basic concepts such as that of numbers, alphabets etc. It was actually pretty surprising to observe the amount of
knowledge these kids, who were probably between 7-9 years, had already possessed. Undoubtedly, I will never forget the
remarkable reception that the school offered us. It was fabulous to experience their culture and traditional dance forms. It is fair to
say that we were treated like kings and queens when we arrived there. Of course, this is what makes GAP so special. It allows us to
assist those who require help and the end results are rewarding. Seeing the glittering smiles on the faces of the local people was truly
special.
Visiting the famous “Dambulla Cave Temple” was also a great cultural experience for me. It was overwhelming to observe the
statues in the temple, because of how carefully it was crafted, and the intricate designs that contained beautiful colors and patterns.
Rafting was another cherished activity that I did. The rapids were extremely strong and it was more than an adventure to deal with
the obstacles along the way. In fact, this was the first time that I had rafted and by not being a confident swimmer, this was indeed a
challenge. However, it is not to say that the experience of rafting was one to greatly savor.

Activity Description: Personal Fitness encourages students to be more fitter, and motivates them to

AWARENESS CHALLENGE COLLABORATION COMMITMENT INITIATIVE NEW SKILLS
Personal Fitness encourages students to be fitter, and motivates them to be conscious about the importance of health. In this
course, I developed my own fitness program and learnt the important steps in leading a fit and healthy life. The experiences I had in
these wonderful fitness sessions are highlighted below.
The purpose of electing Personal Fitness as a subject was mainly due to the fact that I had the incentive of wanting to
improve my physical fitness. Before joining this course, my fitness level was not the one which I personally desired. At that time, my
fitness status could have been described as “neutral,” which was basically neither too bad, nor awesome. This is further accentuated
by the fact that I have not undertook any physical sport activity offered at ISKL during my two year stay at the school. However, it is
not as if I am not a “fan” of physical sports; in fact I greatly love outdoor sports in particular football. In addition, I do play football
(but not competitive) over the weekend with my peers and thoroughly enjoy it. I won’t consider my fitness level before the course to
be pathetic or abysmal, but it was definitely not at that level which would enable me to regularly participate and perform at the
highest level of physical sports. For instance, during football games I severely lacked the stamina and the endurance to continue
playing for a sufficient period of time without taking a break. Moreover, I was a bit overweight (by around 10 kgs) at my age. In short, I
had never really worked on improving my fitness, although I greatly desired to be a fit person. Obviously, I pursued this course of
Personal Fitness with the sole purpose of improving my fitness and so that it enables me to focus on my fitness level more seriously.
I definitely required adequate time to work on my fitness, as I am also pursuing the IB Diploma Program, which obviously makes life
difficult and offers less “free” time to be spent.
During the course of Fitness Personal, not only has my fitness improved, but it has also provided me with great knowledge
on the basics of maintaining a fit life. For instance, I have learnt on the importance of creating a well-planned fitness program.
Previously, it was common for me to randomly find time to work out in the gym without a clear idea of what I had to achieve. The first
most pivotal aspect of being fit is to fully understand the purpose of why you actually want to be fit. Hence, it is vital to first formulate
a reasonable fitness goal and set a time frame to when it should be achieved. After clearly identifying the fitness goal, a fitness
program that accords with the respective goal has to be formed. While creating a fitness program, I learnt that it is significant to
consider the principles of training in order to achieve the maximum output. I also learnt the importance of stretching and why it
should be incorporated in a fitness program. People working out usually fail to notice the significance that stretching has. Different
types of stretching were discussed so that our fitness programs could be improved further. These include (i) Ballistic stretching, (ii)
Dynamic stretching, (iii) Active Stretching, (iv) Passive Stretching and (v) Static Stretching. There was much more learnt about the
different types of muscles present and how certain workouts are effective for specific muscular parts of the body. It was important to
understand how significant it is to plan what specific workout has to be done. It simply cannot be anything random and must be
appropriate to an individual’s fitness goal and program.
After undertaking this course, my fitness has definitely improved. The aspects of fitness that have improved the most would
be speed and endurance. My personal fitness goal was (and is) to decrease weight and the purpose behind this ambition is to be
able to build more stamina and endurance that is required for professional football. After having identified my goal and having
worked out using my specific fitness program for sufficient fitness sessions, I have observed improvements in my speed and
endurance aspects of my fitness. Before having worked out using our fitness programs, we did a fitness test known as the “Pacer
Test” and I remember completing only 54 rounds. But, after the same Pacer Test was conducted after working out using our fitness

