7. Learning through Interactive Voice Educational System(LIVES,
A UBC & COL project)
Goal of LIVES is to provide low literate and even
illiterate people in developing countries with
– An asynchronous learning tool based on auditory cues
utilizing the existing telephony/mobile infrastructure
– Easy-to-use Learning Management System & Learning
Content Management System
8. LIVES is a set of optimized computers equipped
with specially designed software and hardware to
deliver educational material over the phone.
Each of LIVES components were decided to be designed
with certain goals in mind, including:
1. Ability to provide pre-recorded learning material
to specific groups of people at specific times in
specific ways. 2. Asynchronous: students can learn at
their preferred time.
3. Bidirectional: students can answer to the questions
and system can respond instantly. 4. Does not require
students to purchase special equipments. 5. Ability to
track user progress.
9. Rumana: A success story due to institutional support
& innovations in communication technologies!
11. Rumana Uses JAWS software
• JAWS (Job Access With Speech) converts your
computer into a talking computer. It reads out
all the matter that is on the computer’s screen
through your computer’s speakers/
headphones, thus enabling a visually
challenged person to use the computer
independently and work on all MS Windows
applications.
15. Worthwhile Knowledge is the destination
NO MATTER HOW WE GET IT OR MAKE IT
as President Abul Kalam has said:
Beauty of knowledge is in it’s usefulness, not in the mode of transportation
16. Educating is a way of loving others
Most importantly, we must
love humans irrespective of
who they are, where they are,
and make education available
to them in every possible
way. It is everyone’s life long
right. We just need to extend
our hands very far with love
to celebrate all our lives
together! Open and distance
learning, if flexible, can
empower our extended hands
far beyond our imaginations.
