SharePoint Online Readiness
Checklist will be available after
the webinar.
Please jump in and submit questions on the chat window! I need to keep pace on the webinar but if I can’t answer it during the session I will email you afterwards. I have a team member on the call tracking all of the questions for me. I would love to hear from you!
Push it all to the cloud! That’s all we heard for a while, not just from Microsoft but from many vendors. Strong argument for moving to SharePoint Online.
Keep your data secure! This is what we hear from organizations, concern about keeping information safe. If it’s hosted by Microsoft – who has access? How do I know its secure?
Bring the cloud to your business! hybrid environments and the reality that we really need the best of both worlds.
Where do I start trying to find answers to all of these questions?
You want to start by documenting what’s important to you as an organization. So as I walk through the pros and cons of our options here – I want you all to take note of which of these points are important for YOU specifically. This will help you fill out your SharePoint Online readiness assessment that you will receive at the end of this webinar!
Lets start here –
FYI – a lot of really good developers are not yet comfortable with the app model and it will take anyone twice as long to develop an app as it would to do the same work on-premises
This is not as simple as just saying “we’re going to do a hybrid configuration” – there are actually options for within Hybrid as well…..
MySites redirection and Yammer integration are more basic Hybrid configurations and can be configured in SharePoint relatively quickly. They do require directory sync but do not require ADFS or Single Sign on. In any hybrid scenario, single sign on is nice so your users do not have additional authentication prompts.
Standard scenario where users want to search both environments in one place
Suppose you are using your on-premises environment to crawl your file share – you can crawl that file share and supply those file to SharePoint Online to be viewed!
This means, you could potentially setup a SharePoint On-Premises environment, specifically for that purpose.
A reverse proxy is required (only 3 show on the Microsoft site – look these up)
If you are hoping to supply SharePoint Online with search results that include file share documents, you need to publish your entire fire share through the reverse proxy!!
Directory sync is required between AD on-premises and your Office 365 environment
Microsoft will tell you that ADFS + SSO are not required. But there are a few BUTS there….
If you use the built in web application proxy (reverse proxy built into Windows Server 2012), so actually DO need ADFS
Even if you don’t use the Web App Proxy, It will still prompt the users to log in again when they open a document from the file share
If this sounds like a bunch of work – there are other options for hybrid environments! But what if…..what if it could be even better? What about real integration? Movement of content between environments?
I don’t want this to be too much of a sales pitch, but I’m so excited about the possibilities here I had to put a plug in for our workflow vendor K2…..
Create workflows in both without paying for two separate tools.
K2 provides applications for forms and workflow available both on-premises and in SharePoint Online.
On-premises, K2 BlackPearl sits independent of SharePoint and can connect integrate data from different line of business systems in your organization.
Online, the forms and workflow apps are SharePoint specific and is called AppIt.
