7. Unconscious Bias
• “Unconscious bias affects every area of our lives. Unconsciously, we tend
to like people who look like us, think like us and come from backgrounds
similar to ours. Everyone likes to think he or she is open-minded and
objective, but research has shown that the beliefs and values gained from
family, culture and a lifetime of experiences heavily influence how we view
and evaluate both others and ourselves.
• These thought patterns, assumptions and interpretations – or biases – we
have built up over time help us to process information quickly and
efficiently. From a survival standpoint, bias is a positive and necessary
trait. In business, however, bias can be costly. It can cause us to make
decisions that are not objective; and ultimately we miss opportunities.”

Love that song. Where we have been, as I shall discuss, is important BUT where you are going is what you can influence NOW!
Where have I been? It is not so obvious because I did not match the objective criteria to do what I do today.
I was VEX that I had to go for this interview. I had an affro – I know it’s hard to believe now that I good even have grown one. INTERVIEW was not great. All I could think of was MJ’s album. I got the job. On reflection I think the interviewer felt sorry for me because of my ‘toothache’. Once I got that job, though, I ‘seized the moment’ and made the best of the ‘opportunity’

How many times have we heard these words. How many times have we been on the receiving end of negative words? I can say it has been said to me many times before. The surprising thing in my case was I heard those mainly from my friends and WORST from those who had no experience of where I wanted to go. Christine Lagarde was once warned by a reputable firm in France that she would never make partner because of her gender. She went on
