 As you might expect for a technology so
expansive and ever-changing, it is impossible
to credit the invention of the Internet to a
single person.
 The Internet was the work of dozens of
pioneering scientists, programmers and
engineers who each developed new features
and technologies that eventually merged to
become the “information superhighway” we
know today.
4SURBHI SAROHA
 The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the
late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, or the Advanced
Research Projects Agency Network.
 Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET
used packet switching to allow multiple computers to
communicate on a single network.
 The technology continued to grow in the 1970s after scientists
Robert Kahn andVinton Cerf developedTransmission Control
Protocol and Internet Protocol, orTCP/IP, a communications
model that set standards for how data could be transmitted
between multiple networks.
 ARPANET adoptedTCP/IP on January 1, 1983, and from there
researchers began to assemble the “network of networks” that
became the modern Internet.
5SURBHI SAROHA
 WorldWideWeb begins as a CERN (European
Organization for Nuclear Research) project
called ENQUIRE, initiated by British scientist
Tim Berners-Lee.
 Other names considered for the project
include “The Information Mesh” and “The
Mine of Information.”
 AOL launches its Instant Messenger chat
service and begins welcoming users with the
iconic greeting “You’ve got mail!”
6SURBHI SAROHA
 The NeXT Computer used byTim Berners-Lee at
CERN.
 42% of American adults have used a computer.
 World’s first website and server go live at CERN,
running onTim Berners-Lee’s NeXT computer,
which bears the message “This machine is a
server. DO NOT POWER DOWN!”
 Tim Berners-Lee develops the firstWeb browser
WorldWideWeb.
 Archie, the first tool to search the internet is
developed by McGill University student Alan
Emtage.
7SURBHI SAROHA
 Researchers rig up a live shot of a coffee pot
so they could tell from their computer
screens when a fresh pot had been brewed.
 Later connected to theWorldWideWeb, it
becomes the first webcam.

 Importance of internet in business:You can
understand the importance of the internet in business
by the inventions of Digital Marketing, Internet
banking, and eCommerce business models.
 The Internet is providing great benefits for business
communication.
 The Internet is the easiest way for a business to
connect with customer and clients.
 The business organization is using high-speed
internet to speed up the production.
9SURBHI SAROHA
 Companies are getting customer data and buying
habits and creating marketing strategies based on the
analysis.
 New and innovative online business models are
coming.
 Everyone is searching for online business ideas.
People are working from home for companies around
the world.
 Business information is fastest than ever. So, you can
see from all of this is that the internet is now the
backbone of an offline business to sell online.
 And the internet is a heart for online business.
10SURBHI SAROHA
 Internet technology invented new methods of
doing business.
 Internet is important for business development.
Internet technology provides powerful
communication and marketing tools.
 The Internet is a new Bazaar in which you can
find online shops, online degree programs and a
lot more.
 You can browse various educational and
business development websites, management
service platforms anytime & anywhere.
11SURBHI SAROHA
 Internet is important to make a business successful.
 Internet helps businesses to grow, achieve goals and
become successful in this competitive market.
 Marketing is important in business and in this case,
the internet is the first and most important marketing
tool business owners are looking for.
 The Internet provides great benefits for entrepreneurs
to create a business infrastructure based on
customer’s data and information.

 1. Set your purpose and goals
 What is the purpose of your website? Is it to gain publicity
for your business? To sell your inventory? To rally support
behind a cause? It’s important to identify your website’s
purpose, as well as your target audience.
 You should also define your goals. How many visitors do
you expect per month? How many do you expect will sign
up for your newsletter? How much in sales do you expect
to make?
 Set measurable, specific goals for your website that are in
line with your marketing goals. An analytics tool like
Google Analytics will allow you to monitor your website’s
performance over time.
13SURBHI SAROHA
 Whether you’re an established, mid-sized organization or
a fledgling start-up, you should always set a budget for
your website expenses.
 This will probably include funds for web design,
programming, and web hosting (though other expenses
may apply).
 Research the market by shopping around and consulting
with professionals. Don’t sell yourself short by comparing
prices alone.
 What you save in money you may later pay for with a
lackluster site and lots of headaches.
 It’s better to choose team members based on experience,
insightfulness, references, and examples of work.
14SURBHI SAROHA
 Company stakeholders (owner, marketing
manager, or whoever else represents a primary
function of the business)
 Web developer
 Content writer and/or editor
 HTML/CSS professional
 Web and graphic designer
 Make sure everyone on your team knows their
role and what is expected of them, and that they
stay abreast of deadlines and new
developments.