programs, I observed drastic improvements in the result. I, now, completed 66 rounds of the Pacer Test and remember being sick on
that day, as well! Therefore, I could have easily done a few more if I was in my regular healthy state. This goes to show on the
massive impact that this Personal Fitness course had on me. I have also observed on the improvements in my endurance and speed
during football games. I have become faster and my endurance and stamina required to play the game has increased, as well! I can
carry on playing the sport for a longer time period without getting tired, as in the case before.
However, the aspect of fitness that would still need improvement would be muscular endurance. In order to achieve this, I
would need to reconsider my current fitness goal which only focuses on improving aspects of fitness such as endurance and speed
for football. Likewise, I would need to modify my fitness program which would have to incorporate more weight training and circuit
training. There has to be careful but steady progression in order to improve muscle adaptation as well as improve soft tissue
strength. And, also more focus would have to be on the amount of sets, reps and weights done per session and how it can steadily
be increased.
My future goals would be to continue to lose weight and to keep my progress of improving endurance and speed for physical
sports such as football. I would also like to consider adding improvements in my muscular strength and endurance, so that I form a
better physical body shape/figure. Obviously, in order to continue my progress I would need to abide by my fitness program and
make necessary changes whenever possible. Life is definitely going to be hectic for me as graduation from high school is near and
life in university about to commence. It is essential to not forget about my fitness regime, as it forms a crucial aspect of one’s
personal well-being.
In the upcoming future, I aspire to be in a fitness level that I can be proud of. I desire to have a better physical figure and want to
be in a healthy shape. There is undoubtedly going to be a huge amount of stress in my life and I would require myself to be healthy in
all those circumstances to avoid depression or other diseases that could be a result of a lack of fitness. In order to actually achieve
this it is obvious that I must continue working on my fitness for a maximum period of time possible in a week. I would need to
continue motivating myself by making changes in the specific fitness goals or by wanting to desperately achieve something.
Therefore, I would need to continue working hard and never give up striving for a fitter lifestyle.
Personal Fitness has been a pleasurable and a more than worthwhile course for me. I have seen improvements in my fitness due to
the opportunities provided in this class.

Please write an additional reflection about how you have improved as an animal caretaker. You have selected 3. planned and initiated
activities, 6. issues of global importance and 7. ethical implications, but you did not really discuss them in your reflection so far. Please
be sure to evaluate the extent to which you have achieved these learning outcomes.
Since it was my very first season of SPCA, I have definitely improved as an animal caretaker. During the initial sessions, I was a bit
reluctant to go near the dogs. This was probably since, it was not a normal thing for me to interact with these dogs. Personally, I
don't own pets, but do wish to in the near future. As time progressed, my interactions with these pets improved, and I felt more
involved with them. I was more "confident" around them and as a result I helped contribute to the organization.
By constantly appearing for meetings, I helped to contribute ideas which would help raise funds for the pets. It was important to
creatively "promote" the organization and we did so by creating posters/flyers, informing the ISKL student body though Panther
Pause and school bulletin. Through these we had aware the students of how important it is to safeguard these pets and how we
should value them. By helping to provide shelter to these homeless pets, who have suffered greatly on the streets, is of substantial
importance. The organization, SPCA, provides this shelter and it is thus enviable to support their cause for the betterment of the
society. Furthermore, these pets can be adopted for a certain period which will provide them with a family. Animal abuse is a serious
offence and that must be counteracted by supporting the organization. Little efforts such as donations must be made to help tackle
this bigger issue. In my first season of SPCA, I have become more involved in supporting this wonderful organization and have tried
to play more than my "part" in providing these pets a better life.

The first season of SPCA (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was a great and a worthwhile experience. This was the first
time that I had undertaken such a program, which promotes safeguard and assistance to the pets that unfortunately require. SPCA is
also a brilliant platform to interact with these beautiful creatures who have met with unfortunate consequences and enables
individuals like me to provide great support to the ones who have actually initiated and run the program for years. I believe that I have
wholeheartedly collaborated with others to make this program a success, so far. I have always been focused during the period when
you are interacting with the pets and also during the period of group discussions. I believe that I have actively participated in these
discussions by offering my personal views on how the pets can be benefited more by our on-going services. We can always do more
than what we are offering at the present. The first few weeks of the program went pretty smoothly, as we only had to look after the
pets and provide basic necessities that they required. I can vividly remember my reaction when I had been given the opportunity to
clean the dogs on my first day of service. I was cautious and to some extent nervous as I hadn't touched dogs for around 7-8 years
when I had my own! Nevertheless, I did help to clean the dogs along with others and after several sessions I became more confident

in my ability to interact with pets. I wouldn't stand idly and pass my time by staring at the pets, as I confess of doing during my initial
sessions. I would look to provide support anywhere needed such as feeding the pets, playing with the dogs or by even cleaning their
shelters. As time passed by, I became more willing to participate and I developed a great bond with these wonderful pets.
Obviously, we met with challenges on the road, but I believe we faced them well as a group. The major challenge was to definitely
help find shelter for the dogs, as their previous ones were being renovated. Hence, to successfully counteract the challenge we had
to effectively publicize that the pets required shelters for a certain time period and those willing to offer support can come visit us. I
contributed in making posters that were put around the school and nearby the area to aware people. It was great fun to be involved
in this whole process and it was more exciting when we successfully accomplished in finding sufficient shelter for these pets!
This was definitely a great experience and is something that I will definitely love to continue in the upcoming seasons.

