The client has many Civil3D CADD design files and they would like to use these datasets to show on an online mapping platform. GHD hosts an ArcGIS Online platform for their client and publishes the spatial datasets there. From time to time, new CADD design files come in, and the data has to be appropriately manipulated to display on the mapping application. The Civil3D CADD files are not spatially referenced and require spatial adjustment and geo-referencing. Also, the data should be transformed into GIS datasets and normalized for the mapping application. We created an FME automation that takes the files from the SharePoint site, spatially adjusts them automatically, normalizes the data, converts them to GIS files, and publishes them directly in the ArcGIS Online platform.

At the Port of Portland FME has become a powerful tool. Once a tedious task that took sometimes days to complete is turned into a streamlined service or automated - word gets out that it was most likely the magic of FME. Then I hear - Cool! What else can we do with FME? We have FME doing everything from automated nightly tasks, self- service tasks, converting data formats and creating multiple data outputs - but the one that is getting the most attention (and saving tons of time and resources) is the big data efforts of BIM and Revit to GIS and our goal for creating a digital twin. And while we are focused primarily on this effort - I also find time to spin up more automated/self-service tasks in our FME Cloud instance like automating the water meter monthly billing process and creating reports that provide vital information instantly to users. Plus, I also work on some really cool, fun side research projects to test the limit of what I can do with FME like creating 360 videos as virtual tours.

Arkance Systems is the one of major CAx, BIM, GIS provider in Europe, with solutions based mainly on Autodesk technologies. Arkance Systems is a part of big international group - Groupe Monnoyeur. Our GIS division is delivering GIS solutions mostly to private enterprises, utilizing mainly own Arkance Systems technology - twiGIS. Besides usual utility-GIS (water, wastewater, heat, telco), we are focusing our GIS solutions on facility management of large public and industrial areas like airports, exhibition grounds, manufacturing plants, power plants, etc. Our main goal is to provide tools and solutions for reliable data management lifecycle and especially for effective data distribution and accessibility for the end users. As most of the GIS data (especially in utilities and facility management) are describing buildings and infrastructure coming from the construction activities, the nature of the data inputs is changing rapidly in these days: the usual CAD documentation is being replaced with BIM models. Therefore we have adjusted our tools for smooth BIM – GIS connection with these goals: Keep BIM model live through the whole building lifecycle (e.g. not just export the data and let the model die) Let BIM people use their tools in the most vanilla way (BIM modeler like Revit, CDE like BIM 360) Let the GIS users use the data from CAD, GIS, and BIM in the same way, with no difference to where the data originated So far, we have built a BIM connector to our twiGIS doing the entire job. The connector is based on Safe Software’s FME with heavy use of the new Revit Reader. The flexibility of the workspace definition enables us to adjust the BIM-GIS mapping to any flavor of any of the sides. Purpose – Update data used in several ArcGIS online maps used offline by remote field crews. The Challenge – The client needs to utilize ESRI’s offline capabilities as part of field inspections. Field workers download maps specific to their area of interest. This process creates replicas of any feature services utilized within the maps. Efficiently managing database replicas is essential in updating offline feature service data. The existing solution is labour intensive, with a chance of over-taxing the portal server. The Plan – As the feature services being utilized in the maps are read-only, it is possible to use the ArcGIS portal rest API via FME and update the data and refresh the offline maps. Because of these factors, the offline maps have not been updated regularly or consistently. By using FME and FME server, it is also possible to avoid over-taxing the ArcGIS portal server. The Process – FME is used to access the ArcGIS portal, update data, and refresh offline maps. The steps include: Detect changes in data to determine if an update is needed. Read new source data and update the feature services for the maps. Where required, manage replicas for the feature services. Use FME and the HTTP caller transformer to update offline maps. Incorporate error reporting for capturing issues between steps. Report updates to stakeholders with information pertaining to areas of interest. The final goal is to deploy this process as an automation via FME server allowing for more frequent updates. Thus, providing the field workers with more meaningful data.