15SURBHI SAROHA
 What kind of content will you be displaying on
your website? Content is basically anything that
gives your visitors information. It can include,
but is not limited to:
 Blog posts
 Documents
 Video
 Pictures (such as in a gallery)
 Slideshows
 Embedded social media feeds (such as your
Twitter stream or Facebook page updates)
16SURBHI SAROHA
 Decide what pages you’ll be using and what features will
be on each one.
 Most websites have an About and Contact page, but the
pages you use should meet your business’ needs.
 6. Create a mock-up
 A page mock-up, also know as a wireframe, is essentially
the outline of your website (with the initial design being
the first draft).
 Usually created in Photoshop or Fireworks, you don’t have
to put too much detail into your mock-up. Use
placeholder text to fill pages, and don’t worry about
details.
 This is just to give everyone an idea of what the website
will look like.
17SURBHI SAROHA
 The importance of good web design can’t be stressed
enough.
 Good website design includes both usability and
aesthetics.
 An ugly website will drive away visitors, as will a
website that’s difficult to navigate.
 Test it out
 Testing is important for getting out bugs out and
catching details that you might have missed initially.
 Make sure your website shows up the way you want it
to in all browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Internet
Explorer, and mobile web browsers like Safari and
Opera Mini.
18SURBHI SAROHA
 Once your site is launched, the work isn’t over. A
website is an ongoing entity that continuously
represents your company, so maintenance is
very important.
 Monitor your analytics software to see how your
website is performing with the public. Keep an
eye on metrics like your number of unique
visitors, bounce rate, and which pages are most
popular on your website.
 You might find that certain metrics are more
useful to you than others, but that is information
you’ll find out over time.
19SURBHI SAROHA
 WWW
 TheWorldWideWeb (WWW) is a network of
online content that is formatted in HTML and
accessed via HTTP.
 The term refers to all the interlinked HTML
pages that can be accessed over the Internet.
 TheWorldWideWeb was originally designed
in 1991 byTim Berners-Lee while he was a
contractor at CERN.
20SURBHI SAROHA
 TheWorldWideWeb is most often referred to simply
as “theWeb.”
 TheWorldWideWeb is what most people think of as
the Internet.
 It is all theWeb pages, pictures, videos and other
online content that can be accessed via aWeb
browser.
 The Internet, in contrast, is the underlying network
connection that allows us to send email and access
theWorldWideWeb.
 The earlyWeb was a collection of text-based sites
hosted by organizations that were technically gifted
enough to set up aWeb server and learn HTML.
21SURBHI SAROHA
 It has continued to evolve since the original
design, and it now includes interactive (social)
media and user-generated content that
requires little to no technical skills.
 We owe the freeWeb to Berners-Lee and
CERN’s decision to give away one of the
greatest inventions of the century.
22SURBHI SAROHA
 FileTransfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard
Internet protocol for transmitting files
between computers on the Internet over
TCP/IP connections.
 FTP is a client-server protocol where a client
will ask for a file, and a local or remote server
will provide it.
23SURBHI SAROHA
 The end-users machine is typically called the
local host machine, which is connected via
the internet to the remote host—which is the
second machine running the FTP software.
 Anonymous FTP is a type of FTP that allows
users to access files and other data without
needing an ID or password.
 Some websites will allow visitors to use a
guest ID or password- anonymous FTP allows
this.
24SURBHI SAROHA
 Although a lot of file transfer is now handled
using HTTP, FTP is still commonly used to
transfer files “behind the scenes” for other
applications — e.g., hidden behind the user
interfaces of banking, a service that helps
build a website, such asWix or SquareSpace,
or other services.
 It is also used, viaWeb browsers, to
download new applications.
25SURBHI SAROHA
 HTTP means HyperTextTransfer Protocol.
 HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the
WorldWideWeb and this protocol defines
how messages are formatted and
transmitted, and what actionsWeb servers
and browsers should take in response to
various commands.
 Note:https://theintactone.com/2019/10/13/wt
e-u1-topic-7-www-ftp-http/
26SURBHI SAROHA
 For example, when you enter a URL in your browser, this
actually sends an HTTP command to theWeb server
directing it to fetch and transmit the requested Web page.
 The other main standard that controls how theWorld
Wide Web works is HTML, which covers howWeb pages
are formatted and displayed.
