Mitsubishi UFJ Co., Ltd. (MUS) was formed in October 2005 from a merger
between Mitsubishi Securities Co., Ltd. and UFJ Tsubasa Securities Co.,
Ltd. As the core securities company of the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group
(the MUFG Group), MUS provides wide-ranging services, including securities
trading and underwriting, various types of derivative transactions, and
advisory services related to M&A and asset securitization. Aiming to globalize
its securities and investment banking operations, MUS is establishing
subsidiaries and representative
offices in major cities in
Europe, the United States,
and Asia. Together with the

e-learning platform.

”

In the past, the company has primarily relied on instructor-led training (ILT)
to deliver the required learning. But with the increase in the speed and
globalization of the marketplace and the development of many new, more
sophisticated investment vehicles — as well as significant technology
advances — MUS decided it was time to look for a new, more effective and
flexible learning environment.
In 2004, MUS decided to select the Saba Learning Suite to meet its learning
needs. “ILT is limited by time and distance, which makes it challenging to
bring people together across our domestic and global office networks,” said
Mr. Mikihiko Osawa, General Manager, Education and Development Office
for MUS. “It is also impractical to continuously rely on senior employees
to teach newer employees through on-the-job training. Because of this,
e-learning became a highly prioritized educational tool for us.”

Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Co., Ltd.

Since Saba Learning was introduced for internal use in April
2004, approximately 9,000 employees, including temporary
and transferred staff, have benefited from the system. The
company has developed more than 200 courses covering
products, customer qualification, and compliance. In addition,
specific courses have been created for manager training and
new employee orientation. Depending on the offering, MUS
employees may be required to present a report or pass a test
to prove proficiency. For compliance, all employees are tested
to ensure they have met the rigorous standards established by
the particular regulatory body.
An Innovative Measurement Tool
MUS has also found Saba Learning Suite’s innovative
questionnaire tool to be effective for measuring information
retention.
“We use questionnaire in somewhat out-of-the-ordinary ways,”
Mr. Osawa said. “It’s given more like an employee satisfaction
survey or a competency assessment at the conclusion of
a seminar. So, we get a sense for more than just what was
absorbed in a particular course.”
The questionnaire tool helps MUS efficiently monitor whether
information is getting out to the people who need it. In this
way, the Saba Learning Suite supports MUS in terms of what
the field understands and how they are communicating with
customers regarding the various investment products and
programs.
Integration of e-Learning and Certification
MUS is particularly pleased with how Saba’s e-learning system
has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of its certification
programs, especially in areas such as Brokerage and Financial
Planning. Saba Certification Management streamlines the

administrative process by matching online e-learning and any
classroom learning with the standards required to become a
broker or certified financial planner. In addition, the solution not
only helps employees, but also enables company managers
to track the progress of individuals toward even the most
complex certifications.
Future Plans for Human Resource Development
Looking to the future, Mr. Osawa sees the Saba Learning Suite
continuing to play an integral role in allowing the company
to meet its obligation to serve customers better by ensuring
that its employees can provide the assistance and responsive
answers customers desire.
“The Saba Learning Suite has helped us make good progress
toward our goals in training, certification, and compliance —
but we can do so much more,” said Mr. Osawa. “To establish
an ideal learning environment, we want to make the system
even more attractive and easier for employees and affiliates to
use. This means we have to continue to improve and enhance
the solution over time to make it more functional and reliable
— to better suit people’s requirements in our offices across
Japan and working for affiliates worldwide.”
The system has already been upgraded several times since it
was launched in 2004, and new capabilities will continue to
be added to support the firm’s personal development, skills
training, and certification requirements.
Added Mr. Kenichi Kimura, manager of the e-learning program
at MUS, “We have already used Saba Learning in a number of
ways we didn’t anticipate when we started. We will continually
refine it to meet the needs of each employee, and help our
people monitor and measure their progress toward individual
and corporate growth goals.”

Saba enables organizations to build a transformative workplace where they can leverage their people
networks to become more competitive through innovation, speed, agility, and trust.
