COLOURS
IN INTERIOR DESIGN
WHAT ARE COLOURS
IN INTERIOR DESIGN?
•There are three key questions to be asked while working
with colours in interior spaces:
• WHAT ?
• WHO ?
• WHERE ?
•WHAT is the function/purpose/use of the space you are
choosing colour for?
•WHO is the end user of the space you are choosing
colour for?
•WHERE is the location of the space you are choosing
colour for?
Colors are a form of non verbal
communication
• Color is a powerful design tool that can make the rooms
in your home feel more calm, cheerful, comfortable or
dramatic.
• Color is a least expensive way to transform your
environment.
• They relate respectively to the mind, the body, the
emotions and the essential balance between these
three.
WHERE DOES COLOR COME FROM ?
• Color simply comes from light. Sunlight of course is the main
source that that we are all familiar with.
• When light from the sun passes through a prism, the light is split
into the seven visible colors by a process called 'refraction'.

WHAT ARE THE NATURE OF
COLORS?
• Colour therapy aims to
balance and enhance our
body’s energy centers/
chakras by using the
seven colours of the light
spectrum, which can help
to stimulate our body’s
own healing process. Each
of the seven main colours
of the spectrum resonates
with one of the main seven
chakras.

DOES BRAIN
REACT TO
COLOURS?
Our brain react to color by
releasing different
chemicals that affect us
both emotionally and
physically.
So Colors has been proven
to evoke specific physical
and psychological
responses within our
bodies
MOODS
COLOUR AND HUMAN
• Colours in design are very subjective.
• What evokes one reaction in one person may evoke a very different
reaction in somone else.
• Sometimes this is due to personal preference, and other times due
to cultural background.
• Colors affect different people, either individually or as a group.
• Color is one of those elements we start to associate with memories
from an early age.
• When babies are very young (1-2 months) they usually can only see
blurry contrasting shapes often in white, black, grey, and red.
• Brightness is a major factor for their toys, because they actually
cannot focus on subtle neutrals and pale shades easily.
• This is why culturally baby’s have rooms in pastel colors. The objects
they need to focus on become more visible in contrast against the
walls thus strengthening their eyes.
• It would not be wise to paint a baby’s room red ,making it harder to
focus on other bright colored objects.
• Studies have also shown that babies cry more in yellow rooms
because it over stimulates the emotional drive for energy.
• No two people see color in exactly the same way; our eyes are all
slightly different .
WARM COLORS
• Raise the perceived temperature of a room
• For, this reason, they are best used in rooms facing NORTH.
• They build energy and fight depression.
• As these colors inspire activities, avoid them in rooms that are meant
for relaxation, like bedroom.
• Best for cold climatic regions.
• The positive aspects of this are a closer, cozier feeling environment. If
you have a large space that lacks an intimate appeal, consider using
colors from this part of the spectrum.
• Best for gym and aerobic spaces.
• They speed up circulation.
COOL COLOURS
 The hues on the cool side of the color wheel
tend to recede visually suggesting a more airy,
open environment.
 Cold colors have a calming effects.
 Best for relaxation spaces.
 Avoid them in cold climatic regions or a room
that receives little natural light as it makes
occupants feel cold.
 Ex- A pastel blue that looks pretty but appears
unpleasantly chilly.
 It helps small space look larger than actual.
LIGHT COLOURS
• Lighter tones are more reflective and are interpreted as moving
away from us. They give us illusion of more space.
• Applying a vibrant colour to a wall preceded by light coloured walls
will create the illusion of a wider room.
DARK/BRIGHT COLOURS
• Deeper, darker colors tones reflect less light and appear closes to us.
This give us illusion of less space.
• Using bright colors like orange and especially yellow, they reflect more
light and excessively stimulate a person’s eyes which can lead to
irritation.
COLOURS ACCORING TO VASTU SHASTRA
RED
• Stimulates energy, passion and evokes
strong emotions.
• Symbol of youthfulness which makes it a
favorite for the youngsters.
• Encourages action, confidence and appetite.
• It makes people lose track of time.
• It is elegant and add lots of characteristic in
both traditional and contemporary designs.
• It has a tendency to stimulate mind and
attract attention so helps to focus.
• Have a constricting and gloomy effect.
• It raises the energy level of room.
• So red should not be used as main color.
• Sitting for long in red will affect the peace
and harmony, you are striving to create in
your home.
• Create an atmosphere of work and meditation
• Navy blue known as intellectual color it tends
to affect us mentally by stimulating thoughts
,communicate and concentrate
• Enhances creativity .
• Bring down the blood pressure, heart rate and
slow respiration.
• Blue color makes eating very unappealing
people loss appetite , studies revealed that
meals taken in blue rooms consume 3times
less calories than in rooms painted red or
yellow.
• You can use blue to cool a room with much
sun and heat.
BLUE
GREEN
• It is mixture of blue and yellow so have the
power of both, fresh quality of blue and
cheerfulness of yellow.
• Green color is associated with health and
prosperity.
• Green is relaxing color and can improve
vision it is said less stressfull on eye muscles
causing soothing, and restfull effects on the
eyes.
• Olive and sage green seems to be appealing
because of their neutral character and Olive
green is the traditional color of peace.
• Aqua green is associated with emotional
healing and protection.
• Suited for any room in the house.
• Relaxing mentally as well as physically
• Green stimulates creativity
YELLOW
• Yellow holds energy and warmth.
• Considered as emotional color , it evokes
optimism and confidence in certain hues.
• Lighter tints of yellow looks clean and fresh,
energizing and uplifting..
• Buttery shades are easier to live with long term
than bright sunflower yellow.
• Bright Yellow tends to cause more eye fatigue
than any other color.
• Makes people stay less at the place.
• In its pure form yellow can be overwhelming.
• Studies have also shown that babies cry more in
yellow rooms because it over stimulates the
emotional drive for energy.
PURPLE
• Purple is a mixture of red and blue and so
combines power of both the power of red and
the calmness of blue.
• Rich , dramatic, Spirituality and sophisticated.
• Historically, purple is the color of king and so it
is the color considered for luxury, royalty and
power.
• Results in loss of appetite.
• Good as an Accent or secondary color.
• Lighter version of purple such as lavender and
lilac bring the same restful quality as of blue,
without the risk of feeling chilly.
• Reddish shades attract more attention and
dominate the room..
ORANGE
• Combination of red and yellow so have
power of both the colors.
• It is energetic color and stimulates
creativity.
• Orange is associated with vitality,
activity, happiness and adventure in
color psychology.

