VALUE IS DERIVED FROM LATIN ROOT ‘VALERE’
MEANING
‘TO BE STRONG AND VIGIROUS’
 TO BE VALUE, IS TO HAVE A CERTAIN VALUE i.e. THE POWER TO BE
SOME SPECIFIC THING.
 IT IS THE VALUE OF A THING OR AN IDEA THAT MAKES US
DESIRABLE OR USEFUL.
 IT IS THE PERCEPTION ABOUT WHAT IS GOOD OR BAD, RIGHT OR
WRONG.
VALUES….
 THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF FORCE WITH WHICH AN
OBJECT CAUSES A SUBJECT TO ATTAIN ITS PURPOSE.
 A SET OF PRINCIPLES WHEREBY A CONDUCT IS
DIRECTED AND REGULATED AS A GUIDE FOR
INDIVIDUAL OR SOCIAL GROUPS.
( INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF SOCIAL SCIENCE )
VALUE EDUCATION
IT IS THE AGGREGATE OF ALL THE PROCESS BY MEANS
OF WHICH A PERSON DEVELOPS ABILITIES, ATTITUDES
AND OTHER FORMS OF THE POSITIVE VALUES IN THE
SOCIETY IN WHICH HE LIVES. (C.V. GOOD)

PREFERENCES REGARDING THE ‘ENDS’ TO BE
ACHIEVED.
 THEY ARE THE GOALS INDIVIDUALS WOULD LIKE TO
ACHIEVE DURING THEIR LIFE TIME.
 E.g. – prosperity, achievement, equality, wisdom etc.
INSTRUMENTAL VALUES
 THEY REPRESENT THE ‘MEANS’ FOR ACHIEVING
DESIRED ENDS.

 People with integrity often have the same characteristics. They
are humble, strong sense of self, high esteem and are self-
confident.

 THE CHARACTER OF A PERSON CONSISTS OF ALL THE
QUALITIES HE HAS THAT MAKE HIM DISTINCT FROM
