2. Smart Energy
PARAGRAPH 1 THE TRANSLATION TO SPANISH
The next few decades will see great changes in the
way energy is supplied and used. In some major oil
producing nations, 'peak oil' has already been reached,
and there are increasing fears of global warming.
Consequently, many countries are focusing on the
switch to a low carbon economy. This transition will
lead to major changes in the supply and use of
electricity. Firstly, there will be an increase in overall
demand, as consumers switch from oil and gas to
electricity to power their homes and vehicles.
Secondly, there will be an increase in power generation,
not only in terms of how much is generated, but also
how it is generated, as there is growing electricity
generation from renewable sources. To meet these
challenges, countries are investing in Smart Grid
technology. This system aims to provide the electricity
industry with a better understanding of power
generation and demand, and to use this information to
create a more efficient power network

Smart Grid technology basically
involves the application of a computer
system to the electricity network. The
computer system can be used to collect
information about supply and demand
and improve engineer's ability to
manage the system. With better
information about electricity demand,
the network will be able to increase the
amount of electricity delivered per unit
generated, leading to potential
reductions in fuel needs and carbon
emissions. Moreover, the computer
system will assist in reducing
operational and maintenance costs
La tecnología de red inteligente
básicamente involucra la aplicación de
un sistema informático a la red eléctrica.
El sistema informático puede ser usado
para recoger información acerca del
suministro, demanda y mejorar las
habilidades de los ingenieros para
manejar el sistema. Con mejor
información acerca de la demanda de la
electricidad, la red podrá ser capaz de
incrementar la cantidad de electricidad
entregada por unidad generada,
conduciendo a la reducción potencial en
las necesidades del combustible y las
emisiones del carbón. Además, el
sistema informático asistirá en reducción
operativa y costos de mantenimiento.

Smart Grid technology offers benefits to
the consumer too. They will be able to
collect real-time information on their energy
use for each appliance. Varying tariffs
throughout the day will give customers the
incentive to use appliances at times when
supply greatly exceeds demand, leading to
great reductions in bills. For example, they
may use their washing machines at night.
Smart meters can also be connected to the
internet or telephone system, allowing
customers to switch appliances on or off
remotely. Furthermore, if houses are fitted
with the apparatus to generate their own
power, appliances can be set to run directly
from the on-site power source, and any
excess can be sold to the grid
La tecnología de red inteligente también
ofrece beneficios al consumidor. Ellos
podrán recopilar información en tiempo real
sobre su uso de energía para cada
dispositivo.

With these changes comes a range of challenges.
The first involves managing the supply and demand.
Sources of renewable energy, such as wind, wave
and solar, are notoriously unpredictable, and nuclear
power, which is also set to increase as nations
switch to alternative energy sources, is inflexible.
With oil and gas, it is relatively simple to increase
the supply of energy to match the increasing demand
during peak times of the day or year. With
alternative sources, this is far more difficult, and
may lead to blackouts or system collapse. Potential
solutions include investigating new and efficient
ways to store energy and encouraging consumers to
use electricity at off-peak times. A second problem
is the fact that many renewable power generation
sources are located in remote areas, such as windy
uplands and coastal regions, where there is currently
a lack of electrical infrastructure. New
infrastructures therefore must be built. Thankfully,
with improved smart technology, this can be done
more efficiently by reducing the reinforcement or
construction costs.

Although Smart Technology is still in its infancy, pilot
schemes to promote and test it are already underway. Consumers
are currently testing the new smart meters which can be used in
their homes to manage electricity use. There are also a number of
demonstrations being planned to show how the smart technology
could practically work, and trials are in place to test the new
electrical infrastructure. It is likely that technology will be added
in 'layers', starting with 'quick win' methods which will provide
initial carbon savings, to be followed by more advanced systems
at a later date. Cities are prime candidates for investment into
smart energy, due to the high population density and high energy
use. It is here where Smart Technology is likely to be promoted
first, utilising a range of sustainable power sources, transport
solutions and an infrastructure for charging electrically powered
vehicles. The infrastructure is already changing fast. By the year
2050, changes in the energy supply will have transformed our
homes, our roads and our behaviour
nuestros hogares, nuestras carreteras y nuestro comportamiento.