 HTTP is called a stateless protocol because each
command is executed independently, without any
knowledge of the commands that came before it.
 This is the main reason that it is difficult to implement
Web sites that react intelligently to user input. This
shortcoming of HTTP is being addressed in a number of
new technologies, including ActiveX, Java, JavaScript and
cookies.
27SURBHI SAROHA
 Search engine is a service that allows
Internet users to search for content via
the World Wide Web (WWW).
 A user enters keywords or key phrases into a
search engine and receives a list ofWeb
content results in the form of websites,
images, videos or other online data.
 The list of content returned via a search
engine to a user is known as a search engine
results page (SERP).
28SURBHI SAROHA
 To simplify, think of a search engine as two
components. First a spider/web crawler trolls the
web for content that is added to the search
engine’s index.
 Then, when a user queries a search engine,
relevant results are returned based on the search
engine’s algorithm.
 Early search engines were based largely on page
content, but as websites learned to game the
system, algorithms have become much more
complex and search results returned can be
based on literally hundreds of variables.
29SURBHI SAROHA
 There used to be a significant number of
search engines with significant market share.
Currently, Google and Microsoft’s Bing
control the vast majority of the market.
(WhileYahoo generates many queries, their
back-end search technology is outsourced to
Microsoft).
 Note:https://theintactone.com/2019/10/13/wt
e-u1-topic-8-search-engine/
30SURBHI SAROHA
 Social media analytics is the practice of gathering data
from social media websites and analyzing that data using
social media analytics tools to make business decisions.
 The most common use of social media analytics is to mine
customer sentiment to support marketing and customer
service activities.
 The first step in a social media intelligence initiative is to
determine which business goals the data that is gathered
and analyzed will benefit.
 Typical objectives include increasing revenues, reducing
customer service costs, getting feedback on products and
services, and improving public opinion of a particular
product or business division.
31SURBHI SAROHA
 Once the business goals have been identified,
businesses should define key performance
indicators (KPIs) to objectively evaluate the
business analytics data.

Web Technology & E-Commerce Unit 1

  • 1. By : SURBHI SAROHA
  • 2.  UNIT 1  Growth and Potential of Internet  History of Web and Internet, Milestones and LatestTrends  Values of Internet for Business  Website Planning:  Strategies and Approaches  Adding website Profiles, Demographic, Visitors,Traffic Sources 2SURBHI SAROHA
  • 3.  Content, Setting Goals and Custom  Sitemap, Diagnostics for errors  Web Protocols andTechnologies:  WWW, FTP, HTTP  Search Engine  Social Networking and Analytics 3SURBHI SAROHA
  • 4.  As you might expect for a technology so expansive and ever-changing, it is impossible to credit the invention of the Internet to a single person.  The Internet was the work of dozens of pioneering scientists, programmers and engineers who each developed new features and technologies that eventually merged to become the “information superhighway” we know today. 4SURBHI SAROHA
  • 5.  The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network.  Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET used packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network.  The technology continued to grow in the 1970s after scientists Robert Kahn andVinton Cerf developedTransmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol, orTCP/IP, a communications model that set standards for how data could be transmitted between multiple networks.  ARPANET adoptedTCP/IP on January 1, 1983, and from there researchers began to assemble the “network of networks” that became the modern Internet. 5SURBHI SAROHA
  • 6.  WorldWideWeb begins as a CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) project called ENQUIRE, initiated by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee.  Other names considered for the project include “The Information Mesh” and “The Mine of Information.”  AOL launches its Instant Messenger chat service and begins welcoming users with the iconic greeting “You’ve got mail!” 6SURBHI SAROHA
  • 7.  The NeXT Computer used byTim Berners-Lee at CERN.  42% of American adults have used a computer.  World’s first website and server go live at CERN, running onTim Berners-Lee’s NeXT computer, which bears the message “This machine is a server. DO NOT POWER DOWN!”  Tim Berners-Lee develops the firstWeb browser WorldWideWeb.  Archie, the first tool to search the internet is developed by McGill University student Alan Emtage. 7SURBHI SAROHA
  • 8.  Researchers rig up a live shot of a coffee pot so they could tell from their computer screens when a fresh pot had been brewed.  Later connected to theWorldWideWeb, it becomes the first webcam.  Note: For more content follow the link below  https://theintactone.com/2019/10/13/wte-u1- topic-1-history-of-web-and-internet- milestones-and-latest-trends/ 8SURBHI SAROHA
