Rapid urban growth is putting pressure on governments to provide water and sanitation services. As populations increase and facilities are built closer to residences, it is difficult to site essential wastewater treatment plants. Residents living near industrial facilities are more aware of potential odour issues. SUEZ has developed an integrated odour management system called NOSE that uses both technical and community engagement approaches to characterize, treat, and monitor odour emissions to help integrate industrial facilities into local communities.

between residential and industrial

treatment facilities.

mapped using dedicated sensors, mathematical models
and data such as customer complaints.
Humanapproach
Local community engagement utilising Odour Wheel®
developed specifically for each industrial activity or
neighbourhood. Increased communication between local
residents and operators enables a local ‘Nose Jury’ to
effectively characterise the odour footprint. Residents
are educated on identification of odour types with the
wheel providing useful descriptors, such as ‘burnt
match’ or ‘rotten eggs’, to help identify the location and
source of nuisance odours.

Odour Wheel®
methodology relates a perceived odour with a recognised
and familiar odour. The tool can be adapted to different industrial activities.
Site operators, customers and neighbouring residents are trained in the
characterisation and recognition of odours specific to the site.
This common language shared by all stakeholders allows development of
a constructive dialogue and integration of the facilities into their social and
environmental context.

NOSE is a proven odour
management solution being
used in over 200 projects
throughout the world.
In France, SUEZ introduced NOSE to collaborate
with the community of Bordeaux, to evaluate the odour
emissions and anticipate nuisance odours from urban
wastewater treatment activities.
In Australia, SUEZ worked with Sydney Water and the
University of New South Wales across six waste water
treatment plants between May 2012 to November 2014
to study odour nuisances associated with biosolids.
Currently, in collaboration with Allwater and SA Water,
SUEZ managed odours associated with the sewage
collection network in metropolitan Adelaide.