The second season of SPCA (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was another memorable and worthwhile experience. From
my two seasons in the organization, I feel that I have definitely improved as an animal caretaker. I can vividly recall how during the
initial days in Season 1, I was not only cautious but also reluctant to go near the dogs. As embarrassing as it can get, I was indeed a
bit nervous to touch the dogs and felt that I felt that I would get a disease or would fall sick. As a result, I would see myself simply
strolling around offering minimal help and would simply pass my time. However, as time passed by, I definitely became more involved
and saw myself contribute more to the organization. Especially in season 2, I saw myself as one of the leaders, because of my past
experience with the organization and I was far more effective. I definitely didn't stroll around and used every minute possible to
interact with the pets and help SPCA in any way possible. I really enjoyed cleaning their shelter with water and it was sort of my duty
every time. Although, I didn't enjoy cleaning the " waste" left behind by the dogs; I still did it. I definitely felt more confident around
the pets and as a result enjoyed their " company." I believe that I have wholeheartedly collaborated with others to make this program
a success. Being a leader, I also helped other new to the organization by helping them involve more and by " settling" them with the
pets. I have always been focused during the period when you are interacting with the pets and also during the period of group
discussions. I believe that I have actively participated in these discussions by offering my personal views on how the pets can be
benefited more by our on-going services. In the second season, we helped to raise funds for SPCA and an essential part was raising
funds during the ISKL Spring Fest. I, personally, helped set up the SPCA stall/booth during the Spring Fest and contributed in
brainstorming activities/games for the visitors in order to raise funds. I also contributed in making posters that were put around the
school and nearby the area to aware people. Furthermore, just like in Season 1, we "promoted" the organization and we did so by
creating posters/flyers, informing the ISKL student body though Panther Pause and school bulletin. Through these we had aware the

Activity Description: TED is a famous organization devoted for ideas worth spreading. Likewise,
TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to
share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live
speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-
organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED
event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program,
but individual TEDx events are self-organized. On October 11th, 2014, ISKL is
hosting the school’s first ever TEDx event: TEDxISKL. The theme of the event
is “The Creative Spark” and the assigned TEDx speakers will tackle some of
humanity’s toughest questions, attempting to answer them with innovation,
enterprise and enduring optimism. Personally, I am in the technical
department/back stage of the TEDx program. After having discussed the
specific requirements required to host a TEDx event, I have been assigned a
role at the "left side of the stage" during the actual event. My role would be to
help the speakers on to the green room, where they will wait until their turn to
speak. I am also working closely with the stage crew of the ISKL theater to
check what specific dimensions of the stage are needed, etc. We meet 5-6
times a month and have an hour long discussion with our respective groups.
But days before the actual event (on October 11th, 2014) there will be more
meetings and more workload.

Wow! What a journey it has been! The TEDx event has finally been held and that too very successfully after a long duration of hard
work, perseverance and commitment. Hosting such a massive event has been a great challenge for all of us who were involved.
Personally, by being involved in the production of this event was an achievement in itself. I have never undertook such a step as
being a part of such a renowned and prestigious event. I was a part of the technical committee who firstly reviewed the specific
requirements needed to host this event. By going to the official ted website, the members of the committee carefully checked all the
requirements for instance the specific microphones, the positioning of cameras, the specific light (back light, front light etc.) and
other technical aspects, which must be first met before hosting the event. Afterwards, we held couple of meetings regarding all of
these critical aspects with Ms. Vonic (our technical committee head), Mr. Dashel (ISKL production/stage in-charge), Mr. Vincent and

experience and apply it to the next big undertaking he
chooses -- I hope it will be the next TEDx event.

other members of the ISKL stage and technical management. We carefully discussed all these requirements and reviewed if we are
already meeting them or not. The biggest challenge was the positioning of the already present screen on the stage of the ISKL
theater. According to the rules and regulations of TEDx, the speaker must be given a sufficient amount of space to move around
while speaking. This was not possible with the placement of the screen in the ISKL stage. Moreover, according to their requirements,
there has to be sufficient back light (one behind the screen) and this was again not possible with the position of our screen. Hence,
we had to buy another screen and position it accordingly to meet all the requirements. Although, this was a challenge, it was
ultimately successful. Furthermore, we also faced other challenges regarding how we should design our stage (in the theater). After
long hours of discussions and looking at several TEDx videos and how those stages that had been designed, we came to a
conclusion to put batik designs on the outer part of the stage and to label our stage "TEDxISKL" in red and position it to the left of
the speaker. This is so that when recording the actual event, people can easily view the speaker and also essentially the sign -
TEDxISKL.
2-3 weeks before the event, the workload became heavy and we were all more focused and committed in doing our best job. We
were assigned special roles during the day of the event. Although, I was a part of the technical committee of TEDxISKL, most of us
didn't have the experience to handle the "technical" part of the show. Hence, the people who were actually experienced in these
roles of managing the stage, lighting, etc. were called. As a result, my role during the event changed to be a member of the back
stage. I was assigned a role at the "left side of the stage" during the actual event. My role was to provide the "clicker" for the
speakers before they head on to the stage for their speech. Although, this seems to be a very easy job - which it was indeed, I still
had to make sure to be careful with the clickers. It would have been an embarrassment if I had lost the clicker or if I had clicked on a
specific button then it would have caused a chaos and confusion with the technical department. So, I had to be careful and mindful
of when to provide the clicker.
Overall, this has been a beneficial experience for me as an individual. I had never been part of hosting such an important event and
that too when it is an inaugural event hosted by ISKL for the very first time. I am proud of myself and other diligent members of the
TEDx event. It was crucial to also collaborate well with other committees and make sure that everyone was on the "same page." I
personally thank all the teachers and everyone involved for hosting a truly fascinating event.