  • 9.  Importance of internet in business:You can understand the importance of the internet in business by the inventions of Digital Marketing, Internet banking, and eCommerce business models.  The Internet is providing great benefits for business communication.  The Internet is the easiest way for a business to connect with customer and clients.  The business organization is using high-speed internet to speed up the production. 9SURBHI SAROHA
  • 10.  Companies are getting customer data and buying habits and creating marketing strategies based on the analysis.  New and innovative online business models are coming.  Everyone is searching for online business ideas. People are working from home for companies around the world.  Business information is fastest than ever. So, you can see from all of this is that the internet is now the backbone of an offline business to sell online.  And the internet is a heart for online business. 10SURBHI SAROHA
  • 11.  Internet technology invented new methods of doing business.  Internet is important for business development. Internet technology provides powerful communication and marketing tools.  The Internet is a new Bazaar in which you can find online shops, online degree programs and a lot more.  You can browse various educational and business development websites, management service platforms anytime & anywhere. 11SURBHI SAROHA
  • 12.  Internet is important to make a business successful.  Internet helps businesses to grow, achieve goals and become successful in this competitive market.  Marketing is important in business and in this case, the internet is the first and most important marketing tool business owners are looking for.  The Internet provides great benefits for entrepreneurs to create a business infrastructure based on customer’s data and information.  Note: https://theintactone.com/2019/10/13/wte-u1- topic-2-values-of-internet-for-business/ 12SURBHI SAROHA
  • 13.  1. Set your purpose and goals  What is the purpose of your website? Is it to gain publicity for your business? To sell your inventory? To rally support behind a cause? It’s important to identify your website’s purpose, as well as your target audience.  You should also define your goals. How many visitors do you expect per month? How many do you expect will sign up for your newsletter? How much in sales do you expect to make?  Set measurable, specific goals for your website that are in line with your marketing goals. An analytics tool like Google Analytics will allow you to monitor your website’s performance over time. 13SURBHI SAROHA
  • 14.  Whether you’re an established, mid-sized organization or a fledgling start-up, you should always set a budget for your website expenses.  This will probably include funds for web design, programming, and web hosting (though other expenses may apply).  Research the market by shopping around and consulting with professionals. Don’t sell yourself short by comparing prices alone.  What you save in money you may later pay for with a lackluster site and lots of headaches.  It’s better to choose team members based on experience, insightfulness, references, and examples of work. 14SURBHI SAROHA
  • 15.  Company stakeholders (owner, marketing manager, or whoever else represents a primary function of the business)  Web developer  Content writer and/or editor  HTML/CSS professional  Web and graphic designer  Make sure everyone on your team knows their role and what is expected of them, and that they stay abreast of deadlines and new developments. 15SURBHI SAROHA
  • 16.  What kind of content will you be displaying on your website? Content is basically anything that gives your visitors information. It can include, but is not limited to:  Blog posts  Documents  Video  Pictures (such as in a gallery)  Slideshows  Embedded social media feeds (such as your Twitter stream or Facebook page updates) 16SURBHI SAROHA
  • 17.  Decide what pages you’ll be using and what features will be on each one.  Most websites have an About and Contact page, but the pages you use should meet your business’ needs.  6. Create a mock-up  A page mock-up, also know as a wireframe, is essentially the outline of your website (with the initial design being the first draft).  Usually created in Photoshop or Fireworks, you don’t have to put too much detail into your mock-up. Use placeholder text to fill pages, and don’t worry about details.  This is just to give everyone an idea of what the website will look like. 17SURBHI SAROHA
  • 18.  The importance of good web design can’t be stressed enough.  Good website design includes both usability and aesthetics.  An ugly website will drive away visitors, as will a website that’s difficult to navigate.  Test it out  Testing is important for getting out bugs out and catching details that you might have missed initially.  Make sure your website shows up the way you want it to in all browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and mobile web browsers like Safari and Opera Mini. 18SURBHI SAROHA
  • 19.  Once your site is launched, the work isn’t over. A website is an ongoing entity that continuously represents your company, so maintenance is very important.  Monitor your analytics software to see how your website is performing with the public. Keep an eye on metrics like your number of unique visitors, bounce rate, and which pages are most popular on your website.  You might find that certain metrics are more useful to you than others, but that is information you’ll find out over time. 19SURBHI SAROHA
