2. INTRODUCTION
Why are we going to discuss about this concept??
As a mechanical and civil engineer, we always work with
machines under Structural loads or we will be going to design
construction with different types of supports and beams. This
is a basic concept for an engineer to be aware of to do all such
things. By the end of this concept we are expecting a student
will be capable to identify all the supports, beans and loads.
4. Point Load
• When a load acts concentrated at
a definite point then it is named
as a concentrated load or point
load. We can see some best
examples of point load in the
below figures.
5. UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED LOAD
• A distributed load is a load
which is spread on some length
of a beam, i.e. The reason it is
measured in intensity with units
Newton/Meter.
• If the intensity is constant along
the length then it is named as
UDL.
6. UNIFORMLY VARYING LOAD
• A distributed load is a load which is
spread on some length of a beam, i.e.
The reason it is measured in
intensity with units Newton/Meter.
• If the intensity is constant along the
length then it is named as UDL.
7. Types of Beams
•Fixed Beam
•Cantilever Beams
•Beam with one end hinged and the other end roller
•Simply Supported Beams
•Over Hanging Beams
•Continuous Beam
8. Fixed Beam
• A Beam which is having fixed supports
on the both of its ends, it is named as
fixed beams and we can see some
animated and real examples of these
kind of beams and how they restricting
the movement of the beam.
9. CANTILEVER BEAM
•A Beam which having a
fixed support on end other
end is set free, it is known
as cantilever beam
10. BEAM WITH ONE END HINGED &
OTHER END ROLLER
•This beam has one of its end hinged and the other side of
the is supported with roller.
•These kind of beams are capable to withstand loads in any
direction.
11. SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM
•A beam with simple support exactly at two ends of the
beam then is called as simply supported beam.
12. OVER HANGING BEAM
• THESE BEAM WILL ALSO HAVE SUPPORTS BUT ONE END
OR BOTH END OF THE BEAM WILL HAVING SOME
EXTENSION AFTER THE SUPPORT
17. ROLLER SUPPORT
•A roller support gives capability of movement to the
respected beam connected to it may be along normal
guides or it can also rotate about the support.
18. HINGED SUPPORT
• A hinged support restricts the movement of the beam in any
direction but it will allow the beam to rotate about the support just
like a door.
19. SUPPORT REACTION CALCULATION
To explain support reaction calculation
• We took an example,
• Find the reaction at the support of the following beam.
20. Solution,
∑Mc =0
Clockwise moments = Anti clock wise moments
R1 x 6 = 1000×3 + (200×3)3/2 = 3600
6R1 = 3000 + 900 = 3900
R1 = 3900/6 = 650 kg.
R1 = 650 kg
21. For calculating R2 i.e. reaction at point C,
Total vertical force=∑FV =0
R1 + R2 = 600 + 200×4
1300 + R2 = 1400
R2 = 1400 + 1300
R2 = 100 kg
Therefore,
R1=650kg
R2=100kg