• Relates to meditation and higher self.
• It stimulates mental abilities.

NEUTRAL
• A neutral color gray will appear warm
on a blue (cool) background and cool
when on a red (warm) background.
• Creates a sense of restful emptiness.
• Sophistication.
• Gray interior give a formality that is
subtle elegance without being too
conservative.
• Do not use too much black, but only to
highlight certain things like picture
frames, small tables, etc.
• So use black on a light or neutral
background color, everything which is
black will stand out
CEILING
• Ceiling represents one -sixth of
the space in the room, but too
often gets nothing more than a
coat of white paint.
• Ceiling that are light painted than
the walls feel higher, while those
painter darker feel lower, and so
, for decades, celing are painted
in the white paints.
COLOUR AND LIGHT
• Without light, there is no color.
• Surfaces reflect and absorb light differently, which results in the colors
we see through our eyes.
• Each colour has its own properties and unique wavelength and
frequency
• There are 2 main sources of light that create the colors we see: the
sun and lightbulbs.
• Many factors affect how interior paint colors are perceived, but the two
most common are light .
• Sunlight, artificial light, shadows, surface texture and even reflections
from other surfaces all affect colors on interior painted walls.
• Color looks different throughout the day and through the seasons.
• Sunlight is the purest light and provides the purest color from the
spectrum.
• But sunlight changes over time. As the day progresses and the earth
rotates, the intensity of the light changes and you'll observe changes
in the appearance of color.
Colours and Indoor
Landscape
CONCLUSION
• When selecting a paint color and decorating a space, "it's all about
balancing the type of lighting, gloss level and the impact of other colors
in the space.
• The appropriate interplay of a color's temperature and tonal value will
help you achieve the feel you are aiming for in your space.
• Colour is used to create focal point, and add personality to your space.
• When decorating a space, the colours red, blue, yellow, and green can
be used to restore people’s health as these colours relate
correspondingly to the body, mind and emotions.
• Whether colour is used to encourage healing or to enhance use of a
space, colour therapy can be exceptionally powerful.
• In both residential and commercial environments, color matters. It can
improve mood, increase productivity, make a room seem bigger or
smaller, reduce the negative effects of glare or low lighting, promote
socialization, lower or raise blood pressure, boost energy, increase
appetite, improve concentration, and even reduce negative behavior.
• Colors plays a significant role in how people respond to time spent in a
particular area or space. This response to color directly correlates
with a person’s comfort and well-being.
AIM OF INTERIOR DESIGNER
• Create a environment for the betterment of the inhabitants by
choosing proper colors.
• Choose color for a particular activity in the given space
balancing the surrounding without disturbing harmony.

  • 22. COLOUR AND HUMAN • Colours in design are very subjective. • What evokes one reaction in one person may evoke a very different reaction in somone else. • Sometimes this is due to personal preference, and other times due to cultural background. • Colors affect different people, either individually or as a group. • Color is one of those elements we start to associate with memories from an early age. • When babies are very young (1-2 months) they usually can only see blurry contrasting shapes often in white, black, grey, and red.
  • 23. • Brightness is a major factor for their toys, because they actually cannot focus on subtle neutrals and pale shades easily. • This is why culturally baby’s have rooms in pastel colors. The objects they need to focus on become more visible in contrast against the walls thus strengthening their eyes. • It would not be wise to paint a baby’s room red ,making it harder to focus on other bright colored objects. • Studies have also shown that babies cry more in yellow rooms because it over stimulates the emotional drive for energy. • No two people see color in exactly the same way; our eyes are all slightly different .
  • 24. WARM COLORS • Raise the perceived temperature of a room • For, this reason, they are best used in rooms facing NORTH. • They build energy and fight depression. • As these colors inspire activities, avoid them in rooms that are meant for relaxation, like bedroom. • Best for cold climatic regions. • The positive aspects of this are a closer, cozier feeling environment. If you have a large space that lacks an intimate appeal, consider using colors from this part of the spectrum. • Best for gym and aerobic spaces. • They speed up circulation.
  • 25. COOL COLOURS  The hues on the cool side of the color wheel tend to recede visually suggesting a more airy, open environment.  Cold colors have a calming effects.  Best for relaxation spaces.  Avoid them in cold climatic regions or a room that receives little natural light as it makes occupants feel cold.  Ex- A pastel blue that looks pretty but appears unpleasantly chilly.  It helps small space look larger than actual.
  • 26. LIGHT COLOURS • Lighter tones are more reflective and are interpreted as moving away from us. They give us illusion of more space. • Applying a vibrant colour to a wall preceded by light coloured walls will create the illusion of a wider room.
  • 27. DARK/BRIGHT COLOURS • Deeper, darker colors tones reflect less light and appear closes to us. This give us illusion of less space. • Using bright colors like orange and especially yellow, they reflect more light and excessively stimulate a person’s eyes which can lead to irritation.