  • 1. By Activity International School of Kuala Lumpur Sahil Kumar’s CAS Reflections Afghan Refugee Tutoring (Full Season: 2014-2015) Dates: Aug 28, 2014 to Mar 19, 2015 Activity Description: This is my second year undertaking this wonderful service opportunity to contribute the community in a meaningful and positive manner. Afghan Refugee Tutoring provides a wonderful platform for students like me to interact and spend some quality time with less "underprivileged" kids, who have come from a difficult background. We go to the Afghan tutoring school located in Cheras, and play recreational games and offer fun learning activities in departments such English, math, and even computer to around 15-30 children. But, on some occasions, it is the Afghan kids who come here at the school (ISKL) and we offer a wide range of activities that they participate in. Since this is my second year, my goal is to continue building the bond and "connection" that I have created with the kids. I greatly hope to have great experiences by helping them learn new skills, not only academically but also socially and physically by for instance playing games that they enjoy as a group. Please comment on the student’s progress, effort and commitment: This is Sahil's second year with the Afghan Refugee Tutoring service club. As he has stated in his reflection, this year was very different than last year's service program. With that said, Sahil has always been an active participant within the club. He has great ideas and is eager to share them with the group. Sahil has made lasting relationships with the students of Hilla through his tender style and willingness to get involved with whatever is planned. This is evident when Sahil gets off the bus because the student's tend to flock to him. Sahil has brought good energy, ideas and experience to the club. ✓ The student has completed 1 Service hours. This activity was ✓ Completed Not Completed Joseph Tremarco Supervisor The second year of Afghan Refugee Tutoring has been rather ambivalent. This year was very much different from my previous experience and there were many setbacks along the way. The main reason for this was that the "calendar" for both the Afghan Refugee kids and the ISKL's Afghan Refugee service team didn't correspond with each other. Hence, there were many occasions where we didn't interact with the kids due to the conflict in schedule. Hence, many weeks went "wasted" and there was no activity done. However, during these weeks the team still met and discussed on the future plans involving what activities should be conducted with the kids when there was an opportunity to meet them. On the contrary, a major positive in this year was that our service team went to few sessions of Mrs. Cynthia Crowder, who taught us how to develop skills to teach/train the Afghan Refugee kids to communicate and interact in English. Mrs. Crowder provided us with specific lesson plans involving writing, reading, listening and speaking in English. She thoroughly explained how we should initiate our lesson plans to make it effective for the kids. For instance, for the reading activity: we should first read the book slowly with the kids and help the pronounce words with specific expression and accent. But, if there are kids who are non-speakers then we should instead start with the basics of the alphabet and help them pronounce "aa aye, bb bee, cc see." This will help them give a solid foundation so that they can learn the English language with proficiency. We have tried these lesson plans with the Afghan kids and they really seemed to enjoy them. Apart from simply playing recreational games, I feel it was important to inculcate some of these fundamental lesson plans that will greatly benefit these kids. Personally speaking, I am satisfied with my efforts during this year. Although there have been some sessions that I have missed due to a substantial amount of workload in my final year of the IB program. I feel that I contributed diligently and effectively to make sure that the kids could enjoy a few moments of their life. My interactions with them were great and it was always a pleasure to see them smiling, not only when they were playing games but always when they were being introduced to new learning concepts. The kids definitely loved to play football, and I personally emphasized to play the game every day even for a short time. The aim of this service program was (and is) to make the kids enjoy and to see them smiling. As a group, I feel we managed to achieve our initially planned goals of providing great assistance to the school and to help the kids in any way possible. We had always systematically planned our activities before visiting the school kids and had effectively discussed on the things that could be improved in every visit. In this 2 years of participating in this unique service opportunity, I have truly gained a great insight into the lives of such refugees kids. In fact, we can learn so much from them! There is not one moment where they are dull or fussy about something. They strive to participate in any activities given to them and want to enjoy what they do. This is evident from their smiles which never fades. I strongly believe that if the following service program can continue supporting these kids, then they will have a bright future ahead of them. These refugee kids gain so much of new knowledge by simply spending time with us. This was definitely a rewarding experience and the years participating in the Afghan Refugee Tutoring will definitely not be forgotten. It was my first occasion undertaking a service program at ISKL and it was indeed a rewarding one. Interacting with less fortunate kids of “Great Hilla,” a school which helps provide a new life to them, by the means of playing simple and amusing games with them and also teaching them various concepts in basic subjects of English, math and even the computer was a great experience. I can vividly remember on how one kid while being taught new concepts on computers evidently had a difficult time and was frustrated. However, the beauty in that frustration lied a smile and the eagerness to learn when the opportunity has been provided. This is definitely what I will take from this season of Afghan Refugee Tutoring. Kids who were aged only about 11-13 years had a great willingness to learn about new concepts and seemed to thoroughly enjoy every moment of learning. First of all, quality and productive time was spent while cooking in the kitchen! It was indeed my very first attempt to cook basically anything and I grasped a lot of knowledge from these sessions. Obviously, every lesson was a challenge, especially in the beginning. I had actually never even lit the stove, before! Hence, the surroundings were totally different from that I am usually accustomed to. The first thing I learnt was to make tea. This was actually not a hard task to learn and gave me confidence that I can indeed learn to cook more difficult things. By continuously making tea during the lessons, I became proficient at this and it was the first thing I served to my family. They seemed to love the tea I made and my mom especially encouraged me to keep on leaning more and told me to not become complacent as this is in fact an extremely easy task. However, I was exuberant as I finally got “grip of things” and always wanted to learn more. The first dish that