2. Introduction :
In Bangladesh, different garments factory follow different quality control
and management systems especially different inspection systems for
garment inspection. This article contains the quality control processes as
well as quality management procedures followed by different garment
factory of Bangladesh and the feasibility of these processes.
Garments Inspection:
Garments are assembling of different elements such as fabric, sewing
threads, buttons, trims, etc. The quality of garments depends on proper
inspection of every step of garment production. For maintaining the
required quality level needs to check every step of garment production.
This procedure is known as garments inspection. Garments inspection is
very important for quality garments. In garments industry, there are three
stages of garment inspection.
Various stages of garments inspection are mentioned below:
1. Raw material inspection,
2. In Process Inspection:
A. During production inspection,
B. Finishing inspection,
3. Final inspection.
3. Flow Chart :
Quality control in terms of garment manufacturing, pre-sales and posts
sales service, delivery, pricing, etc are essential for any garment
manufacturer, trader or exporter. Certain quality related problems, should
never be over looked. The consumers want to get high quality products in
low price. The products should reach the consumers with right quality
depends on the cost. Quality management is the aspect of the overall
management function that determines and implements the quality
4. policy. Quality assurance covers all the process within a company that
contributes to the production of quality products.
Systems in garments inspection:
1. Raw Material Inspection:
Pre-Production Inspection: This is done before production starts. It is done to
crosscheck for final verification of Bulk fabric and trims materials, styling cutting
way, manufacturing details and workmanship of the garment or pre-production
sample as per the customer requirement.
a. Fabric Inspection: We all know that, the main raw material of the garment is
fabric. Therefore, raw material inspection is also known as fabric inspection. The
fabric is the main raw material for garment making. So the fabric is inspected very
carefully in the garment industry. Normally 4.0 points system and 10 point system
are used for fabric inspection. The 4.0 point system is used for better quality
fabric and 10 point system is used for comparative poor quality fabric.
b. Sewing threads Inspection :
5. i. Construction
ii. Yarn count
iii. Yarn ply
iv. Number of twists per unit length (TPI or TPM)
v. Twist balance
vi. Yarn strength (tenacity)
vii. Yarn elongation
c. Sew ability
d. Finish
e. Color
f. Yardage
g. Winding
h. Package density
Zipper Inspection:
1. Dimension: Tape width, tape extensions, and overall useable length of
zipper should be as specified.
2. Top and bottom stoppers should be fastened securely.
3. Zipper tape should be uniform in color.
6. 4. Zipper should not cause wrinkling and puckering after sewn into garments
5. Puller or pull tab should be affixed firmly to the slider body.
6. Slider should ride freely but must not be so free that it is loose on the
chain.
7. Slider should be locked securely.
8. Zipper should be perfect and washing and / or dry cleaning and will not
fade.
9. Zipper should not deform under pressing and ironing.
10.Zipper should be well-matched with garments design.
11. Zipper should be AZO-free, nickel free, non-magnetic and nontoxic
painting.
Button Inspection:
1. Button holes should be large, clean, and free from flash, so that it will not
cut the thread.
2. Button holes should be located properly.
3. Button thickness should be uniform.
4. Button shade should be within tolerance.
5. Button should be able to withstand laundering, dry cleaning, and pressing
without any change or deform
6. Button size should be as specified.
7. 7. In case of any special requirements button should have all.
2. In process Inspection:
The inspection, which is carried out before assembling all the component of a
garment is known as in-process inspection. In-process inspection is also known as
online inspection. This is the long inspection process due to whole production
inspection is done in this process. Therefore, online inspection is very important
for garment inspection system.
From the starting point of manufacturing up to garments ready to shipment, the
inspection done is called in process inspection. At least 65 to 80% faults can be
checked and controlled through in process inspection.
1st inline production inspection: This inspection is done at the start of
production when first production output of particular style of garments is
inspected; to distinguish possible discrepancies or variation and to do
necessary corrections to be made bulk production. This type of inspection is
done at a preliminary stage of manufacturing of a style covering mainly
style detail, general appearance, workmanship, measurements, fabric
quality, Trims and components, Lot color, printing, embellishments and
washing quality.
2nd line Production Inspection: This inspection is done during production
to ensure initial discrepancies have been corrected and rectified. This
inspection is a follow-up of the 1 st inline production inspection and is
generally carried out after 1st line inspection when discrepancies have
been detected at that time.
The online inspection is carried in following sections-
Cutting Section
Sewing Section
Finishing Section
In process Inspection includes:
Sewing inspection/defects :
1. Sewing defects
8. 2. Seam defects
3. Assembly defects
4. Finishing inspection /defects
3. Final Inspection:
Final inspection is the inspection system which is carried on a complete garment.
Before this stage, a component of a garment or an incomplete garment is
inspected. So, final inspection is very important from customer point of view. Size
of garments fitting and other defects is inspected during final inspection. There
are various systems for final inspection.
Final Random Inspection:
This inspection is carried out when the production of the total quantity of an
order or partial delivery is completed. A sample lot will be selected from the order
and a percentage of the garments will be inspected, this percentage usually being
stipulated by the buyer. The AQL sampling inspection system as specified by the
buyer. Final inspection consists of inspecting finished garments from the buyer’s
point of view; size measurements, formfitting (putting garments on the proper
size dummy to see if they properly fit labeled sizes) ;and live modeling if
necessary ( again to see if the garments properly fit the labeled sizes ). Final
inspection may occur before or after garments are packed in poly bags and
cartons. If it is done after garments packed, then proper size and style markings
on the package can also be checked.
Following types can be used in the final inspection of garment industry-
1. No Inspection System
2. Hundred Person Inspection System
3. Arbitrary Sampling Plan
4. Acceptance Sampling Plan.
9. Total Acceptable Product (TAP) &Acceptable Quality Limit (AQL):
TAP means the number of acceptable products in a lot. On the other hand, AQL
means maximum acceptable capability or rejected % of products in a lot.
Example:
10,000 dozen T-Shirts have AQL of 4%. Then find out TAP of that lot. Here,
100 dozens T-Shirts have acceptable limit = 4 dozens
1 dozen T-Shirts has acceptable limit = 4/100 dozen
10,000 dozens T-Shirts have acceptable limit = (4/100) * 10,000 dozens
=400 dozens
Therefore,
TAP = (10,000 – 400) dozens.
=9600 dozens .
Conclusion:
The inspection is carried out by representatives of the current production
and the result record on control chart. The aim of garment inspection is to
visually inspect articles at random from a delivery in order to verify their
general conformity and appearance with instruction/description and/or
sample received. Garments inspection is an important term in the readymade
garments sector. Quality inspector is the main in apparel inspection, who
certifies the garments export order, whether it is perfect for shipping or not.
The quality inspector has to ensure perfect quality according to the buyer’s
instruction in various stages of garments inspection, which have been
discussed in this article. Generally in garment industries, inspections are made
1%, 1.5%, 2.5%, 4%, 6.5%, 10%, etc. This depends on the buyer’s requirements.
