Space Radiation Superconductive Shield (SR2S) is an EU funded FP7 project which is researching new technology to protect astronauts in space from radiation. On 9th April 2014 in Torino, Italy, SR2S held their first conference to give an update on the project so far.

NASA's Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft observed this fast-moving coronal mass ejection on July 23, 2012.
We are protected by about 1 kg / cm2 on earth by our atmosphere. Shielding by the magnetic field only in about equatorial orbits.
Capability to break chemical bonds is proportional to the square of atomic charge therefore Fe (26) makes 676 x more damage than a proton.
Every year 1/3 of astronauts DNA would be damaged by GCR.
Friedberg calculated for Mars travel about 80 Rem/y = 0.8 Sv/y vs 0.05 Sv/y for nuclear plant workers, 0.5 Sv/y for astronauts in LEO