I learnt to make was “roti and dal.” Roti is basically an Indian form of bread and dal is simply pulses that are commonly used to assist roti. I learnt about many different forms of “dals” and how they follow almost the same procedure to make. It was fun learning to make rotis, but at times especially in the beginning it was indeed frustrating to compose the right size of them. It was actually amazing observing my mother making rotis not only of the right size, but also how swiftly they were made! She truly has great experience in making them and I had never appreciated her work in the kitchen. I had in fact always presumed that cooking was an easy task – but after these lessons it sure isn’t! As this was a festive break, my family has a long tradition of celebrating the occasion with other close friends in a big feast. My mother has always been in-charge of making the event possible and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to help her in cooking! The first thing we started to make was the sweets and the snacks. It was fascinating learning how to make the famous “samosas” from starting and I was proud of helping make around 70 of those with my mother. I previously had no clue on how samosas were made and only focused on eating them. But, now that I have actually made several of them, I feel delighted and the food you cook by your own hands tastes more delicious! My CAS Project was of providing country background and other vital information to my trip members before we actually started our adventure. So, before the trip I focused primarily on researching about the cultural and traditional aspect of the country and how we as foreigners could merge “into their lives” effectively. I found out more information on the sites we were heading towards such as the famous “Dambulla Cave Temple” and highlighted how important this is culturally to the people of Sri Lanka. I also introduced some basic tamil words, which is the most commonly spoken language in the country. The presentation that I presented has been included in Managebac. During the trip, I was also a leader for the entire day. Basically, my job was not only to instruct my group members about the day’s plan, but also to actually ensure that all the plans organized for the day actually takes place. For instance, as on the agenda we had to visit the local school, but I had to before call the school and talk to the principle/headmaster to aware them that we have arrived and would want to interact with their kids for a short while. Moreover, I had to make sure that all the 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, and diner) were available and under the budget set by the instructors. Hence, I had to manage the spending accordingly and at the same time the food had to satisfy the needs of everyone. I had to also think of what type of food to order as the group consisted of both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. And, after the trip, I was also the one to lead the GAP Night Celebration for our trip. I gave a two-minute speech covering everyone’s experience and how the trip was extremely beneficial and rewarding for every single individual. The transcript of the speech that I gave has also been included in Managebac. I was also involved in the GAP Food Packaging. The following activity required us to package basic food necessities that included grains, oats, vegetables, and rice that is basically extremely easy to cook. This is for the less fortunate people, which will be visited in our respective GAP destinations. The food contains all of the mentioned meals (like rice, vegetables etc.) packaged in a single bag. In the activity, we were able to package a total of 20,000 bags! My goal along with that of my group in the activity was to try to finish as much bags/packages as possible. This was basically so that more food would be provided for the less fortunate. We also focused on not wasting the food, while we were packaging. The trip was a memorable one and the level of amusement garnered throughout the whole week was enriching. What made the trip more remarkable was the bond that each individual had amongst the whole group. Being in the GAP trip to Langkawi the previous year and the GAP trip to Sri Lanka in this year was a completely different experience. I firmly believe that the trip to Sri Lanka was a much more captivating extravaganza and one of the main reasons is how well I had interacted with my group members. In fact, before the visit to Sri Lanka, I had barely known most of them; let alone interacted with them for even 10 seconds! But, during the trip I personally had the opportunity to spend time with people; I would have probably never interacted before. The most notable part of the trip would definitely be the long bus drives. It took more than 3 hours to reach our destinations each time we travelled on the bus. But, this is actually where everyone bonded so well with each other. Three hours of bus ride seemed to be a five minute walk, because of the amount of entertainment we had. Listening and singing along with the classical Boney M. music was hilarious. The amounts of riddles that we solved were uncountable with at least 7-8 riddles solved in a day. After the trip, it actually felt as if we knew the answers to every riddle out there. Hence, sharing a close bond with each other helped us to work collaboratively to not only achieve sheer amusement, but also on our service project. Apart from just having a recreational time, we spent two days on our community service. We had contributed money for a big room or a hall to be built in a local school in Colombo. We didn’t physically support the construction of this room, as initially expected; but interacted with the school kids. We played several games with them, most notably 3 mini-cricket matches, which I was greatly looking forward to before the trip. It was entertaining to play the sport after such a long time with kids who actually knew how to play cricket and have passion for it. I was also involved in teaching the younger kids some basic concepts such as that of numbers, alphabets etc. It was actually pretty surprising to observe the amount of knowledge these kids, who were probably between 7-9 years, had already possessed. Undoubtedly, I will never forget the remarkable reception that the school offered us. It was fabulous to experience their culture and traditional dance forms. It is fair to say that we were treated like kings and queens when we arrived there. Of course, this is what makes GAP so special. It allows us to assist those who require help and the end results are rewarding. Seeing the glittering smiles on the faces of the local people was truly special. Visiting the famous “Dambulla Cave Temple” was also a great cultural experience for me. It was overwhelming to observe the statues in the temple, because of how carefully it was crafted, and the intricate designs that contained beautiful colors and patterns. Rafting was another cherished activity that I did. The rapids were extremely strong and it was more than an adventure to deal with the obstacles along the way. In fact, this was the first time that I had rafted and by not being a confident swimmer, this was indeed a challenge. However, it is not to say that the experience of rafting was one to greatly savor. Sahil Kumar’s CAS International School of Kuala Lumpur Page 9 of 17

