Impacts of cultivation practices and
water management in the post-vegetative stage
on rice grain yield and water productivity
2017 International Annual Meetings of ASA-CSSA-SSSA on
‘Managing Global Resources for a Secure Future’
October 22-25, 2017 in Tampa, Florida, USA
Background ‘Managing Global Resources for a Secure Future’
Rice, a staple food for billions, is a thirsty crop;
Demand for rice is growing because of a rising global population;
But gains in yield have slowed greatly since the Green Revolution
Global food security: how to achieve this sustainably under changing climate?
To secure the future for human beings, we need to manage resources more
efficiently, using scientific knowledge and outside-the-box innovations
SRI: may be an OPTION
KEY ISSUES
Enhance crop productivity,
Using less water and other inputs,
Producing more sustainably,
Without affecting the environment
System of Rice Intensification (SRI) - What is it?
A new method of rice cultivation developed in Madagascar some 30 years ago
SRI is a methodology based on good agronomic principles, raising production by
25-50% or more, with less requirement of inputs (seeds, water, fertilizer), also
with climate resilience, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses of climate change
SRI introduces certain changes in management practices which together provide
better growing conditions for rice plants, particularly in their root zones,
compared with those for plants grown with traditional rice cultivation practices
SRI is a system, rather than a technology because it is not a fixed set of practices.
While a number of specific practices are associated with SRI, these should always
be tested and adapted according to local conditions rather than simply adopted
Improved phenotypes from a given genotype already seen in >55 countries
Background
Six Elements of SRI
Background
The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) recommends keeping rice field soils moist
but unflooded during the crop’s vegetative stage, with alternate wetting and
drying up to panicle initiation; then maintaining shallow flooding (1-2 cm) of the
field during the post-vegetative stage of crop growth.
No evidence-based evaluation is available on the impact of flooding paddy-fields
continuously vs. alternately during post-vegetative stage under SRI management,
and how this could influence the crops’ physiology, their root growth, grain yield,
and water productivity.
This research was undertaken to see if further reductions
in water consumption could be introduced in SRI rice
production without sacrificing attainable yield.

Whatisscience?
Take-home points
• SRI method improves morphological features and physiological
performances of rice crop.
• SRI crops are able to achieve greater grain yield even with
reduced applications of water due to their more vigorous root
growth, greater root activity, delayed leaf senescence, higher
photosynthetic rate, and greater rate of grain-filling compared
with conventionally-managed rice crops.
• Water productivity can be enhanced by about 90% when using
the suite of practices that constitute SRI. In our trials, these
methods reached a productivity of 6.3 kg rice ha-mm-1 compared
to 3.3 kg rice ha-mm-1 with CMP. Under SRI management, there
was a 58% enhancement of yield with 16% less irrigation water.
Six-fold reduction in the number of plants m-2 under SRI
• With SRI: global resources are managed more efficiently
(less seed and less water produce more food)
• Studies on enhancing SRI yield and water productivity
further using other water-saving irrigation methods like
drip or sprinkler systems should also be investigated.
• Possibly together with SRI management, new irrigation
technology could be made further more productive in
terms of their use of land, labor and (especially) water.
SRI lowers GHG emissions and global warming potential; crops are
more climate-resilient; in most situations, also less labor requirement;
crops are more stress tolerant; production is more sustainable, etc.

1708 - Impacts of cultivation practices and water management in the post-vegetative stage on rice grain yield and water productivity

  • 1. Amod K. Thakur, K.G. Mandal, R.K. Mohanty and S.K. Ambast ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management, Bhubaneswar, India Impacts of cultivation practices and water management in the post-vegetative stage on rice grain yield and water productivity 2017 International Annual Meetings of ASA-CSSA-SSSA on ‘Managing Global Resources for a Secure Future’ October 22-25, 2017 in Tampa, Florida, USA
  • 2. Background ‘Managing Global Resources for a Secure Future’ Rice, a staple food for billions, is a thirsty crop; Demand for rice is growing because of a rising global population; But gains in yield have slowed greatly since the Green Revolution Global food security: how to achieve this sustainably under changing climate? To secure the future for human beings, we need to manage resources more efficiently, using scientific knowledge and outside-the-box innovations SRI: may be an OPTION KEY ISSUES Enhance crop productivity, Using less water and other inputs, Producing more sustainably, Without affecting the environment
  • 3. System of Rice Intensification (SRI) - What is it? A new method of rice cultivation developed in Madagascar some 30 years ago SRI is a methodology based on good agronomic principles, raising production by 25-50% or more, with less requirement of inputs (seeds, water, fertilizer), also with climate resilience, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses of climate change SRI introduces certain changes in management practices which together provide better growing conditions for rice plants, particularly in their root zones, compared with those for plants grown with traditional rice cultivation practices SRI is a system, rather than a technology because it is not a fixed set of practices. While a number of specific practices are associated with SRI, these should always be tested and adapted according to local conditions rather than simply adopted Improved phenotypes from a given genotype already seen in >55 countries Background
  • 4. Six Elements of SRI Background
  • 5. The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) recommends keeping rice field soils moist but unflooded during the crop’s vegetative stage, with alternate wetting and drying up to panicle initiation; then maintaining shallow flooding (1-2 cm) of the field during the post-vegetative stage of crop growth. No evidence-based evaluation is available on the impact of flooding paddy-fields continuously vs. alternately during post-vegetative stage under SRI management, and how this could influence the crops’ physiology, their root growth, grain yield, and water productivity. This research was undertaken to see if further reductions in water consumption could be introduced in SRI rice production without sacrificing attainable yield. Problemaddressed

  • 15. Take-home points • SRI method improves morphological features and physiological performances of rice crop. • SRI crops are able to achieve greater grain yield even with reduced applications of water due to their more vigorous root growth, greater root activity, delayed leaf senescence, higher photosynthetic rate, and greater rate of grain-filling compared with conventionally-managed rice crops. • Water productivity can be enhanced by about 90% when using the suite of practices that constitute SRI. In our trials, these methods reached a productivity of 6.3 kg rice ha-mm-1 compared to 3.3 kg rice ha-mm-1 with CMP. Under SRI management, there was a 58% enhancement of yield with 16% less irrigation water. Six-fold reduction in the number of plants m-2 under SRI
  • 16. • With SRI: global resources are managed more efficiently (less seed and less water produce more food) • Studies on enhancing SRI yield and water productivity further using other water-saving irrigation methods like drip or sprinkler systems should also be investigated. • Possibly together with SRI management, new irrigation technology could be made further more productive in terms of their use of land, labor and (especially) water. SRI lowers GHG emissions and global warming potential; crops are more climate-resilient; in most situations, also less labor requirement; crops are more stress tolerant; production is more sustainable, etc. Take home points
