1. Breast Reduction Surgery- Procedure and Recovery
Breast reduction surgery is a procedure used to remove excess fat, tissue
and skin from the breasts. Many women suffer from symptoms caused by
the excess weight of their breasts. Unfortunately, non-surgical treatments
often provide little or no relief. Breast reduction surgery removes excess
breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion
with the body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large
breasts. Studies have shown that since breast reduction surgery brings
about a more proportioned figure, it will likely enhance self image and boost
self-confidence, as well as increase ability to participate in physical activities.
When to get Breast Reduction:
The medical term for large breasts is macromastia, and when large breasts
cause pain and other physical problems the condition is called symptomatic
macromastia. The symptoms of macromastia can include: chronic neck,
back, and shoulder pain, chest wall pain, headaches, poor posture, shoulder
grooving, numbness and tingling of the hands, shortness of breath, sleep
disturbances, rashes under and between the breasts, and poor exercise
tolerance. Non-surgical treatments, such as anti-inflammatory medication
(NSAIDS), only provide temporary relief for moderate symptoms.
Unfortunately, for women with more severe and persistent symptoms, such
2. treatments rarely provide relief. Breast reduction surgery is a highly
effective treatment for symptomatic macromastia because it directly
addresses the cause of the symptoms. Patient satisfaction rates after breast
reduction are very high, and it is rare to find a patient who does not
experience significant relief of her symptoms after breast reduction surgery.
The technique used to reduce the size of your breasts may vary based on the
severity of the condition, breast composition, amount of reduction desired,
your personal preferences and the surgeon’s advice. Breast reduction
surgery is generally performed through incisions on your breasts with
surgical removal of the excess fat, glandular tissue and skin. If the enlarged
breasts are the result of excess fatty tissue and excess skin is not a factor,
liposuction alone may be used in the procedure for breast reduction. In
either case, patients typically will have surgery under general anesthesia.
After breast reduction surgery, your breasts will be covered with a gauze
dressing or bandages. The results of your breast reduction surgery will be
immediately seen and felt. During the initial recovery period, your breasts
will probably feel tender and sensitive. Over time, any associated swelling
will subside and incision lines will fade. It is important to avoid excessive
force or strenuous exercise in the weeks following the procedure. Most
patients are able to resume full activities within six weeks. The final result is
generally permanent, although breast shape and size can change due to
factors such as aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors and gravity.