  • 20.  WWW  TheWorldWideWeb (WWW) is a network of online content that is formatted in HTML and accessed via HTTP.  The term refers to all the interlinked HTML pages that can be accessed over the Internet.  TheWorldWideWeb was originally designed in 1991 byTim Berners-Lee while he was a contractor at CERN. 20SURBHI SAROHA
  • 21.  TheWorldWideWeb is most often referred to simply as “theWeb.”  TheWorldWideWeb is what most people think of as the Internet.  It is all theWeb pages, pictures, videos and other online content that can be accessed via aWeb browser.  The Internet, in contrast, is the underlying network connection that allows us to send email and access theWorldWideWeb.  The earlyWeb was a collection of text-based sites hosted by organizations that were technically gifted enough to set up aWeb server and learn HTML. 21SURBHI SAROHA
  • 22.  It has continued to evolve since the original design, and it now includes interactive (social) media and user-generated content that requires little to no technical skills.  We owe the freeWeb to Berners-Lee and CERN’s decision to give away one of the greatest inventions of the century. 22SURBHI SAROHA
  • 23.  FileTransfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard Internet protocol for transmitting files between computers on the Internet over TCP/IP connections.  FTP is a client-server protocol where a client will ask for a file, and a local or remote server will provide it. 23SURBHI SAROHA
  • 24.  The end-users machine is typically called the local host machine, which is connected via the internet to the remote host—which is the second machine running the FTP software.  Anonymous FTP is a type of FTP that allows users to access files and other data without needing an ID or password.  Some websites will allow visitors to use a guest ID or password- anonymous FTP allows this. 24SURBHI SAROHA
  • 25.  Although a lot of file transfer is now handled using HTTP, FTP is still commonly used to transfer files “behind the scenes” for other applications — e.g., hidden behind the user interfaces of banking, a service that helps build a website, such asWix or SquareSpace, or other services.  It is also used, viaWeb browsers, to download new applications. 25SURBHI SAROHA
  • 26.  HTTP means HyperTextTransfer Protocol.  HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the WorldWideWeb and this protocol defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actionsWeb servers and browsers should take in response to various commands.  Note:https://theintactone.com/2019/10/13/wt e-u1-topic-7-www-ftp-http/ 26SURBHI SAROHA
  • 27.  For example, when you enter a URL in your browser, this actually sends an HTTP command to theWeb server directing it to fetch and transmit the requested Web page.  The other main standard that controls how theWorld Wide Web works is HTML, which covers howWeb pages are formatted and displayed.  HTTP is called a stateless protocol because each command is executed independently, without any knowledge of the commands that came before it.  This is the main reason that it is difficult to implement Web sites that react intelligently to user input. This shortcoming of HTTP is being addressed in a number of new technologies, including ActiveX, Java, JavaScript and cookies. 27SURBHI SAROHA
  • 28.  Search engine is a service that allows Internet users to search for content via the World Wide Web (WWW).  A user enters keywords or key phrases into a search engine and receives a list ofWeb content results in the form of websites, images, videos or other online data.  The list of content returned via a search engine to a user is known as a search engine results page (SERP). 28SURBHI SAROHA
  • 29.  To simplify, think of a search engine as two components. First a spider/web crawler trolls the web for content that is added to the search engine’s index.  Then, when a user queries a search engine, relevant results are returned based on the search engine’s algorithm.  Early search engines were based largely on page content, but as websites learned to game the system, algorithms have become much more complex and search results returned can be based on literally hundreds of variables. 29SURBHI SAROHA
  • 30.  There used to be a significant number of search engines with significant market share. Currently, Google and Microsoft’s Bing control the vast majority of the market. (WhileYahoo generates many queries, their back-end search technology is outsourced to Microsoft).  Note:https://theintactone.com/2019/10/13/wt e-u1-topic-8-search-engine/ 30SURBHI SAROHA
  • 31.  Social media analytics is the practice of gathering data from social media websites and analyzing that data using social media analytics tools to make business decisions.  The most common use of social media analytics is to mine customer sentiment to support marketing and customer service activities.  The first step in a social media intelligence initiative is to determine which business goals the data that is gathered and analyzed will benefit.  Typical objectives include increasing revenues, reducing customer service costs, getting feedback on products and services, and improving public opinion of a particular product or business division. 31SURBHI SAROHA
  • 32.  Once the business goals have been identified, businesses should define key performance indicators (KPIs) to objectively evaluate the business analytics data.  Note:https://theintactone.com/2019/10/13/wt e-u1-topic-9-social-networking-and- analytics/ 32SURBHI SAROHA