In this course, I developed my own fitness program and learnt the important steps in leading a fit and healthy life. The experiences I had in these wonderful fitness sessions are highlighted below. The purpose of electing Personal Fitness as a subject was mainly due to the fact that I had the incentive of wanting to improve my physical fitness. Before joining this course, my fitness level was not the one which I personally desired. At that time, my fitness status could have been described as “neutral,” which was basically neither too bad, nor awesome. This is further accentuated by the fact that I have not undertook any physical sport activity offered at ISKL during my two year stay at the school. However, it is not as if I am not a “fan” of physical sports; in fact I greatly love outdoor sports in particular football. In addition, I do play football (but not competitive) over the weekend with my peers and thoroughly enjoy it. I won’t consider my fitness level before the course to be pathetic or abysmal, but it was definitely not at that level which would enable me to regularly participate and perform at the highest level of physical sports. For instance, during football games I severely lacked the stamina and the endurance to continue playing for a sufficient period of time without taking a break. Moreover, I was a bit overweight (by around 10 kgs) at my age. In short, I had never really worked on improving my fitness, although I greatly desired to be a fit person. Obviously, I pursued this course of Personal Fitness with the sole purpose of improving my fitness and so that it enables me to focus on my fitness level more seriously. I definitely required adequate time to work on my fitness, as I am also pursuing the IB Diploma Program, which obviously makes life difficult and offers less “free” time to be spent. During the course of Fitness Personal, not only has my fitness improved, but it has also provided me with great knowledge on the basics of maintaining a fit life. For instance, I have learnt on the importance of creating a well-planned fitness program. Previously, it was common for me to randomly find time to work out in the gym without a clear idea of what I had to achieve. The first most pivotal aspect of being fit is to fully understand the purpose of why you actually want to be fit. Hence, it is vital to first formulate a reasonable fitness goal and set a time frame to when it should be achieved. After clearly identifying the fitness goal, a fitness program that accords with the respective goal has to be formed. While creating a fitness program, I learnt that it is significant to consider the principles of training in order to achieve the maximum output. I also learnt the importance of stretching and why it should be incorporated in a fitness program. People working out usually fail to notice the significance that stretching has. Different types of stretching were discussed so that our fitness programs could be improved further. These include (i) Ballistic stretching, (ii) Dynamic stretching, (iii) Active Stretching, (iv) Passive Stretching and (v) Static Stretching. There was much more learnt about the different types of muscles present and how certain workouts are effective for specific muscular parts of the body. It was important to understand how significant it is to plan what specific workout has to be done. It simply cannot be anything random and must be appropriate to an individual’s fitness goal and program. After undertaking this course, my fitness has definitely improved. The aspects of fitness that have improved the most would be speed and endurance. My personal fitness goal was (and is) to decrease weight and the purpose behind this ambition is to be able to build more stamina and endurance that is required for professional football. After having identified my goal and having worked out using my specific fitness program for sufficient fitness sessions, I have observed improvements in my speed and endurance aspects of my fitness. Before having worked out using our fitness programs, we did a fitness test known as the “Pacer Test” and I remember completing only 54 rounds. In order to achieve this, I would need to reconsider my current fitness goal which only focuses on improving aspects of fitness such as endurance and speed for football. Likewise, I would need to modify my fitness program which would have to incorporate more weight training and circuit training. There has to be careful but steady progression in order to improve muscle adaptation as well as improve soft tissue strength. And, also more focus would have to be on the amount of sets, reps and weights done per session and how it can steadily be increased. My future goals would be to continue to lose weight and to keep my progress of improving endurance and speed for physical sports such as football. I would also like to consider adding improvements in my muscular strength and endurance, so that I form a better physical body shape/figure. Obviously, in order to continue my progress I would need to abide by my fitness program and make necessary changes whenever possible. Life is definitely going to be hectic for me as graduation from high school is near and life in university about to commence. It is essential to not forget about my fitness regime, as it forms a crucial aspect of one’s personal well-being. In the upcoming future, I aspire to be in a fitness level that I can be proud of. I desire to have a better physical figure and want to be in a healthy shape. There is undoubtedly going to be a huge amount of stress in my life and I would require myself to be healthy in all those circumstances to avoid depression or other diseases that could be a result of a lack of fitness. In order to actually achieve this it is obvious that I must continue working on my fitness for a maximum period of time possible in a week. I would need to continue motivating myself by making changes in the specific fitness goals or by wanting to desperately achieve something. Therefore, I would need to continue working hard and never give up striving for a fitter lifestyle. Personal Fitness has been a pleasurable and a more than worthwhile course for me. I have seen improvements in my fitness due to the opportunities provided in this class. Sahil Kumar’s CAS International School of Kuala Lumpur Page 12 of 17

