  1. Granton on Sea: This project had its gestation a few years ago but recently has gathered some momentum. The setting for the project is an existing grade B Listed walled garden, adjacent plot of land and another plot to the north on the Edinburgh waterfront. All of these sites are in the ownership of City of Edinburgh Council.
  2. The walled garden adjoined Royston House both were part of what's now called Caroline Park House and originally situated in green fields until the late 19th century when industrialisation of the area took place, particularly the arrival of the gas works which figured largely in the neighbourhood.
  3. The house became derelict, land to the north and west of the house was quarried, and eventually the Castle fell into the quarry…… fortunately leaving the walled garden intact.
  4. The footpath you can see in the image with the boy on a bicycle still runs up from West Shore Road, bisects the site for the artisans village and forms a key part of the setting of the studios in the landscape.
  5. After the collapse of the castle the walled garden continued in use, latterly as a market garden till approximately 2006 when Mr Smith, the owner, sold it to Edinburgh Council. From that time it has been left to become terribly overgrown -albeit looking romantic- and all possible production of fruit and vegetables lost.
  6. The existing greenhouses are now beyond repair and will need to be demolished. The city obtained Planning Permission for 54 town houses, however due to several factors no developer came forward with a substantial offer for the land. At this point the community put together a bid to purchase the land at the present market value and seek to proceed with a fully funded community regeneration project.
  7. The three sites shown on this location plan are: 1) the walled garden housing the International Garden Festival 2) the artisan village with 100 studios and 3) the Lido - a heated outdoor community facility with 3 pools of differing size.
  8. The garden festival has been developed taking a similar project in France at a chateau in Chaumont Sur Loire as precedent and inspiration as they make up to 20 small garden spaces available via an annual open international garden design competition in September of each year. The winning entries have 6 months to construct, grow then open the installations to the public in April, the whole process recommences again the following September.
  9. The garden festival project will create: training, work experience, full and part time employment opportunities in the horticultural sector for the local population. It will also stimulate the local economy with tourists and visitors coming to see the 16 show gardens.
  10. The existing structures will be demolished and interpreted anew combining: exhibition, brasserie and administrative facilities. The garden will be restored with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
  11. The original concept for the artisan's village was to house the studio spaces in recycled sea containers. The site having been a quarry has been filled in so sea containers being inherently structurally stable in their own right would form a good base be easily connected together ..and simply cut-in to the 'made ground'. Some examples are shown here with green roofs and in a maritime setting.
  12. The Lido would also use salvaged sea-containers for the facilities and sunken 'open-top' containers for the pools.
  13. Studio DuB architects used the footprint of old Royston House to set-out the site plan of the village studios. The memory of the old walls and circulation of the building defining on plan the key geometric aspects forming the entrance to site, the walled garden and orientation of the studios.
  14. We propose up to 100 studio spaces constructed from pre-fabricated timber modules manufactured with local labour and resources. The lower level units will be constructed from recycled sea containers. The studios being integrated with the landscape are easily accessible to all.
  15. The upper studios cantilever over those below providing a generous covered deck for working outside in good weather. The offset in section allows access to the upper studios at the rear and for roof lights to the lower studios. Each range of studio buildings is equipped with photovoltaic panels and solar water heaters.
  16. Each studio will be given a small plot to grow their own produce in the village.
  17. Each studio is 12m long with two spaces of differing sizes which can be used for exhibition and studio space or studio share about a centrally located shower room and mini kitchen. All are double aspect with a sea view.
  18. The Lido adjoining the soon to be extended promenade provides a year round community swimming facility on an under utilised piece of Council land, with 3 polls of differing sea-container module size, all heated with well established open loop water source heat pump technology via the Forth estuary. This would be a great boon to the community and athletes who use the promenade.
  19. The three activities of the International Garden Festival, Artisans Village and Community Lido are all about empowering the local community, creating jobs, putting Granton on the City map and all the funds generated will be injected into other needy community projects.
  20. In its now way this project will help unlock the latent potential in the stalled Waterfront Edinburgh regeneration project and in so doing will provide a cultural destination absent from the current Master Plan.
