WelcomeSpeaker introWhat we’re covering today
We’re talking about plumbingBoring and fundamentalVastly importantFoundation upon which everything is builtOur industry has been stagnant for year, I contend that outdated plumbing was major cause
what is tin can---spec overview------replacement for SCORM------emerging, but very rapid adoption------learning solutions anecdote------1.0 about in April 2013------xApivs TCAPIBuilt on modern technology with very flexible and powerful structureOpening up the box SCORM confined us toOne takeaway – start from scratch in re-imagining your learning programs
Pretty much any experience can now be tracked via a system or application that is integrated with the Tin Can API.
Tin Can gives us a very flexible and powerful model for capturing learning activity data.‘I Did This’ is a very simple example of a Tin Can statement. Actor Verb ObjectLet’s run through a few examples:Andy presented a Tin Can API webinarAndy attended an e-learning conferenceAndy resuscitated a CPR dummyAndy completed Risk Assessment on steeluniversity.orgAndy closed a sales opportunity worth $30,000.These are the types of statements that can now be generated and shared via the Tin Can API.
Many implications to what Tin Can enablesUse a layers of the onion analogy to dive into themFirst layer, things that are interesting on the surfaceNow we’re not limited to a static e-learning course. Many new training delivery modalities
This, in and of itself, enables a ton of new stuff to be tracked.Other interesting implicationsMore robust trackingLaunch outside the LMSSecure trackingNo cross domain issues Much simpler – fewer compatibility problemsMultiple learners / team based training / instructorNo limits on amount of data to captureCapture content usage data
How much of what you’ve learned in your lifetime comes from an e-learning course? It’s a trivial amount.Learning happens everywhere, now we can track it.Both in the real world and in the virtual world.Comprehensive picture of a person as a learner
Learning Record Store (LRS) – new concept, gaining traction as a new class of enterprise learning softwareTin Can is inherently openData that comes in can also go outData is also portable across systems, but within an organization and across organizationsLots of implications for how we design learning systems and look at learning’s role in the organization
This is the exciting part, just beginning to exploreHoly grailKirkpatrick levels 3&4 become much easier to implementThis is where the really interesting parts of Tin Can come in
Transition to talk about Tin Can’s impact on learning systemsThis is our corporate view of learningWhat percentage of what you’ve learned in your life comes from an e-learning course in your LMS? <1%?
Blogs, articles, youtube, schools, seminars, conferences, peers, booksThis learning happens, it is the majority of how/where people learn, but we don’t have any visibility into it, we don’t track itLearning happens at the point of need, in many contextsWhat good is a learning system if it only captures a miniscule fraction of what we’re learning
Our learning systems do many things, but few of them are best of breedTwo core pieces provide most of the utility of the LMS – 80/20 rule
Now we can pull out just those good parts.Open systems allow us a lot more flexibility.all the other junk in an LMS can be best of breed components bolted onInherently open for integration with HR Systems, Business Intelligence Systems, Reporting SystemsEver wanted to just mix and match parts of different LMS’s and systems? We’re starting to be able to do that.Is there a better social network than what is in your LMS? What about content management system? What about reporting? Search? Industry specific regulatory management?tin can is inherently opendata that goes into the LRS can be read by any other system through an open protocolwe going to see an explosion of tools capable of interacting with this data
This is what we’re starting to see.LRS acts as central clearing house of learning data, but serves a much broader purposeLearning data on its own is only marginally interesting, much more interesting when combined with data from other systems.
The next logical leap: the personal data locker (PDL)A learner owns all his/her own data from many sources, stored in a Personal Data Locker
Transition: state of the industry and how to get startedSept 24, 2013State of the industryAdoption happening quickly, but still very earlyTwo camps – existing vendors doing mostly SCORM parity, new vendors with interesting products
We have become believers in the LRS centric architecture and in making learning a strategic functionRight now, we’re focused on pilot projects with organizations who want to implement some of these capabilities. The way to get started is to start small, it’s a big tempting buffet of possibilities, start with a project you can bite offExpect some work and bumps, remember this is still very new technology
Concept for early projects we like to espouse is experiment centered analysis of a pilotDemonstrate that a new delivery mechanism is effective.Show that training a population has an affect on performance.Sky is the limit in things that you can measure and compare with Tin Can
Samples of ways you can track Tin Can data to feed into an experiment
If you’re interested in getting started with Tin Can, email us and we’ll send you a list of 30 ways organizations have started using Tin Can to improve their training programs.I saved some time for questions, we’ve never done one of these presentations that hasn’t led to more questions than we could answer in the available time, so feel free to send over any questions that we didn’t get to.We’re always here to help.