Activity Description: Through SPCA, animals (specifically dogs and cats) are assisted/helped by having their homes be cleaned, being fed nutritional and "proper"food and by overall being looked after! Obviously, this is the minimum that can be done to make their lives a better one! My goal in this activity would be to be able to interact more with these animals (more so pets)and to be actively involved in providing them with a better and proper life! 1. You have selected 3. planned and initiated activities, 6. issues of global importance and 7. ethical implications, but you did not really discuss them in your reflection so far. Please be sure to evaluate the extent to which you have achieved these learning outcomes. Since it was my very first season of SPCA, I have definitely improved as an animal caretaker. During the initial sessions, I was a bit reluctant to go near the dogs. This was probably since, it was not a normal thing for me to interact with these dogs. Personally, I don't own pets, but do wish to in the near future. As time progressed, my interactions with these pets improved, and I felt more involved with them. I was more "confident" around them and as a result I helped contribute to the organization. By constantly appearing for meetings, I helped to contribute ideas which would help raise funds for the pets. It was important to creatively "promote" the organization and we did so by creating posters/flyers, informing the ISKL student body though Panther Pause and school bulletin. Through these we had aware the students of how important it is to safeguard these pets and how we should value them. By helping to provide shelter to these homeless pets, who have suffered greatly on the streets, is of substantial importance. The organization, SPCA, provides this shelter and it is thus enviable to support their cause for the betterment of the society. Furthermore, these pets can be adopted for a certain period which will provide them with a family. Animal abuse is a serious offence and that must be counteracted by supporting the organization. Little efforts such as donations must be made to help tackle this bigger issue. In my first season of SPCA, I have become more involved in supporting this wonderful organization and have tried to play more than my "part" in providing these pets a better life. MONDAY, 06 JANUARY 2014 AWARENESS CHALLENGE COLLABORATION COMMITMENT ETHICS GLOBAL VALUE INITIATIVE NEW SKILLS The first season of SPCA (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was a great and a worthwhile experience. This was the first time that I had undertaken such a program, which promotes safeguard and assistance to the pets that unfortunately require. SPCA is also a brilliant platform to interact with these beautiful creatures who have met with unfortunate consequences and enables individuals like me to provide great support to the ones who have actually initiated and run the program for years. I believe that I have wholeheartedly collaborated with others to make this program a success, so far. I have always been focused during the period when you are interacting with the pets and also during the period of group discussions. I believe that I have actively participated in these discussions by offering my personal views on how the pets can be benefited more by our on-going services. We can always do more than what we are offering at the present. The first few weeks of the program went pretty smoothly, as we only had to look after the pets and provide basic necessities that they required. I can vividly remember my reaction when I had been given the opportunity to clean the dogs on my first day of service. I was cautious and to some extent nervous as I hadn't touched dogs for around 7-8 years when I had my own! Nevertheless, I did help to clean the dogs along with others and after several sessions I became more confident Sahil Kumar’s CAS International School of Kuala Lumpur Page 13 of 17

