In this presentation of The Ultimate Fashion History, we're
heading into the stylish 1950s where Mid-Century optimism
clashed with Cold War paranoia
• where the return to femininity seen in Dior's 'New Look'
• the chic sophistication of the Chanel Cardigan Suit lay in stark
contract to both the leather-clad rockers and/or the finger-
clicking Beatniks of the burgeoning teenage subculture.
• Audrey Hepburn for the “French Look” showcased the “gamine”
style of dress
• Marilyn Monroe was the blonde bombshell of the 1950s and
was famous for her billowy white halter dress
• Spanish-born, Cristobal Balenciaga was a designer who broke
new ground and was one of the few haute couturiers in Paris
who knew how to cut Coco Chanel designed wearable,
practical clothes for women, based on ease and comfort
