Before we start, we first have to ask, what is music?
Music means different things to different people. To me, music is…
…what feelings sound like.
…speaks where words fail…
…and inspires the soul.
Anyone can make a connection through music. You don’t have to be a musician to feel or appreciate it.
My name is Ryland Underwood and I am a musician, songwriter, and music production student at Full Sail University.
I was born with a passion for music. At 3 days old, I would bounce my foot in time with the radio. If the station or song changed, my foot would skip a beat to get back in time with the music.
However, I didn’t become a musician until I was 10 years old. At that time, I lived in New Orleans with my family and decided to pick up the trumpet.
By the time I turned 18, I had played all brass instruments, taught myself drums and percussion, learned some piano, and picked up guitar.
I had even directed a church choir in a Christmas musical.
Not this one.
After graduating high school, I enlisted in the Marine Corps where I served as a network administrator/computer technician and was honorably discharged in 2003 after 5 years of active duty service.
Also in 2003, I decided to start playing bass.
I spent the next 7 years touring as the bassist/backing vocalist for Souls Harbor and helped write and record 3 EPs and 2 LPs.
I left the band in 2010 to pursue my own interests.
In 2012 I enrolled in Full Sail University’s online Music Production Bachelor of Science degree program.
At Full Sail, I became proficient in using recording software such as Pro Tools and Logic Pro. I also studied songwriting, game and film scoring, sonic branding and sound design.
I currently play bass every week for the Charleston, SC campus of Newspring Church.
It is my goal to have a successful career as a songwriter for a music publishing company, record label, or churches.....
.... and to one day build a recording studio and launch a record label of my own.
So why pick me over everyone else?
Because I am passionate about using the language of music to speak to the soul.
I was born with a gift for music.
And because I’m innovating passion in music production.
Success is making a personal connection through music.