7. TASK 2. REFLECTION
Maiden Julieth Sánchez Fajardo
Write a text about the problems you faced regarding words or expressions that
were hard to translate and an explanation of the techniques used to get the
results. Relate the text to the contents of the course.
After Choose the paragraph that I am going to translate, I start the translate using
the Direct translation Techniques as Literal translation technique, that consisting
in translate word per word, initially, it was easy because I know several words.
The problem arose when some words when translating them into Spanish had
several meanings. So, the sentence was incoherent, so had to search the most
appropriate meaning to understand it.
For example Smart means intelligent, grid means squares, networks, trunk, jalopy.
Then, if I translate smart grid technology would mean “Tecnologia de cuadrícula
intelígente” in Spanish. In this case, I searched the appropriate meaning and
finally I translated as “Tecnologiía de red Inteligente”.
For the other hand, the computer means “computadora” and system means
“Sistema” in Spanish. So, in Spanish, would means “ Sistema de la computadora”.
For me, the sentence will be incoherent. Then, the correct translation would
“ Sistema informatico
8. It was difficult the truth, because the grammar issue is complicated, I know it is important to
be a precise translator but I like the idea of being an interpreting translator since he does his
work facing the public, so they are professionals accustomed to facing all kinds of situations,
It has the advantage of having fun, being creative while translating, because it is not a precise
translation it can give literary and immediate translation. I know that to be this type of
translator I have to have a thorough understanding of the language of origin and destination
with which I will work, as well as the knowledge and ability to adapt, intuition and reaction,
to be able to interpret and translate what is being heard in real time. I know that a translator
also needs to have a deep knowledge of the source language, the target language of the
documents they work with, as well as perfect spelling. It also has a reading ability, revision
correction and editing of detailed texts. In short, the translator must convey the client's
message in an impeccable manner and with the right words to the public they wish to contact.
Actually interpreting was the translation method that you use. Since I started translating the
words I know, as well as giving continuity of the generalized English goals and then
substantive looking at the articles and connectors. Taking into account these aspects I started
to give a simultaneous translation of the text and I was forming the translation by phrases, use
the English to Spanish dictionary as there are many words that I do not know, as well as
check on the Internet how you could connect them, as they read and translated if I added
gerunds, pass in the past and in question, I formed them in some sentences to memorize them
and have them present in my daily speech, with this practice of translation I can conclude that
I have difficulty learning all aspects of English, I find it difficult to read, translate, write, and
I have better knowledge of vocabulary.
Laura Yised Muñoz
9. It was a difficult translation, because it focused on a vocabulary
specific in this case in the technology and look much new
vocabulary such as: appliances, bills and used the dictionary to
know its meaning, and there are many meanings in the word and I
think there is a use appropriate in terms of collocations and is an
important topic regarding the use of language likewise adverbs
such as: at times, throughout, etc. that also gave him a different
meaning to translate it, this activity I seemed very significant,
which help us every day to improve our learning of a second
language, also were in the role of a translator that we remember
that is to interpret written texts.
Santiago Andres Ardila
10. The words and expressions that were difficult to translate for me were the
following:
Range: Because he knows it as distance and use it as a noun was a bit difficult.
Involves: No so much for the meaning in Spanish but rather for finding the
correct coherence of the phrase
Nuclear power: In the literal translation there would be no coherence in the
sentence, so I had to find another word to make it work
The techniques used for the translation were the following:
Literal translation for phrases such as:
With these changes comes a range of challenges: Con estos cambios viene una
serie de desafíos
Potential solutions include investigating new and efficient ways to store energy
and encouraging consumers to use electricity: Las posibles soluciones incluyen
investigar formas nuevas y eficientes de almacenar energía y alentar a los
consumidores a usar la electricidad
Transposition for phrases such as:
at off-peak times: en horas de poca actividad
power generation sources: fuentes de generación de energía
with improved smart technology: con una tecnología inteligente mejorada
by reducing the reinforcement or construction costs: al reducir los costos de
refuerzo o construcción.
Yulissa Alejandra Vejarano
11. In this process, to the first moment, it seems easy, through my
knowledge of English language I did can understand the text. But,
when I did need to pass to Spanish languages that was not the same.
When I find the word “supplied” and translate it to Spanish, I did need
to choose between three different words that have a similar meaning
and look for the best option that can give me the best context.
The same situation I did need to do that with many words, so I used
the compensation technique. Then, I did need to do
some modulation over sentences, an example was “'peak oil' has
already been reached” for can offer the best context in the sentence to
text.
I used the dictionary and check many times for can see if the text was
well translated. For that reason I did can conclude that be a good
translator do not is easy because my task was a short paragraph and I
did spend a long time doing the translation. Now, I know that I need to
learn a lot more vocabulary and study the English culture for can
improve in the translation fie .
Rubiela Saavedra Correa
12. Task 3: Chart.
Concept Example
Method:
Correspond to the way or literary intention from
the translator, how need to do the translation
knowing the context of the text and the future
readers characteristic.
Word-for-word translation: is carried the
meaning of each word from one language to other
without consider logical or context.
Communicative: occur when the translator try to
communicate the message to the reader the most
exactly possible doing an idiomatic mediation
between languages.
Strategy:
Is a thinking process where the translator decide
which steps will be needed for can achieve the
goals, and there are global or specific strategies.
Global: pick up the whole text, what activities
will do the translator for translate it. ( to choose a
line or method of translation)
Specific: adopt one or other action for solving
littles problem inside the tex. (To choose x or y
technique according to the necessity).
Technique:
Translation resource that the translator use for can
solving a particular circumstance inside the text
and it can offer a language connection from one
language to another.
Modulation:
Same idea but different phrase.
Compensation: when one word do not have an
equivalent mean between language, and is
necessary to replace this word for other that could
offer a similar communicative meaning inside the
context.By Rubiela Saavedra
17. Task 3: Chart.
By Laura Muñoz
CONCEPTS EXAMPLES
Method: read the text to know what I understand, what
category is the text and reading continuity, to reach an
understanding of it.
This is the paragraph that is most understood and I had the
idea that it is a text that we intend to translate: There are
also a number of demonstrations being planned to show
how the smart technology could practically work, and trials
are in place to test the new electrical infrastructure.
Strategy: Use many translation strategies and take the
words known and unknown, I made a list of them, to form
some sentences, and can memorize them.
Currently, schemes, underway, could, trials, being, planned,
utilising a range, density, carbon savings, layers, starting,
quick, high, charging. among other.
Technique: I guided myself with the technique of literal and
direct translation, investigative consultation, because I
translated words such as context. Giving the same meaning,
not changing the order of words or the idea that the text
attaches to the reader.
Giving translation to words, phrases to give length of the
text, but I also set myself the goal of understanding by
context, to achieve the understanding of the text in general

