Project description:
- Travelling exhibition produced by the
American Museum of Natural History
- 1500 sq ft exhibition
- Retain elements of existing
exhibition on a condensed scale
- Created installation documentation
- Fabrication Budget: $100K
Project duration: 15 weeks (design), 10
weeks (fabrication and installation)
This spin-off exhibition is based on a much
larger (6200 sq ft) exhibition on the science and
technology of modern paleontology. It was
pre-sold by AMNH to a client for a two-year run
where it would visit six venues. Everything about
the exhibition had to be smaller and simplified.
The original exhibition takes three weeks to
install, this one had to be completed in four days.
The original exhibition needs to hang from the
ceiling, attach to the floor and is handled by a
team of in-house installers. This exhibition had
none of those luxuries. It needed to be plug-and-
play.
Because this exhibit would never appear in New
York, it received less scrutiny from the Exhibitions
Department and AMNH administration. I was
at the head of a small team that re-wrote,
re-designed, re-evaluated and re-populated the
exhibition with replacement objects and casts.
To scale down the exhibit, everything had to be
re-thought.
In the end we produced an exhibit that is
easier to travel than the original. It can be sold
to a wider range of venues who do not have
the necessary facilities for the other travelling
exhibitions that are produced by AMNH.

Triceratops Case
To display a this skull cast, we built a large box to surround it.
This allows the visitors to get very close to the object and fully
appreciate its scale. The tips of the horns are only 4" away for the
acrylic.
Left: In the original exhibition, the Triceratops
was hung up high and out of reach.
Right: The entire wall of the exhibition had
many skulls and specimens to compare
different display or defense traits.

Metal Apatosaurus Neck & Video Wall
To explain how an Apatosaurus neck
works, the exhibition has a model of
a neck. The model is patterned after a
computer simulation of dinosaur neck.
Behind the model is a wall of 6 LCD
monitors, showing how the bones and
muscles work.

When presented together the model, the
interactive touch screen and the video
show visitors how a dinosaur's long neck
would work.
Limitied by size, this exhibition had the
front 12' of the neck and the skull.

To show how the fossil skeleton of a
dinosaur relates to a fleshed out model,
we opposed to protoceratopians. This
small dinosaurs is of a managable size for

Small T-Rex Model
As many know, Tyrannosaurus Rex is
the largest known land carnivore. This
exhibition focuses on the biomechanics
of theropods, with T-Rex as an example.
However, such a large theropod would
never fit in such a small exhibition. To
present T-Rex, we showed a 6' model and
a full size, articulated, leg cast.

Spikes & Hardheads
This case displays many different casts of fossils. To minimize installation time, it was
designed to roll under a standard doorway on a custom built dolly. The restrictions of
the exhibit influenced how the exhibitry in many factors. From crating and trucking
to installation and display, this exhibit was convieced of as one easy to install show
that could do anywhere.
