The carotid artery supplies blood to the head and neck. Atherosclerotic plaque is a build-up of fatty deposits in the walls of arteries. This plaque narrows the carotid artery and can increase the risk of stroke if a piece of plaque breaks off and blocks blood flow to the brain.