I wouldn't stand idly and pass my time by staring at the pets, as I confess of doing during my initial sessions. I would look to provide support anywhere needed such as feeding the pets, playing with the dogs or by even cleaning their shelters. As time passed by, I became more willing to participate and I developed a great bond with these wonderful pets. Obviously, we met with challenges on the road, but I believe we faced them well as a group. The major challenge was to definitely help find shelter for the dogs, as their previous ones were being renovated. Hence, to successfully counteract the challenge we had to effectively publicize that the pets required shelters for a certain time period and those willing to offer support can come visit us. I contributed in making posters that were put around the school and nearby the area to aware people. It was great fun to be involved in this whole process and it was more exciting when we successfully accomplished in finding sufficient shelter for these pets! This was definitely a great experience and is something that I will definitely love to continue in the upcoming seasons. Sahil Kumar’s CAS International School of Kuala Lumpur Page 14 of 17

From my two seasons in the organization, I feel that I have definitely improved as an animal caretaker. I can vividly recall how during the initial days in Season 1, I was not only cautious but also reluctant to go near the dogs. As embarrassing as it can get, I was indeed a bit nervous to touch the dogs and felt that I felt that I would get a disease or would fall sick. As a result, I would see myself simply strolling around offering minimal help and would simply pass my time. However, as time passed by, I definitely became more involved and saw myself contribute more to the organization. Especially in season 2, I saw myself as one of the leaders, because of my past experience with the organization and I was far more effective. I definitely didn't stroll around and used every minute possible to interact with the pets and help SPCA in any way possible. I really enjoyed cleaning their shelter with water and it was sort of my duty every time. Although, I didn't enjoy cleaning the " waste" left behind by the dogs; I still did it. I definitely felt more confident around the pets and as a result enjoyed their " company." I believe that I have wholeheartedly collaborated with others to make this program a success. • 16. TEDx Dates: May 10, 2014 to Oct 11, 2014 Activity Description: TED is a famous organization devoted for ideas worth spreading. Likewise, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self- organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. On October 11th, 2014, ISKL is hosting the school’s first ever TEDx event: TEDxISKL. The theme of the event is “The Creative Spark” and the assigned TEDx speakers will tackle some of humanity’s toughest questions, attempting to answer them with innovation, enterprise and enduring optimism. Personally, I am in the technical department/back stage of the TEDx program. After having discussed the specific requirements required to host a TEDx event, I have been assigned a role at the "left side of the stage" during the actual event. My role would be to help the speakers on to the green room, where they will wait until their turn to speak. I am also working closely with the stage crew of the ISKL theater to check what specific dimensions of the stage are needed, etc. We meet 5-6 times a month and have an hour long discussion with our respective groups. But days before the actual event (on October 11th, 2014) there will be more meetings and more workload. 1. Increased awareness of your strengths and areas for growth 2. Undertaking new challenges 3. What a journey it has been! The TEDx event has finally been held and that too very successfully after a long duration of hard work, perseverance and commitment. Hosting such a massive event has been a great challenge for all of us who were involved. Personally, by being involved in the production of this event was an achievement in itself. I have never undertook such a step as being a part of such a renowned and prestigious event. I was a part of the technical committee who firstly reviewed the specific requirements needed to host this event. By going to the official ted website, the members of the committee carefully checked all the requirements for instance the specific microphones, the positioning of cameras, the specific light (back light, front light etc.) and other technical aspects, which must be first met before hosting the event. Afterwards, we held couple of meetings regarding all of these critical aspects with Ms. Vonic (our technical committee head), Mr. Dashel (ISKL production/stage in-charge), Mr. Vincent and Sahil Kumar’s CAS International School of Kuala Lumpur Page 16 of 17
  • 17. Supervisor Review Thank you for supporting the CAS programme at International School of Kuala Lumpur. Please take the time to fill out this evaluation form. Please comment on the student’s progress, effort and commitment: Sahil joined the TEDx planning team during the initial call for volunteers and was committed to the event throughout the planning time. Although it was obvious that Sahil did not have any prior experience with organizing events of this size and at times needed guidance to direct his energy, he was always willing to do whatever was asked of him. I do hope to see Sahil use what he has learned from this experience and apply it to the next big undertaking he chooses -- I hope it will be the next TEDx event. ✓ The student has completed 1 Creativity hours. ✓ The student has completed 1 Service hours. This activity was ✓ Completed Not Completed Anka Vonic Supervisor other members of the ISKL stage and technical management. We carefully discussed all these requirements and reviewed if we are already meeting them or not. The biggest challenge was the positioning of the already present screen on the stage of the ISKL theater. According to the rules and regulations of TEDx, the speaker must be given a sufficient amount of space to move around while speaking. This was not possible with the placement of the screen in the ISKL stage. Moreover, according to their requirements, there has to be sufficient back light (one behind the screen) and this was again not possible with the position of our screen. Hence, we had to buy another screen and position it accordingly to meet all the requirements. Although, this was a challenge, it was ultimately successful. Furthermore, we also faced other challenges regarding how we should design our stage (in the theater). After long hours of discussions and looking at several TEDx videos and how those stages that had been designed, we came to a conclusion to put batik designs on the outer part of the stage and to label our stage "TEDxISKL" in red and position it to the left of the speaker. This is so that when recording the actual event, people can easily view the speaker and also essentially the sign - TEDxISKL. 2-3 weeks before the event, the workload became heavy and we were all more focused and committed in doing our best job. We were assigned special roles during the day of the event. Although, I was a part of the technical committee of TEDxISKL, most of us didn't have the experience to handle the "technical" part of the show. Hence, the people who were actually experienced in these roles of managing the stage, lighting, etc. were called. As a result, my role during the event changed to be a member of the back stage. I was assigned a role at the "left side of the stage" during the actual event. My role was to provide the "clicker" for the speakers before they head on to the stage for their speech. Although, this seems to be a very easy job - which it was indeed, I still had to make sure to be careful with the clickers. It would have been an embarrassment if I had lost the clicker or if I had clicked on a specific button then it would have caused a chaos and confusion with the technical department. So, I had to be careful and mindful of when to provide the clicker. Overall, this has been a beneficial experience for me as an individual. I had never been part of hosting such an important event and that too when it is an inaugural event hosted by ISKL for the very first time. I am proud of myself and other diligent members of the TEDx event. It was crucial to also collaborate well with other committees and make sure that everyone was on the "same page." I personally thank all the teachers and everyone involved for hosting a truly fascinating event. Sahil Kumar’s CAS International School of Kuala Lumpur Page 17 of 17
