used to collect eyelashes on her glasses her

Now...who tf are y’all?
And what does retention mean
to you?
What retention means:
★ We focus on making sure that Black students who enter into UCSD
continue on at UCSD the following year.
★ Most definitions of retention focus on first-year students (both freshman
and transfer), but within BSU we focus on retaining all Black students,
no matter what year they’re in.
★ Retention does not have to solely be about academic success, because
the reasons Black students drop out of college do not only have to do
with college being academically hard.
★ The creation of BSU and even the BRC itself was centered in retention
efforts: to create a space where ALL Black students could belong on
Theme of the Year!

Exhibiting Blackness in any space, on a huge global level.
Inspired by Solange! We will incorporate this into our events, along
with our other 5 goals, which are self care, intersectionality, political
awareness, activism, and community involvement.
Goals of Retention for BSU (and SPACES)
BSU (Black Student Union):
★ Provide an environment that is conducive to Black academic excellence
★ Create a sense of belonging for Black students at UCSD
★ Address needs/potential barriers that may be affecting the well-being of Black students at
UCSD
SPACES (Student-Promoted Access Center for Education and Service):
★ Black empowerment: Black Empowerment focuses on career development, assisting
students with their academic success, and creating a comfortable and inclusive
environment for Black students.
★ Address the common concerns of students, e.g., alienation from the campus, lack of

Requirements:
★ Coordinate and manage a mentor/mentee program
★ Facilitate at least two study jams per quarter
★ Facilitate at least two study breaks per quarter
★ Plan at least one field trip per quarter in the greater San Diego community
★ Plan programs that emphasize the following: the theme for the year of the
Black Student Union, coordination with the Black Resource Center and the
sister organizations of the Black Student Union (which include, but are not
limited to: African Student Association, National Society of Black Engineers,
and the Black Graduate Student Association), maintain space for dialogue on

that is social in nature:
○ Study breaks (1 per quarter)

academic success:
○ Study jams (2 per quarter)
○ Promoting events/campus resources
(SPACES booklending, BRC/its
programs, OASIS, etc.)
○ Contribute ideas for BSU GBM (general
body meeting)

Political Education Consciousness
Coordinators:
● Plan any on/off campus events relating to
political consciousness/social justice:
○ Contribute ideas for BSU GBM
○ Study break (1 per quarter)
○ Help BSU ABC representative and
Cambria for ABC conference*

Leadership Development
Coordinators:
● Plan any on/off-campus events
focusing on leadership/professional
development:
○ Programs related to BSU
mentorship program
○ Assistance with programs related
to finances, careers, or
leadership
○ Promoting events for/supporting
the BRC mentorship program
○ Promoting campus/community
related programs
