Rosemary Gladstone, the co-founder and Vice President/Chief Financial Officer of
Gladstone’s Under The Sun, a specialty food company located in Hancock, Maine, has a
background that could benefit other food producers in Maine. For twelve years,
Rosemary brought to this business a passion for the specialty food business, wild
blueberries, nutrition and healthy foods, and a desire to grow a year round food
processing facility in an area of Maine that needs economic development. She has been
very fortunate to be a part of a growing business sector in the Maine economy – specialty
food producers and processors. Having acquired specialized financial, technical, and
marketing knowledge in this area, Rosemary has the background and experience that
needs to pass along to other food businesses in Maine.
Rosemary has worked as an accountant in a wide variety of settings. She has always
taken a role in optimizing organizational structures and systems so financial information
was timely, accurate, and relevant. Positions within a hospital/healthcare corporation for
six years and an assisted living start-up for eight years gave her the opportunity to work
within large and rapidly growing business environments. Experience working in two
CPA firms gave her a broad understanding of accounting systems and tax compliance for
small to mid-size businesses. Before moving to Maine, she also found and ran two
businesses offering financial services. One offered accounting and payroll services to
small businesses in Rhode Island. In Virginia, she worked as consultant to businesses
with multi-million dollar budgets, helping clients choose and install better internal
accounting systems and creating customized spreadsheet models she designed to assist
their particular cost accounting needs. Past experiences also afforded her the opportunity
to manage and train employees while complying with human resource requirements.
All of these business management experiences combined with her first job as an
instructor of nutrition and human development in Peace Corps contributed to the vision
that grew the Maine food company she co-founded with her husband. Gladstone’s Under
The Sun became a member of the National Association of Specialty Foods in 2003 and
Rosemary took advantage of their educational programs while attending and exhibiting at
the Fancy Food shows on both the East and West coasts.
2. The courses covered many aspects of running a successful food company, including how
to get to market, achieving profitable and sustainable profit margins, and creating
products that could withstand the competitive and complicated marketplace. This
experience provided the contacts and networks to raise equity capital, which was a
requirement for their Maine Technology Development Award. This award (loan) allowed
the Company to process wild blueberries using a proprietary method developed by the
Gladstones and the University of Maine. Also, she successfully executed several business
plans which helped the company obtain SBA financing and additional loans for
equipment. And, Rosemary wrote an SBIR grant submission to the federal government in
2009, which received high grades and requests for resubmission. All of this specific
knowledge of running a food company in Maine, combined with her cost accounting
background in manufacturing environments, needs to be shared with Maine food
producers and those who want to improve and grow the food business sector in Maine.