I think that you did take the author definitions,
and that’s correct of course. But that did not
express your own understanding over those
differences.
From my point of view, excellent concept
definition, but the examples need to have
a relationship with the field that we study.
In this case the translation process.
I did read in your comparative chart an explanation of
each step that you did for to do your work (translate the
text), but there is missing to say the “differences” that
you find between the three concepts as a guide say

like you think that seeing the paragraph that each one chose apparently seems easy,
but in reality it is not. In my case I chose a short paragraph and at the beginning I
said it looks easy. But when I start to translate it I notice that there are some
difficulties. Like you, I had to choose some words so that the sentence I was
translating had a coherent and adequate meaning. Really translating is not easy and
it takes time.
For Other hand, your concepts are clear, and your examples I help to understand
better.
I am surprised by the way you remember the importance of accurate translation, and
what are the advantages and disadvantages we have when translating a language in
real time. On the other hand, there are many aspects that we must take into account
when translating, in addition to the way in which each one interprets and the
methods or strategies that are used.
Your final chart helped me to understand some concepts that were not clear to me.
Excellent work Lau.
Dear Santy, I loved your work! I think you mention many important aspects in
your reflection and that as students of the English language it is important and
fundamental that in addition to translating texts we learn to interpret them. On the

language since we learned new vocabulary and to handle different techniques,
methods and strategies.

group has had difficulties in our learning process and in this case in the
translation process. On the other hand, you looked for the way to translate the
paragraph in a coherent and appropriate way looking for cohesion between
phrases or sentences. In addition, to using several techniques for translation.
I would like to make a suggestion of your activity, in task 3: chart you should
focus on the readings of the unit and try to make the definitions and
differences belong to the translation and not to other areas. I think you got
confused and you did not understand this point. For example, in the method,
you must define what is the method of translation and give examples of
translation methods such as word for word translation, literal translation, or
semantic translation, etc. In the same way for strategies and techniques.

Hello Maiden
When one is reading a text in English we already have an idea, we understand
what it is about but when there is a paragraph or some reading where we look
at new vocabulary one will think that it is to translate and to continue reading
but the words have many meanings and change the text completely , that is
why it is important to analyze the context of the sentence and choose the
correct word and I believe that we all passed, this exercise allowed us to
analyze how important reading is to read more to learn more vocabulary to
investigate new words and add them to our conversations .
Hello Rubiela
I think we all go through a similar situation translating with our knowledge, but
when we look at a different word, we take it as something easy because it is only
searching for meaning and continuing to translate, but when we come across a
word and its various meanings, we have to use the correct word , the same
happens with adverbs, it changes a lot in translation, although it is important to
emphasize that it is not bad to translate as far as our knowledge is concerned, but
there is a moment when we must think in English to interpret the context.
Hello Laura
I congratulate you for your work, I also think it is important to mention
the role of an interpetrator since they are differentiated with a translator
which is the one we are focusing on, however you mentioned their
characteristics and as you say it is not an easy job and it is important to
have a Advanced knowledge to be able to interpret and be able to have
all those advantages and also a translator is one that makes the reader
of the translation feel the same as the reader of the original text.

I think your explanation of how to carry out the translation is very
good, it is very important to know that it is used in every situation,
I think that its modulation process is ideal, since it is a complicated
technique but it allows the translator to develop. an infinity What
is daily is difficult, it is a good job and a good explanation.
Thank you for your active participation, for committing yourself and for
being aware of the contributions of other colleagues, regarding your work.
I like the clarity of the examples and concepts that you add in the graph. It
is important to use the means of translation. , how to look for the strategy

Hello Rubiela, regarding your translation, it seems to me that you should have
written "in the next decades we will see great changes" or "great changes will be

lot of coherence, instead of saying "in some major oil producing nations" you
