2. When evacuating the building or work area:
• STAY CALM and DO NOT PANIC
• Proceed to the closest safe exit away from
the emergency do not use the elevator
• Follow instructions of Public Safety Officers
and Emergency Evacuation Volunteers (EEVs)
Once outside the building, continue to follow
the directions of Public Safety Officers who will
direct you to an assembly area.
3. Based on the nature of the incident,
individuals may be instructed by Public Safety
to stay in place.
If you are instructed to stay in place:
• Do not stand in hallways or stairwells
• Do not stand near windows or doors
• Do not leave your immediate area if you are
in a room
• Wait for further instructions

6. In order to receive prompt notification of
emergency situations that impact the campus,
the University will use text message and cell
phone calls to issue emergency alerts.

• St. John’s will not share your number with
any other persons or organizations.
• The brief emergency text and voice message
will simply provide information on location
of emergency and instructions on the action
to take.
7. St. John’s University is very fortunate to have
an excellent working relationship with NYPD
and FDNY as well as with the NYC Office of
Emergency Management.
Public Safety is routinely informed of any
emergency affecting the surrounding communities.
