Our Leadership Development Program (LDP) demonstrates our commitment to developing talent and our belief that moving talent across our businesses is fundamental to personal and professional growth. The program features a structured mix of challenging work experiences within your functional area, cross-company movement, dedicated training, mentoring relationships and interactions with leaders around the company.
Male vs. female mentor and bosses
This rotation program provides many benefits, including the opportunity to grow your technical and interpersonal skills, embrace ambiguous tasks, and gain a well rounded and cross-functional engineering experience.
Challenge initial career aspirations – I came out of college certain that I wanted to be an aerodynamics specialist. The program helped me challenge this, and taught me to seek out new experiences, roles and responsibilities throughout my career, so that my skills evolve and I become more well-rounded professionally.
Network at all levels – some people associate the word networking with only getting to know senior management. I realized quickly that having a strong network across all levels of the organization was invaluable. Spending time getting to know what people do, and what makes them tick helped to build relationships that will last and benefit your career.
Don’t be afraid of taking calculated risks in your career – seek out seemingly impossible assignments, roles in functions you are unfamiliar with, locations unknown to you. Because there are only two outcomes from doing this: you either plan, prepare and execute and you succeed. Or, you plan, prepare and execute and you do not succeed, but you learn from it. What to do differently next time. What types of uncertainty and risks to account for. The program by nature is designed to give us experiences out of our comfort zones. But, with the right support and attitude, this personally has been the best way to learn new things and develop new skills.
The program acted as a catalyst for my professional and personal growth. Though opportunities to network and access to formal leadership trainings contributed to this, I was most profoundly impacted by the lessons I learned during each of my rotations. Among all those lessons shines this: take ownership of your career and aggressively pursue it. A number of factors, I have found, contribute to the successful pursuit of this lesson. Among them are: 1) being open minded about the variety of opportunities a global and multi-industry company can offer you, 2) say yes to the opportunities that will stretch your abilities, and 3) if you feel disengaged/unchallenged, ASK for the opportunities that will interest and challenge you.
