What is Geocaching
   Real world scavenger-
    treasure hunt
   All over the world
   Hide a box full of non-
    valuable items
   Scavengers use hints
    and coordinates given
    by stasher to locate
    cache
   Uses GPS or smart
    phone with GPS
    capabilities
General Rules
   Private property off limits unless otherwise
    specified
   Take something, leave something
   Leave environment exactly as you found it
Relevance to social media
   Caches are logged on
    forums
   Discussion boards about
    new ideas and locations
   Cache finds can be
    tweeted or shared on
    Facebook
   A society of adventurous
    people who share and
    communicate a common
    interest
   Leads people to discover
    new things, often in their
    own city
Personal Insight
   Someone else out there has seen this exact
    same cache
   A way to fight the negative effect social media
    can have on one’s adventurous spirit
   Social media leads to new and interesting
    sites, geocaching leads to new and interesting
    sights
   Happy medium between social media and the
    outside world
Cautions
   Keep it as a low impact tourism activity
   Don’t alter the environment where the cache is
    located
   Try not to look too suspicious
   Don’t include the location of the cache in your
    Facebook post if you choose to do so
   Wait until you get home to post about it
   No tresspassing
